Cherries: Howe full of praise for Jeff

DELIGHTED Eddie Howe watched Jeff Goulding boost Cherries’ promotion hopes with a potentially priceless strike and then praised the forward’s attitude.

Substitute Goulding earned Cherries a last-gasp point in the League Two promotion showdown at Meadow Lane last night.

The former non-league frontman struck his first goal of the season with a fine volley deep into injury time to secure a deserved 2-2 draw against Notts County.

Cherries trailed to Lee Hughes’s 22nd-minute opener but top scorer Brett Pitman equalised five minutes into the second half with a free-kick.

Hughes looked to have sealed a victory for Magpies when he headed home a cross from County playmaker Ben Davies.

But Cherries were not to be denied and again fought back, with their spirited finish rewarded when Goulding fired home to keep the Dorset outfit in second spot.

Howe said: “Jeff has been really patient and has worked ever so hard. He has always shown a good attitude – even when he has not been in the team – and I think that was his reward because he has stuck at it.

“I thought he was bright when he came on and, technically, he is very good. He showed that with the finish because it was a great strike.”

Howe added: “I thought we deserved it and I thought we were excellent in the second half.

“I am really pleased with the point.

“It keeps us in a good position and it might be an important point come the end of the season.

“To come here and perform like we did gives us belief. The players need to take that on now.”

A well earned point and we played the better Football. Goulding took his goal very well on a tacky pitch and maybe if we attacked more we could have won but happy with a point, watch out Grimsby.

Grimsby is a worry because they are fighting for their lives and dont lose money despite their position.
Goulding took it very well. Also great free-kick from Brett, he's owed us one of them for a while now!!
10 games to go, County play most of their games against top 8 teams so points are available.

Great spirit. I think we were lucky, but all credit to the lads who just never gave up.
On another point - can the Echo get rid of that awful picture of Fletch looking like a lagered 18 year old!

Did the team invite their goalie to kick down their change-room door?

A much deserved point on the balance of play. I felt when NC went 2-1 up they tried shutting up shop and protecting their lead instead of looking for a 3rd to wrap up the points! Something we have been guilty of in the past and we all know the best form of defense is attack (until at least time added on-lol). 78pts secured the third auto-spot last season so 14pts to find out of the 30 remaining on that formula but feel it will take more at least 18 or 20 so 6 or 7 wins in last 10 should do nicely. Agree with earlier blogs we must NOT regard Grimsby with disrespect due to their lowly position pride would dictate that they scrap for every point now to get out of the drop zone. So lads lets get this well earned point out of your systems for another tough encounter on Saturday and give the fans another good awayday like last night. Plenty time to party on May 8th. All the best for the 10 "cup-finals" ahead. Just take them one game at a time and don't dwell on the last result good or bad. Its ours now if we produce performances like last night. GOOD LUCK

Great game though and I am really pleased that we played so well in front of the cameras.

Grimsby away on Saturday, which will not be easy as they are fighting for their league status but nevertheless very winnable!!

Bury and Chesterfield have both dropped points recently and Notts County still have to play 5 teams in the top 8 (Rochdale (H), Bury (H), Northampton (A), Rotherham (H) & Shrewsbury (A)) where our promotion rivals will take points off each other. Also, Lee Hughes is out for the next 2 games after picking up his tenth booking last night.

Our goal difference is also better than Bury and Chesterfield which could prove very important.

The team showed great spirit.
Notts County should be ashamed at the state of their pitch - it was in a terrible state.
Hughs is an out and out thug. He is a disgusting man, and a bad example for any youngsters watching any football match he plays in.
Do we know of any extra injuries from last night?

Personally i do not think it creates a very good impression to youngsters that the thug Hughes was "man of the match"

Yeh Hughes shouldn't have got man of the match. In fairness I think it should have been that guy Ben Davies. Thought he played very well. He can come play on the left for us if he feels like it.

Great from Jeff Goulding. I have been critical of him in the past but hopefully he can kick on from here and start scoring some goals.

10 to go!

UTCIAD!!

ps. was really enjoyable seeing us on Sky. I think we gave a good account of ourselves and I wouldn't be surprised to see the cameras back next season!
