Cherries: Pugh warns squad of ruthless Howe

SENIOR PLAYER: Marc Pugh worked under Eddie Howe during his first spell in charge SENIOR PLAYER: Marc Pugh worked under Eddie Howe during his first spell in charge

MARC Pugh has warned that new Cherries boss Eddie Howe will “take no prisoners” as he sets about the task of trying to bring back the glory days.

Fans’ favourite Pugh played a key role as Cherries marked Howe’s return to the club by registering their first home win of the season on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was the only survivor in the starting line-up from Howe’s previous reign as Cherries climbed out of the League One drop zone thanks to a 2-0 win over Leyton Orient.

Pugh, signed by Howe from Hereford in 2010, netted Cherries’ second goal and also had a hand in the first as the new boss and his assistant Jason Tindall looked on from the stands.

One of Howe’s first tasks will be to carry out a thorough assessment of the club’s infrastructure, which will include weighing up the size of the current squad.

And should he decide to reduce numbers – which Howe has already suggested he will – Pugh knows there will be no room for either sentiment or favouritism.

Pugh told the Daily Echo: “He expects and demands the best. If you aren’t performing, he will tell you. He makes training enjoyable and everybody works hard. He doesn’t tolerate below-par performances. We had a small squad when he was here before and you always needed to perform well to keep your place.

“Football is a ruthless game. Although it is a team game and you have got to perform for one another while you are on the pitch, you have also got to look after yourself and strive to be the best. When you are training and playing, you need to prove you are worth a place in the starting line-up.”

Pugh added: “It was good to know they would be coming in. I worked under them before and they are winners and brought a lot of success to the club. Hopefully, it will be a case of onwards and upwards for us now they are back. The club has done really well to get them back.”

Despite the return of Howe, Pugh said he was still in “no rush” to commit himself to a fresh contract with Cherries after rejecting the club’s offer of a new deal in the summer.

Pugh, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has always made no secret of his desire to showcase his talents in the Championship.

He added: “I want to play in the Championship and, if the club is going to bring success, you never know what might happen. But I just want to concentrate on my football and am in no rush to do anything at the moment.”

Pugh now sign a contract and stay with us even if it is only to prove my dear friend SMHINTO the master predictor who for sometime has been saying that you are on your way.

By the way your goal was a great one to see on Saturday!! UTC

I listened to Eddie on Solent this morning, making it very clear that the Squad is far too large for his liking and intends cutting it as a priority, he will look at each player to see whether they fit into a Team and add balance. I would expect this process to take ttime, but expect to see a much tighter and united Squad in 5/6 weeks time, with 10/12 moving on in January. He is also looking at the structure of the Club and those running it. Not that he needs any, but my advice would not let Brookes and Groves back in. Brookes is trouble - and having a direct line to his Father-in-law doesn't help either.

How(e) the AFCB world has changed in one week
Returning from holiday I now learn that Eddie and Jason are back and all is well in Cherryland - and to cap it all a WIN - all good and a promising future - fantastic

However, let us not forget the massive job that Eddie has got unravelling and re building a chaotic situation created by his inexperienced/incapa
ble predecessors and current Chairman

During his absence the 'Mitchell way forward' has included - dismantling an established youth system and releasing a most loyal and successful youth coach, abandoned a scouting system in favour of non football people watching dvd's and talking to agents, abandoned a reserve team thus not providing an opportunity for players to play competitive football, spent money as if it is going out of fashion on mediocre players and now paying ridiculous salaries for many to drift around the club in the off chance they may get a game, invested heavily in the facilities at the club (great) but without tendering the building contracts to ensure best value for money

Eddie will have to address most of these issues and I am sure he is the right man to do so. However he can only achieve success if he is allowed to manage properly without interference and I hope that Denim will ensure this happens

'The Mitchell Way' has cost us an outrageous amount of money to be currently fighting a relegation battle

I sincerely hope that the additiona £1.4 MILLION compensation and £750 THOUSAND managers contract is spent on a management team who are ALLOWED TO MANAGE and rebuild what has been dismantled by inxperienced people with inflated ego's and feeling of self importance

Good luck to Eddie and Jason you have a massive task ahead of you

We need cover agreed but a squad of around 40 players is not realistically manageable- how do you effectively organise training for a start and as I have said previously what are these people doing if they cannot play any competitive football

Assessing, then cutting back the squad and addressing the sslary bill would be the first task of any competent manager

A football squad is like a set of golf clubs.

You can only have a set number in your bag at any one time, like players the golf clubs all have a role and different jobs but all together they bring balance and structure to your game.

There are more types of clubs for different conditions or courses so it's good to have a selection in reserve that you are going to use and some for back up if some get broken or bent.

You don't have half a dozen drivers, putters or wedges all the same or of inferior quality because they will only gather dust and not be used.

We have brought together a collection of players but have given precious little thought to each players usefulness or where they fit in to the team jigsaw puzzle.

Whilst Edmund has shown allegiance to Shaun Brooks right from his involvement with Dorchester Town, I agree that as new guys have been brought in to run the development and academy set up it would be wrong for Groves and Brooks to be added to an already bloated backroom set up.

An interesting list, which demonstrates just what a bloated squad we have, nor would I disagree with you in your choice of players. Eddie and Jason , will however give them all a chance to prove their worth before reaching a decision. The art of team building is to produce a team that is better than it's parts and some of his choices may surprise us. We may well have some patchy results over the next 5/6 weeks as they get to know their players. But I anticate that there will be a clear out with 12/16 players leaving , with 2/3 players added, in January, as they build their squad. The New Year will prove interesting

I just hope now the dust has settled that everyone keeps their feet on the ground. EH has a huge task. Their will be no instant miracles. I for one will be quite happy to avoid relegation this season.
.
He inherits a squad that has been thrown together will no thought or planning. It will take EH until the summer to work his way through it properly. Even then his hands are tied with players on long contracts, unless he can find willing buyers.
.
Next season will be a building and consolidating season, hopefully putting things in place for a promotion push the year after that.
.
So please give him time and support. He is as we all know a great manager, but he has a huge task to correct the mismanagement of the last 8 months. Groves made Bradbury look like a good manager.
.
As for Marc Pugh, I despair when I continually read that he wants championship football. He will only get it with AFCB. I am a big Pugh fan, but he is a lower league player, albeit a good one. How many championship clubs have enquired about him ? None. Even EH when at Burnley didn't come in for him. He needs to get real. If he runs his contract down, he will walk to another league 1 club. If he won't sign, he should be listed with a view to offloading in January while we can still get some cash for him.

CherryChimes says...

I hope to see more home support on Saturday. The crowd was smaller than I thought it would be for the Orient game. I am just pleased that the supporters really got behind the team in the second half. Do you think we can chant 'Barmy Army' for the full 90 minutes? We can make DC a fortress again if we give Eddie, Jason and the team our full vocal support.

Your cull list reflects ignorance. Jalal was in goal when our skin was saved to beat relegation to Conference, he was in goal when we got promotion, he was in goal when we got to play-offs and he was in goal through the pain when the club refused him an operation in the summer break.

Lionheart when I played golf it wasn't the clubs that produced a bad shot 99% of the time was down to me the manager of those clubs!!!!

Seriously I do take your point.

I have a feeling that there are happy days ahead of us even thogh EH has to settle down again and find the right 'CLUBS'

Maybe we should refer to players as i.e. the forwards would be putters as they ultimately put the ball in the net (cup) the midfielders as short irons like a wedge ok the men in white jackets are knocking at the door I must go!!!

I agree ,mcqoid hasn't proved himself since he's been back . And PARTINGTON will be a good 2nd division player . But he just isn't good enough for this division ..as for McDermott I think we might see a change in him under HOWE ..
Oh and I think Hughes even tho he is a good player will always be injured ..
I think McDermott would be decent if he stays out the pub!!

Just been watching the report about EH`s return and the match on South Today and two things stood out about MP`s goal that I hadn`t noticed before...first when their defender received the ball two of our players closed him down immediately, this was something that was one of the foundations of how the team played under EH,something that has been missing from our game since he left and but was in evidence a lot in the second half.Secondly when MP eventually decided to put the ball in the net,as he turned away to celebrate, the covering defender took a wild kick at him with his left foot, could be a possible case of serious foulplay.

You're absolutely right on both counts. Saturday is probably too soon to see a true EH team display but the future is looking the best it's been for a long time.

You seem to be oblivious to what is happening in the club. Bringing in Pitman, Bartley and Barnard is going to be costly. Your keep list is laughable: Fletch! Your cull list reflects ignorance. Jalal was in goal when our skin was saved to beat relegation to Conference, he was in goal when we got promotion, he was in goal when we got to play-offs and he was in goal through the pain when the club refused him an operation in the summer break. EH is back. Let him do his job and be more realistic in your posts.
you taken your pills today ? Fletch in Okane out !!!!!!!!!!

Start tubbs and Barnard, Play with width ( pugh and Grabbon ) hughes and the playmaker Okane ) best 2 fullbacks in the division Daniels and Francis with cook and zubar in front of Jajal.

Subs : Mcdonald, Mcquoid, Thomas, Davids, James, Arter, & when fit Purches, Mcdermott, Sherringham

Partington, Elphick, Addison, Molesely, Fletcher, Stockley, Flahavan, Gregory, ALL OUT !

Playoffs a must with the squad and costs we have.

Good luck king EDDIE.
O'Kane playmaker, PMSL he gives the ball away more than anyone. So lightweight it's a joke. Arter in that position is much better.

It's all very well having a development squad but it should be used to develop players for the first team not to perpetuate mediocrity.

Eddie and Jason are decent guys and good judges of the types of players that they will need in their team so whilst everyone will get a chance to show what they can do those deemed surplus will be offloaded/loaned out with a major clearout in the January transfer window.

Whilst Edmund has shown allegiance to Shaun Brooks right from his involvement with Dorchester Town, I agree that as new guys have been brought in to run the development and academy set up it would be wrong for Groves and Brooks to be added to an already bloated backroom set up.

I hope Edmund now stays up in his sponsors box and out of the dressing room and finds Tom a job outside of Dean Court.

The analogy is complete if you visualise that the golfer is the manager and the caddie the assistant manager.
