Cherries: Goulding sees red in Grimsby defeat

SUBSTITUTE Jeff Goulding was sent off without having touched the ball during Cherries’ incident-packed 3-2 defeat by struggling Grimsby at Blundell Park.

The 25-year-old striker, on as a 70th-minute replacement for Brett Pitman, received a straight red card following a clash with Mariners’ on-loan defender Jude Stirling.

Goulding had been on the pitch for barely 60 seconds before he was dismissed by referee Rob Shoebridge for allegedly elbowing Stirling. And unless the club decides to appeal, he will receive an automatic three-match ban, which would kick in immediately.

Earlier, Cherries had twice come from behind to level with Lee Bradbury’s header three minutes before half-time cancelling out Jamie Devitt 27th-minute opener for the Mariners.

And after Michael Coulson had restored the hosts’ lead 15 minutes into the second half, former Cherries goalkeeper Nick Colgan allowed Liam Feeney’s grass-cutter to squirm under him to make it 2-2.

However, there was a nasty sting in the tail for Cherries as Leicester City loan man Ashley Chambers came off the bench to grab a dramatic injury-time winner for the relegation-threatened Mariners.

Boss Eddie Howe named an unchanged starting line-up following Cherries’ 2-2 draw at Notts County on Monday, while Grimsby handed a debut to loan signing Stirling, who arrived in Cleethorpes on the morning of the match.

Cherries were forced to defend in numbers during the early stages as the Mariners enjoyed the lion’s share of possession with a series of mule-like throws from Stirling keeping the visitors on their toes.

Although Grimsby saw plenty of the ball, Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal remained relatively untroubled as his defence stood firm, while Steve Fletcher’s tame diving header was comfortably gathered by Colgan.

However, the hosts took the lead in the 27th minute when Devitt rolled the loose ball into an unguarded net after Jalal had only been able to palm Jean Louis Akpa Akpro’s initial effort into his path.

Jalal denied the Mariners a second when he saved smartly at his near post after defender Rob Atkinson had met Stirling’s driven cross before Cherries began to gain a foothold as the first half wore on.

And a succession of probing corners finally paid dividends for Howe’s men when an unmarked Bradbury nodded home Pitman’s delivery three minutes before the break.

Josh McQuoid replaced Alan Connell for the start of the second half before Ryan Garry’s excellent sliding tackle on Akpa Akpro denied the Mariners striker a shooting chance.

Cherries then escaped a loud and confident penalty appeal for a handball against Hollands, although referee Shoebridge and his assistant were unmoved.

A swift counter-attack failed to reap rewards for Cherries, with Pitman’s shot blocked, before Peter Bore’s low cross flashed across the face of the visitors’ goalmouth with neither Akpa Akpro nor Lee Peacock able to convert.

Grimsby regained the initiative on the hour when Coulson glanced home Peter Sweeney’s inswinging corner, although the lead was short lived as Cherries went straight down the other end to level.

There appeared to be no danger as Feeney’s tame effort from the edge of the box rolled towards Colgan’s hands. However, to the goalkeeper’s dismay, he somehow allowed it to squirm through his grasp and into the back of the net.

Cherries were rocked when substitute Goulding received his marching orders less than a minute after coming off the bench, the striker red carded by referee Shoebridge for allegedly elbowing Stirling. Colgan partly atoned for his earlier error when he saved well from Feeney’s snapshot, although Chambers had the final say when he netted the loose ball following a frantic goalmouth scramble in added time.

A disappointing result but Grimsby will take points off other sides on the run in on recent form; - other results not wonderful forus, but at least Burton equalised against Chesterfield. Effects of other sides' loan players showing at this stage how well Cherries have done to stay in the hunt without being able to strengthen an injury-hit side. Only one solution - pay off the debt!!!

Not a good game or result for Cherries. They were up against a team desperate for points to stay in the League and Grimsby took advantage.
Unlucky for Cherries with Grimsby's last minute goal.
Hopefully the team will learn and come back fighting next week.

Very poor performance by all accounts. Ironic that as players come back from injury the overall performance goes downhill. Haven't seen the Goulding red card offence yet! I still think we will end up in the playoffs. Considering the rubbish EH and the team have had to cope with that is a great achievement.

Come on lads keep fighting, we can get promoted this season.

If indeed Jeff did elbow the Grimsby player he should be fined a month's wages and apologise to all the fans who made that trip today. It maybe o.k for a Notts County player to behave like that but not at this club thanks, may be Lee Hughes touched him when Jeff had to give him the man of the match award! Very poor performance all round with the exception of Gary, Bartley and Jalal. STEP IT UP OR YOU WILL F**K IT UP!!

No great surprise in that result, with Grimsby in the relegation zone and desperate for points, as was shewn when beating Shrewsbury in their last game. Eddie expected a hard game and suggested there is not a great difference in ability in this league between top and bottom, so he knows we are sure to have some disappointments in the run in.
Just have to accept that in the right spirit, and look forward to the next game.

Very disappointing result but as many have already said Grimsby are fighting for survival so it is no wonder about the result. Hindsight is a wonderful thing so I guess EH may regret substituting Pitman. Never mind there are still a lot of points to be won so all is not lost. Up the cherries

No surprises here we always do well against the good clubs and not so well against lower end of the league bad weather conditions always evens the teams out.we arn't going to win them all, but maybe we should have got something from this one.
Accrington will be not pushover next week either. so lets up our game next week and put this behind us.
P.S I seem to remember Brett getting sent off nearly as quick at Blythe does that make him a muppet also ??? I for one trust Eddie's management skills and he must have had a plan with the subs

"Grimsby are fighting for survival so it is no wonder about the result"

In other words, Grimsby tried harder to win because they had more reasons to do so. I thought the Cherries, about to be made bankrupt, would have had more reasons to win. Apparently not.

Symes got sent off for Accrington Stanley so he won't be in contention next Saturday.
Cherries lost, no great deal. As someone said, we aren't going to win them all.
Onwards and upwards, looking for a good game at DC next Saturday.
Notts County jumped us on goal average and they still have three games in hand. Can't let anyone else get above us if we want the automatic promotion places.

Just back from match. We didn't play great but showed enough battling qualities to warrant a point. The referee had a shocker, as did one of his assistants. I think the sending off was harsh, the Grimsby defender was all over Goulding and he seemed to be mainly trying to get himself free. He may have raised his arm a bit but it was handbags at dawn at worst. In my opinion the foul by Peacock that he was booked for was much worse and certainly more dangerous. And how Akpo didn't get booked for a blatant dive in the area I don't know. Got two home games coming up now - win them and the table will look a lot better.

Hey fantastic game today boys, end to end stuff and both teams were comitted and wanted to win.
I thought we just about deserved it overall, although the sending off was maybe harsh and swung the game in our favour. Your sub definately flung his elbow but im not sure how much contact was made from where i was sitting.
On the other hand the ref didnt give us, what we all thought was a blatant penalty for handball, so maybe , under the pressure of the home crowd he was tring to even things up. Anyway thanks for a cracking game.
Good luck in your quest for promotion, and i hope its not long before we play you again, bournemouth is always a good weekend away.

well said afcblee how anyone can question EH's team management when he's kept us in the top 3 all season is crazy. I wasn't at the game today but it must have been a soft send off as willo thought the Grimsby player was being sent off to begin with.

Must do better in the remaining 9 games. They all must be treated like cup finals now. Two home wins and we will have forgotten about this game.

Can someone explain to me how Jude Stirling can be signed up as an emergency loanee for todays game yet Grimsby have six outfield players on the bench.

Just back from the game and I thought a draw would have been a fair result. I must admit that the Goulding sending off looked harsh from where I was sat and I was surprised to see Pitman subbed in the first place. I think some of the comments are a bit harsh on Goulding and maybe you should reserve judgement until you've seen it. I don't understand why their second goal was given when the guy seemed to punch the ball into the goal. However, Grimsby maybe should have had a penalty. It was a typical game at this stage of the season when teams at the bottom seem to make up for their lack of flair by having more passion than those at the top. Onwards and upwards for next week.

It makes a refreshing change to listen to a fair & open minded manager like Eddie Howe. A complete contrast to Arsie Whinger of Arsenal. Jeff deserved to go and team were poor apart from Jalal & central defensive pair. Lets take a reality check. This team is still in a fantastic position and have done really well this season. One final push should see us there but if it is via the play-offs so be it. I would have grabbed that with both hands at the start of the season.

The second Grimsby goal was punched into the net - all the players and fans were incensed by it as it happened right in front of the away end.

Didn't see the sending off incident very well, but it looked like Jeff was running into their half and the huge centre half was all over him before he reacted. Fletch was manhandled all afternoon and didn't get a single freekick that I can remember.

Akpro-Akpo's disgraceful dive deserved a yellow, but both referee and linesman decided to ignore it. Consistency would be good. He obviously got the 'cheat' chant and then decided to make hand gestures to the away fans. I'm not his biggest fan, it's fair to say!

Poor performance, but the points were there to be had with a little luck and some fair refereeing. On to next week we go!

Whilst taking nothing away from the efforts of the team and management how we remain in the top 3 is inexplicable. Living out of the country I can only listen to ther internet commentaries and the views of the rose tinted Willo. I saw the NC match on TV, we were dreadful and if this is the performance we put in week in week out our league position is remarkable My prediction is that we will not even be in the play offs, if we get there it will only be due to early season form and we will lose in the SFs.

And by the way all of those saying EM should stump up funds - why? He is trying to run the club as a business, he is no Abramovich and why should he put more of his money at risk. The club belongs to the fans and if there are not enough fan putting their bums on seats and buying merchandise to financially support the club it will die!

there is no doubt the players have done well this season but have always lacked consistancy and to keep telling us in Echo articles they will put it right but are unable to do so, Eddie Howe and his management team have done well to keep them focussed upto this point, but if we manage to finish in the playoff positions then we should be pleased to get there under the difficult circumstances we have had to operate, it is only a pity in a season that has promised so much on the field should once again be dominated by events off the field, whilst I appreciate how difficult it is I cannot help but feel that all the efforts on the field have been let down very badly by the board, so I take over a football club with no money to invest and my business plan is to live one day at a time by robbing Peter to play Paul, I will gain interest by telling the fans that soon the embargo will be lifted but all the time I know it wont be because I know the conditions the league have laid down, After 3 0r 4 go at this I think the slow witted fans are catching on to me, I tell them I wont get the begging bowls out but I will ask them to buy there season tickets for next season, ha ha I forgot to tell them there might not be a next season because I am increasing the debt by not paying current payments to the taxman, but I have always been honest I have told them if we have the money we pay them if we havent we dont, clever eh but the fans know the club is theirs not mine well it is is when I want money from them but not when they want to know something, well I have to go and attend a board meeting we are holding it at Madamme Tausauds because the rest of the dummies cannot get away,

A thoroughly disappointing but entirely predicatable result.
How many times last season did we do what Grimsby did to us yesterday? Just shows how open this league is when players have the motivation and desire to win.
And that's the point. I think EH and the players have been told to make one of the play off places only and then do whatever it takes to get to the final, as this would generate maximum income.
And although it would be nice to reach League One it's obvious that this club cannot afford to operate at that level when it struggles to make ends meet where we are.
Ideal scenario for EM is defeat in the play off final, use the extra money to clear a chunk of the debts, no promotion bonuses to pay and of course no pay rises for the players next season.

Do you know if the defender (unsure of name) was a loan player. His throw ins were fantastic. He threw from the sideline into the box a few times.

I was at the game on Saturday. We never played our best. Their second goal was a joke. But one of our goals came of a very poor mistake by their keeper. They also deserved a penalty.
The score justified the game. They came out fighting.
The red card was harsh but I never had a clear view. Did anyone catch it on the league show?

Anyway onwards and upwards. If Grimsy can beat us and they are at the bottom of the league. There is nothing to stop us winning our next games.

I have faith.

I feel Eddie was being diplomatic when he said we got what we deserved. we did not play at our best but had to contend with a team playing on the edge of legality for most of the match and often going well beyond. There was not one challenge by their centre half which did not involve him holding pushing or holding down fletch and many of their other players were as bad. My view of the sending off wasnt brillianrt but because the break was quick the ref was probably 30to 50 yards behind play also. Goulding got in front of their player and as he had done all match he had his arms allover Goulding and as far as I could see Goulding was just trying to get his own arm loose. I dont think there was any intent to elbow. As previously said their second goal was handled in not subtly as you sometimes see with the hand next to the head but at arms length. How neither the linesman or ref didnt see it I dont know. The refs performance was worse than ours and he gifted them the 3 points. Im not sure we did enough to win but a draw would have been fairer. To make another point - i disagree with the post about our performance on monday which at times was excellent and deserved the draw. Our destiny is still I think in our own hands and our home form will bee important. All the teams will drop points Many have to play each other and there will be surprises along the way. If we dont make it then we try again next year. Simples!

His name is Jude Stirling,he was a last minute loan from MK dons. The Solent commentators knew all about him having seen him in action vSaints earlier this season.
