IT'S called editing, Jane. Cutting out all boring bits. Tightening it up, giving it pace.

Look, I know life could be dull back then – endless petite point punctuated by the odd dance.

But you have to slash out the tedium, Jane. Keep the balls, lose the bonnet trimming. Cinemagoers want it condensed. They want Pride ‘n’ Prejudice.

Men don’t give a frock coat about films like this. Your audience is women. And they want men in wet ruffled shirts, jodhpurs, smouldering looks, swooning. They don’t want people thinking, embroidering, sitting in a chair. Doing nothing.

That’s the problem with this film. Nothing happens. At all.

If you edit out the boring bits what are you left with? A still.
