Cherries: Hughes could be out for six weeks

HAMSTRING INJURY: Richard Hughes is facing an extended spell on the sidelines HAMSTRING INJURY: Richard Hughes is facing an extended spell on the sidelines

Cherries star Richard Hughes is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after being struck down by a hamstring injury.

Hughes damaged the muscle during Cherries’ 2-0 win over Leyton Orient on Saturday and is likely to be out for between four to six weeks.

A scan revealed the midfielder had suffered a strain to his right hamstring, although the findings were not as serious as had first been feared.

Hughes limped off towards the end of the first half against Orient and there were concerns he may have sustained a tear.

The 33-year-old has been one of the few shining lights during the early part of the season and netted the only goal at Yeovil in Cherries’ first win of the campaign.

Boss Eddie Howe said: “Hopefully, it won’t be as long as we first thought but we don’t want to put too much pressure on him.”

News of Hughes’ absence was tempered somewhat by Mark Molesley’s return to full training earlier this week.

Molesley, who has been plagued by injury over the past two years, joined in with Howe’s squad both yesterday and today.

The 30-year-old lined up in Cherries’ first warm-up friendly at New Milton but has not featured for the first team this season and damaged his Achilles last month.

Molesley, who is still suffering some discomfort to the tendon, could be back in contention at the end of the month, providing he continues to make progress.

“It was great to see him back,” said Howe, who made Molesley one of his first permanent signings when he first took over as manager in January 2009.

“He has had a difficult time with injury and has got a great heart. We were really pleased to see him back.”

Midfielder Harry Arter, sidelined since suffering a rib injury against Brentford a month ago, is also back on the comeback trail.

Arter returned to full training last week before suffering a minor setback in the lead up to the visit of Orient, which ruled him against the Londoners.

Howe, who said Arter was being monitored on a daily basis, added: “We are hoping to build him up during the week. Whether or not he will be fit and available for Saturday, we don’t know yet.”

Long-term injury victims Stephen Purches and Charlie Sheringham are both continuing their respective rehabilitation programmes under the watchful eye of physio Steve Hard.

Purches, who has been out for nine months with a broken leg, started jogging on the training pitches last month, while Sheringham, sidelined since Boxing Day due to a foot injury, has been receiving intensive treatment at the FA’s new headquarters at St George’s Park.

Goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, who had surgery to repair a shoulder problem three weeks ago, is due to start his rehab later this month.

  • Cherries will entertain AFC Totton in the first round of the FA Youth Cup next month. The Stags, who play in Division One of the Hampshire Youth League, eliminated Bath City on Tuesday.

Richard Hughes has been excellent for us this season when he has played but unfortunately such injuries were always a high risk given how long he had been out of the game. Same for mark molesley's collection if niggling injuries: would love to see him back in the team

The "professional" approach - first time in eons that a full report on our injured players has been made available, doesn't look too good for Sheringham though! Am rather surprised that the Echo didn't pick up the story on the cost of going to a football match, with the Cherries, allegedly the most expensive in Division 1. Given that the cost of going to a game on a regular basis is the principal reason given by the majority of the occasional AFCB supporters , for just going to the odd game a season and picking and chosing games to go to. Perhaps the Marketing Department should be looking at ways to to encourage people to come to games. I am all for initiatives like Kids for a Quid!

SOC,
You've been highlighting for ages the poor state of the club's finances, and how the accounts will make shocking reading.

Having £6 million in debts to Mr Demin alone can we be surprised that the admission fee is the highest in the league?

Whilst not surprised, it's counter productive if you price your customers out of attending games. This is a high cost, low wage area, with many with little or no disposable income left after paying their bills. Bradford , in a similar situation, reduced significantly their admission prices, doubled the gate and improved their income from catering, programmes etc. Whilst I am sure that the return of Eddie and Jason and with that entertaining football the gates will improve - times are tough and there will be many who would love to come to games, but can't afford it, these days. I can remember, Trevor Williams, imposing swingeing price increases of 15/18% , promptly "lost" 35% of the supporters and it took two years and price reductions to get them back.

Why is Bournemouth the most expensive club to visit in league one? Considering the amount of money thats gone into the club surly they can cut the ticket prices?

I can't see how this report can be true, when I recently paid £25.00 to sit in the away end when we played Swindon. The away end at Dean Court costs £20.00 to get in........

Richard will be a loss to the team but we do have cover so not insurmountable but will be good to see him back will be interested to see if Molesly can still play at this level. As for being the dearest club then try Swindon £19 for a pensioners.

This part of the report is based on the most expensive tickets, with a pie, cup of tea and programme together. However further on in the report, when the cheapest tickets are used instead then AFCB is very similarly priced compared to other clubs.

The problem with Richard Hughes and others like him is that they have never developed their weaker foot. They incur more injuries in their careers by trying to do everything on the stronger side, sometimes looking like a contorionist!

Why didn't they sign Hughes on a pay as you play basis. Why didn't any other team sign him when he was available, perhaps he couldn't pass a medical? What a waste!
