THE incredible increase in house prices has often made me think of the talks on topical issues that we were given in the Army, during the War (Homes costing 15 times income, Daily Echo, October 27).
These started with an officer reading from an Army Bureau of Current Affairs information pamphlet, and then throwing the subject open for discussion.
One pamphlet explained that with enormous post-war housing projects already being planned, combined with new materials and techniques, so many cheap new houses would be built that the market would quickly become flooded and prices plummet.
This was apparently to warn us not to put part of the savings from our two shillings (10p) a day pay into existing pre-war property as we would inevitably lose our money.
