COUNCIL offices seem to be full of Dudley Dorights ever willing to spy out any contravention of some petty byelaw or directive.

Heaven forbid that a shopkeeper should return wind blown dust to its proper place in the gutter (Daily Echo, May 18).

Wouldn’t Dudley be better employed cleaning the streets and pavements with the modern equipment that is available today?

Many years ago, when, for a short time, I was an errand boy, whether it was winter or summer shopkeepers took great pride in the frontage of their shops.

In freezing conditions I scrubbed the entrance tiles where the mosaic spelt out Pearks Stores.

No customer fell on the wet step to my knowledge.

Had they done so, a chair would have been brought forward and the manager would have employed his considerable skill at pacifying customers.

Within a few minutes calmness would take over.

There were no pound signs appearing before the eyes at every fall.

Every pound had to be earned by hard work.

That definition does not include waltzing around taking videos while being paid by the council tax payer.
