Cherries: Honours even in Victoria Park stalemate

Cherries missed out on the chance to force their way in the play-off places after they were held to a 0-0 draw by League One rivals Hartlepool today.

An uninspiring contest, played in freezing conditions on Teesside, produced little in the way of goalmouth action with a share of the spoils a fair outcome.

Cherries went close to scoring when Steve Cook’s first-half header was cleared off the line, while Peter Sweeney wasted a good opening for the hosts late on.

Scott Malone, the hero of Cherries’ 2-0 win over Exeter, was restored to the starting line-up following his midweek exploits against the Grecians as boss Bradbury made one change.

Malone replaced new signing Donal McDermott, the Dubliner dropping down to the bench, as Bradbury selected from the same 16-man squad.

Cherries carved out the clearest goalscoring opportunity of the opening period when Cook’s header from Malone’s 42nd-minute corner was hacked off the line by Evan Horwood.

Chances were at a premium during the first half with teenage striker Luke James seeing his glancing header well saved by Darryl Flahavan in the 17th minute.

Apart from the two headed opportunities, neither goal came under too much threat as defences dominated during a largely uneventful first 45 minutes.

Wes Thomas squandered a presentable chance seven minutes before the break when he scooped a left-foot shot over the crossbar following a Marc Pugh assist.

James flicked a cross from Horwood past the post at the start of the second half before Thomas fired wide after seizing on a loose ball on the edge of the box.

Thomas drew a fine save from Scott Flinders after 65 minutes, the Pools goalkeeper diving full length to his right to push the striker’s low drive around the upright.

Cook threw himself in front of James Brown’s shot to divert the effort for a corner before Matt Tubbs’s looping shot was gathered by Flinders.

Cherries had an escape when Sweeney created space for a shot, the midfielder wastefully blazing over the crossbar nine minutes from time.

McDermott, on as a 63rd-minute substitute for Malone, then went close to breaking the deadlock when his low left-foot drive flashed past the post.

Pools defender Peter Hartley rose to meet a Horwood free kick, only to head straight into the grateful arms of Flahavan.

Cherries (4-4-2): Flahavan, Francis, Zubar, Cook, Daniels, Pugh, Gregory, MacDonald (Arter, 63), Malone (McDermott, 63), Tubbs, W Thomas (Fletcher, 82).

Unused subs: Purches, D Thomas (g/k).

Pools (4-4-2): Flinders, Austin, Hartley, Collins, Horwood, Brown, James (Nish, 70).

Unused subs: Humphreys, Haslam, Baldwin, Rafferty (g/k).

Booked: Brown, Austin, James, Liddle.

Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire).

Attendance: 4,548 (inc 125 away supporters).

Well I guess one point is better than none, but let's be honest, if we're going to mount a serious challenge on the top six these are the games you have to win and win well to build up momentum and confidence.
Good to hear our fans making some noise so well done to the @125 hardy souls who braved the conditions to get there! I wonder how many flew up there like the team did?
Next up Leyton Orient at home and Rochdale away. It has to be six points from these two games because the next six games after that are going to be very very tough!

A good point in the circumstances. 'Pool have picked up form at home since Neal Cooper's arrival.

At least Carlisle and Stevenage now have more mid week games to add to those already scheduled. We can still make the play offs.

And no one likes a racist, cheat and habitual diver either. Evra is no saint either....wasn't he behind the French teams fall out at the world cup?
Anyway....back from overpaid prima donnas to real football.....well done today for the gritty point and the amazing away support. I think that the fixture pile up for teams who have missed today and last weekend will cause them some problems later on with extra midweek games and injuries. I also think we will do well against the sides above us as we have a team as good as anyone else in this division.

Draw a fair result. Pool looked a decent side so a respectable result in my book. Glimpses of link up play between T&T but not a day when forwards shone to be honest. Possibly went wide too often when a ball down the channels would sometimes have been the more threatening one to play. But if u can't win at least make sure 8 don't lose, especially if our recent home form continues on Tuesday

Not a hugely disappointing result. Good to get a point away from home in testing conditions.

We really need to pile on the pressure from the word go on Tuesday and stick something past Orient and start building some momentum for the run in.

For once, we have more than enough quality players to fill our team ... I mean Arter is still on the bench !!! Although the influx of new talent did come halfway through the season, theres still ample to time to cement ourselves in the play offs.

We just need the numbers down at DC giving the team the support deserves.

A tough game by the sound of it, still its another point which could make a huge difference to achieving the playoffs. Hope there is a good turnout on Tuesday.

Well done AFCB a good point and very well done to those that made the trip. Good effort !

Not well done Suarez, letting everyone down again. LFC and Dalgleish have backed their man unequivocally but are being made to look daft everytime he appears. Sell, sell, sell !!

Given the array of attacking talent we now have, just three shots on target and four corners isn't good enough. True the conditions were dire and played there part in yet another scrappy game. A point was fair to both sides. But doubt whether the play off's are achievable this Season. For me the doubts remain - can Lee produce an attacking, free flowing side - capable of opening dour defensive teams up? On another note, you do have to hand it to Harry - brings in Sahar ( whose had a dreadful Season at Everton) he proved to be a "missing piece of the jig saw" and they play Newcastle "off the Park" - but that's what the very best Managers do!! Dean Court certainly seems to be a School for Managers!

with probably one of the best squads we have ever had we need to settle into games much quicker than we do, too many times we do not appear to settle until the 2nd half, good sides are better than this and there is no reason why we continually struggle to get going unless it is the tactics employed my the manager, if so please Lee this is a problem that needs to be sorted

So you don't think that the premiership players are overpaid prima donnas then? Well good for you....football is about opinions....and just because you are the only person in this country with your particular opinion don't let it bother you.
When/if the cherries reach the premiership i will reassess my opinion but at the moment, they are in league 1 and that is my opinion at the present time.....OK?

No it's not 'okay' people like Wayne Rooney are worth every penny of their £200k plus wages every week, think about it, the amount of money these players earn their clubs in revenue from competitions such as th CL and the PL etc they ate more than worth is! The winners of the PL receive about £25mill so u tell me it's not worth paying these people the amount we do!? Then cancel your sky package and stop giving these clubs the funds to do so. Idiot.

I will be supporting England but it is such a shame that we are represented by such a motley crew of prima donnas. It is noticable that as the salaries of the England players have gone up in recent years the performances have worsened. When was the last time we had a decent competition.....it was when Gazza was still playing.
We have a real lack of world class players getting paid a kings ransom and John Terry is just a disgrace.
