AN OLD bearded man with slightly crazy eyes: that’s Darwin alright, but not here.
No, here the brilliant scientist is much younger and torn between his dedication to science and his God-fearing wife.
Creation carves a line between the aftermath of the death of his cherished daughter Annie and what leads to him getting the monkey off his back and finishing On the Origin of Species.
Quite aside from the superb performances (particularly from Paul Bettany as Darwin), the screenplay contains great swathes of Darwin’s scribbled thoughts found in a box by his great-great-grandson, so there’s a great sense that very little here relies on dramatic license.
