SET on the eve of the First World War this is the story of mysterious goings-on in a small community in Germany.
It begins when the doctor falls from his horse. A wire is found strung across the road but no one is found to blame.
Then the baron’s son is attacked. Still no guilty party. The barn burns down and later the disabled son of one of the villagers is attacked. Suspicion and chaos fall on everyone.
The moral leadership of the village falls on the pastor and the questions of the early part of the plot are left hanging in the air as the news of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand filters through the community.
An intriguing film but why weren’t the subtitles bigger!
