IT WAS only a decade ago that the traditional paving slabs in Poole High Street and the Orchards were removed and replaced by low maintenance asphalt – reducing the risk of pedestrians tripping, and making underground pipe repair simpler.

Now a programme bearing the grand title, according to the signage, of “Environmental Enhancement” is under way.

This consists of ripping up the existing kerbs and asphalt pavement, then replacing them with tyre-bursting high kerbstones and thousands of small coloured brick blocks.

This is not enhancing when shiny new black asphalt is used to merge the additions into the old grey road, and yellow lines are painted on top.

As for the environment, my guess is that as these tiny blocks settle and become loose, many claims from fallen pedestrians will soon be landing on the borough solicitor’s desk.
