Football: Pulis insists Redknapp is the "only choice"

HARRY FAN: Stoke boss and former Cherries star Tony Pulis HARRY FAN: Stoke boss and former Cherries star Tony Pulis

FORMER Cherries star Tony Pulis has overwhelmingly backed calls for Harry Redknapp to be made England manager – insisting his old boss is the “only choice”.

Pulis, now in charge at Premier League outfit Stoke City, played under Redknapp at Dean Court in the late eighties and was part of the 1987 Division Three title-winning squad led by the likeable Londoner.

In an exclusive interview with the Echo, Pulis insisted Sandbanks-based Redknapp had “earned the right” to manage his country and urged the FA to act quickly and approach the 64-year-old.

Pulis said: “The FA are obviously looking for an English manager and I don’t think there is an English manager around who can touch Harry.

“He is at the right age to take it on and has proved he can work with top players and get the best out of them. Most importantly, he knows how to win.

“He has earned the right to manage his country, but Harry is the only one who can decide if he wants it.

“Personally, I think he is nailed on and he is the only choice.

“He is the choice of the people on the street, but also of people in football.

“He has worked hard and climbed up from the lower leagues as a manager to where he is today and he deserves the chance to manage his country.

“It would make him the proudest man in the world.”

Pulis made 72 appearances during a three-year spell in Dorset after being signed by Redknapp from Newport County in 1986.

The Welshman was named Cherries boss in 1992 after Redknapp left Dean Court for West Ham.

Pulis added: “When I first came to Bournemouth, I thought Harry was an excellent coach. He has come away from that side a bit now, but he said and did things that have always stayed with me.

“Harry has the wit and the personality and he romances people because of the way he is.

“You need that as a manager today because you are dealing with superstars who are paid an absolute fortune.

“You also need to have discipline and nobody should ever think that Harry doesn’t have that in his locker.

“I think the FA wants Harry and it will be down to him and whether he feels he needs to finish what he has started at Tottenham or whether he feels he has done his bit and can take the England job.”

It would be good for England to have Harry at the helm ... But if I was being honest, I was hoping after the spurs job . Harry was coming back to us ... Like a knight in shining armour ride in slay that dragon MITCHELL .. And take over ..

Why would you want to slay the club's saviour? Harry's a no brainer for the England job. Where ever he's been he has turned fortunes around, if he can achieve any thing near that for England it would be incredible. This is the ultimate test for Harry.

I can't see Harry leaving Spurs during the Season - he will want to finish the Season with them and to repay the Club and it's supporters loyalty to him. Nor does he brook interference and will want to have people he knows, respects and trusts around him. So whilst I believe that he is by far the best man for the job and a patriotic Englishman - it's not a done deal!

It doesn't matter how good Harry is or not, the main under-performing players will still be the same and they are the problem. Too many big egos involved. Look at how many of them are already spouting on twitter who they'd like to see as England Manager, overpaid prima donnas the lot of them.

Totally agree I know Harry would love the England job but he will only be as good as the England players which need a massive boot up them, having said that if anyone can Harry can!

Its a no brainer but I don't think he will start the job until the season ends on 13 May.

I just don't buy into the theory that England must have an English coach. What the job needs is the best man for the job. If the best Englishman for the job is, let's say, ranked as the 45th best coach (judged by achievement) available in world football, but the man who is top of the same rankings but happens to be Portuguese or Spanish, I know damned well who I would want in charge, and it wouldn't be the twitchy one. That's not to say I don't like 'Arry, I do, but his CV is not exactly world-class. One FA Cup and a couple of lower-league titles and promotions, combined with a trail of financial devastation. He talks a good game though!

Harry has had plent of opportunity to ride to AFCBs rescue in the past years and although proclaiming that he would never allow this club to die has failed to live up to his promise, there is no doubt that should he take the England job is team would be entertaining even thouth it would extend the playing careers Lampard Terry and Ferdinand until their past 50

I really can't see Harry leaving Spurs before the end of the Season - he respects the support that both Club and fans have given him and will want to repay their loyalty. Then too, he has never brooked interference in his teams and his choice of those he wants around him - people he both trusts and respects and can work with. Whilst I firmly believe that he is the right man for the job - it's not a "done deal".

I think it highly likely that Harry will be installed as England manager very soon. The groundswell of opinion is vastly in his favour, with even Sir Alex saying he should get the job!
Whether or not he could manage England on a part time basis remains to be seen, but in the end money will talk. The England job would probably pay at least double what Harry is making at Spurs!

And who do you think is good mates with Mitchell and had a chat with him about getting involved with AFCB?This was at the same time when we were in administration and he was asked about the prospect of Bournemouth folding and said he would never allow that to happen.Harry was indulged by various chairmen when he was with us.He found some absolute diamonds like Ian Bishop, the best player ever to pull on an AFCB shirt in my opinion, and also persuaded some experianced pro's,like Luther Blisset,to join,(unfortunately on wages far beyond the clubs means that helped generate years of financial strife that were only relieved when we had a team full of assets to sell).
Harry can't do enough for the Poole and Bournemouth community.Back in 1990,before his accident at the World Cup,i had a mate who was left paralysed after an accident abroad. We took up various fund raising initiatives to try to raise money for an air ambulance to bring him home and approached AFCB about a charity game,an AFCB side to play a side made up of players from the Sunday League,to be played at Poppies ground. Not only was Harry more than happy to do this,he put out a side with a few big names in,on a frozen pitch in the middle of Winter and sat up in the stands having a craic and banter with the big crowd that had come along. He was also at my nephews school fete back in the Autumn, signing autographs and having photos taken with the excited kids,(my nephew certainly was!).A busy man with all the time in the world for this community and a man who can get the best out of underacheiving teams and motiviting good players who could become world beaters.
He could see this season out with Spurs,(be a bit unfair to disrupt them at the moment),and then take over at the end of the season,(maybe even on a part time basis.Does the England manager in this day and age need to be full time if he has the staff to watch games and report back on players for him?).

Would you want to work for an outfit like the FA who have just totally undermined the manager's authority leaving him with no choice but to resign ?
.
Why would Harry want the job anyway ? After a brief honeymoon period he would be lambasted by the press just like all his predecessors.
.
In any case I think he has too much baggage for the FA. My guess is they will revert to type and look for a quiet life. Roy Hodgson is a safe pair of hands.

Fabio Capello's record as a club manager is fantastic, not just Italy, but Real Madrid. Is anyone actually sorry he's gone? Will we miss him, or was the world cup a disaster? So your argument about having the best record as a coach is actually a load of old tosh. Capello has proved that. Someone with the will for his country's team to win is what we need - had anyone heard of Joachim Low of Germany before he took over, he did pretty well. Didn't Gary Speed do a good job with Wales after 6 months with Sheff Utd? And what has finances got to do with the England job, the manager can't sign anyone, he doesn't spend money!! And that's unfair on Harry, cos Tottenham aren't exactly on the breadline are they?? And the last English manager to take a team into the Champions League was Bobby Robson I believe (Newcastle), years ago, about 2004? Easy to ignore facts that don't fit your agenda.

Garbage, Harry isn't sentimental about players, look where Defoe has been most of the season, on the bench! He loves youth and pace, from giving Matty Holmes his debut at 18, to playing Jake Livermore in some massive games for Spurs this season.
