Cherries: Mitchell would welcome Harry on to Dean Court board

SPURS DEPARTURE: Harry Redknapp talks to the media outside his Sandbanks home yesterday SPURS DEPARTURE: Harry Redknapp talks to the media outside his Sandbanks home yesterday

Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell has ruled out the possibility of Harry Redknapp returning to Dean Court either as boss or co-owner.

But he says he would welcome Redknapp on to the board as his wealth of knowledge would benefit management duo Paul Groves and Shaun Brooks and director of football Tom Mitchell.

Eddie Mitchell, who owns the club with Russian businessman Maxim Demin, was speaking in the aftermath of Redknapp’s sacking as manager of Premier League Tottenham on Wednesday.

Dorset-based Redknapp cut his teeth in management at Dean Court between 1983 and 1992 – leading Cherries to the second flight for the only time in their history in 1987.

Eddie Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “First and foremost, I think Harry would be more valuable to the bigger clubs and I’m sure they will be looking to gain his services.

“But if it ever came to the time when perhaps travelling and other things weren’t on the agenda for him, we would always welcome him back with open arms.

“I have run it by my partner and we would see no problem with Harry dropping in from time to time and doing something which he would enjoy. He knows Paul and Shaun and knows they are more than capable of taking this club forward. I know Harry’s nature and he wouldn’t jeopardise coming in and taking somebody else’s job.

“Managerial-wise, it is not an option and I don’t think Harry would do that anywhere. But if he ever wanted to come by and talk football, give advice and perhaps join the board, his experience would be invaluable.”

Asked by the Daily Echo whether the prospect of ownership or the position of director of football could be open to Redknapp, Eddie Mitchell replied: “Tom is director of football. He is very inexperienced compared with Harry but, nevertheless, he is a compatible person and very much like Harry. I am sure Tom could learn a fantastic amount from somebody like Harry so it wouldn’t be a case of coming in with a defined role.

“If you had the freedom to come in to talk to Paul, Shaun and Tom and to sit down with myself and Max, we would perhaps assess a value to that and maybe sort something out with Harry. It is not an unrealistic possibility.

“I don’t think we would want Harry to get financially involved with the club and I don’t think he would want that either. I think probably his future is on the television because he comes across well, he has a wealth of knowledge and that’s where I think he would get most fun.

“We are just up the road from where Harry lives and want to go places as a club. I am sure Harry would be able to help us.”

I hope Harry does come back as it's clear to everyone our club desperately needs someone on the board who has a clue. Very little chance of that happening though.

I keep hoping to read news from DC that excites me, shows me the amibition that we keep hearing about and NO, not more Mitchell building projects. Something that has me desoerately wanting the season to start and what do we get, TM Director of Football, Jeeeezzzz even the weather seems better than that!!! IF Harry was ever to get involved, if his position was not one that could make a REAL difference, then I'd say stay away "H", because I could not see you wanting to be involved with this bunch of clowns... Can't argue with any parent looking after their son but in this case NOT at the expense of a great many people (the supporters) who rely on the best possible stewardship of their club. How can a 21 year old lad provide that ?! It's an insult to the supporters, many of whom were following this great little club before Young Mr T. Mitchell was born. IF I owned the club, I'd certainly have family involved in some way, but on the footballing side??? Absolutely NOT!! especially a 21yr old still wet behind the ears with no real footballing experience. How on earth can you compare HIM with someone who has spent many years in the game with bundles of experience. Plain ridiculous, making us look a laughing stock more than we were anyway.

What a stupid remark.

I certainly wouldn't be taking on a role as 'Director of Football', even if I was related to a club owner. How on earth is a 21 year old builders son qualified to scout players and provide technical advice to qualifed football coaches? That includes ones as 'average' as Messrs Groves and Brooks.

Mind you, it could be a holding role until the Hotel is built and he could then swap to concierge perhaps?

The problem is that many are doing just that, I have no idea whether the 40% drop in Season Ticket sales alleged is true or not, though I do know many who are holding back until they can see what sort of team we will have and I am amongst them. But, Mitchell does invite so much invective, through ill judged comments, the many broken promises and untruths . He should allow the PR man the Club employs to make all the statements or at least have some imput in them. We happen to CARE about what happens at our club, just because it may not fit in with how you see things we're entitled to our opinion, an opinion that the majority feel, we're not isolated by a long way. oh dear Pete you do take things personally, my comments were based on the majority of postings not at yourself alone, I did say I did not agree with everything that Mr Mitchell says and does but after 65 years of supporting the club and with the succession of bad chairmen we have had, as a chairman he is no better or worse than many who have gone for him, I feel it would be fairer to wait and see what sort of a squad is assembled make your desicion on whether you are then satisfied with what you see, rather than producing negative post on every subject but the football

In order your your comments to have any credibility you could perhaps back them up with just one piece of prove that EM has done anything 'perfectly'. What Eddie Mitchell has done (which is far from perfect) is sell a whole team in order to stay in business, loan money from his own pocket, get loans from Demin to support the massive wage bills/work on ground all of which has to be paid back, threaten supporters, abuses national radio listeners and like you, tell loyal supporters to go and support another team. I'm still trying to think of something perfect he has done. Over to you for that one!!!
