Cherries: Goulding is the most unlikely of heroes for Howe

A BRILLIANT finish from substitute Jeff Goulding sealed a thrilling and deserved point for Cherries in tonight’s promotion showdown at Meadow Lane.

The former non-league star struck with a fine 12-yard volley as Eddie Howe’s men left it late – very late – to claim a 2-2 draw against in-form Notts County.

Magpies, with four consecutive wins under the management of former Dean Court striker Steve Cotterill, looked to have done enough to see off spirited Cherries.

A goal in each half from top scorer Lee Hughes – either side of a Brett Pitman free-kick – had put the hosts in charge.

But Cherries refused to throw in the towel and they got their reward when Goulding, without a goal during this injury-plagued campaign, came good just when his team needed him most.

Cherries’ nine-day break between matches proved sufficient for Liam Feeney to recover from injury, so the winger replaced Josh McQuoid in Howe’s starting line-up.

And in front of the Sky TV cameras, the promotion hopefuls served up an entertaining contest.

The eagerly anticipated clash kicked off in a cauldron of noise, with loud chants led by the home support in the Kop Stand as County claimed an early corner.

Cherries responded moments later as Anton Robinson struck a low drive from 20 yards, which brought a sharp save from Kasper Schmeichel.

Keen to silence the Meadow Lane faithful, Howe’s men came agonisingly close to a goal in the fifth minute. When Magpies failed to deal with a Rhoys Wiggins corner, the ball fell nicely for Alan Connell, but his shot was hacked off the line by County skipper John Thompson with Schmeichel beaten.

Cherries, quick to utilise the speed of Feeney on the right flank, again found joy through that tactic when Pitman brilliantly released the winger. But his low, powerful shot was kept out by the solid Schmeichel, with the rebound just out of reach for the onrushing Steve Fletcher.

The game swung in Magpies’ favour, though, when they opened the scoring slightly against the run of play on 22 minutes. The lively Ben Davies turned inside Wiggins and went down under the left-back’s challenge, and referee Colin Webster had no hesitation in awarding what looked a clear penalty.

And although Hughes’s weak spot kick was kept out by Shwan Jalal, County’s talisman was on hand to fire home the easiest of rebounds.

Enlivened, Magpies went in search of a second. Stand-in centre-half Marvin Bartley produced a superb covering tackle on Luke Rodgers to keep the hosts at bay, before the impressive Davies saw a neat lob ruled out for offside.

Despite creating less chances towards the end of the first half, the visitors wasted little time in pressing forward on the resumption and got back into the game within five minutes – thanks to Pitman.

Connell won a free-kick 20 yards from goal and the Jerseyman threaded a low shot through a crowded penalty area and beyond Schmeichel – his 20th goal of a fine season.

However, Cherries could only manage to stay on terms for just four minutes as they conceded a soft second. Davies was allowed time to compose himself and deliver a teasing cross from the right and Hughes was left unopposed to head high past Jalal at the far post.

Howe freshened up his frontline by introducing Goulding for Fletcher on the hour and, with the hosts appearing content to try to close out the match, Cherries warmed to their task.

As they looked to unlock the Magpies defence – the division’s meanest on home turf – chances began to come.

A neat exchange between Connell and Goulding almost came off, before the energetic Robinson then saw a firm drive blocked after some neat footwork had evaded the attentions of Hunt in the right channel.

Cotterill switched to a five-man midfield, with one up front, and in a bid to counter Cherries’ attacking endeavours he sent on experienced midfielder Jamie Clapham to protect the County backline.

But Cherries continued to push and a glorious opportunity to seal a point came with three minutes remaining. A superb cross from Wiggins found Pitman and he connected well with a diving header, only to see Schmeichel parry the effort. Feeney, well placed for the rebound, could only find the side netting.

All was not lost, though, and Cherries did get another opportunity to level – and they took it with delight.

Bradbury was the provider and, when the veteran utility man picked out Goulding in the centre, the substitute produced surely one of the most important goals of his career to send Cherries home happy.

So well played lads, tough game and you all battled well and got a great point. Hughes should be banned and fined for his disgusting stamps on bartley and garry, the officials are a disgrace but no change there hey!

Very proud of EH and the team (including the board) for the continued efforts and results.

Keep up the good work, nearly there to automatic promotion.

Yes very proud and feel Hughes should have been red-carded. The team shwed how to fight for the cause whilst playing fairly. Those "supporters" who claim the team don't have the bottle have been proved wrong again. Delighted the team came away with a point. 10 games to go, surely this commitment will see us home now?

Completely agree with the earlier posts. It was a brave, battling performance and the lads certainly deserved the draw. I thought Marv and Ryan were superb in the heart of the defence. As for Hughes...what a thug! Two deliberate stamps and a deliberate handball straight from the Maradonna textbook! How did he finish up with just a yellow card?

A well deserved point and what a goal from Goulding who had been ineffective until he scored - well done

I was disappointed that we did not start playing until fifteen minutes from time - we played some great attacking football in search for the equaliser. A little more belief during the game may have produced even greater rewards - for all their physical presence Clownty are no great shakes

The earlier posts about Hughes' behaviour are spot on - he has been a spiteful player throughout his career and I am grateful that our players were not seriously hurt. Thank goodness he misses a couple of games

Well done to Eddie and the players this was a brave, battling performance

A well earned point and probably deserved.

Hughes - most employers would not touch people who have a record like his, but football is a funny game with silly money in some places. I wonder if anyone will look at it with such enthusiasm that they do in higher leagues, I think not.

Well done to all the lads. They played by far the better football, created the better chances, scored the best two goals and kept going to the very end, to earn a well deserved draw.
Their comeback in the last fifteen minutes was excellent, after going behind so soon after the equaliser by Brett. Congratulations to all, they did us proud on the night in front of the all seeing cameras
I think Mr. Hughes might have had ambitions to be a jockey in his youth, having seen his rather odd goal celebration. All part of an entertaining evening.

So who were these supporters who didn't think the team had bottle? I can't remember any posts of that ilk. Some of us thought we would do well to get a point and that's exactly what happened.
How the linesman thought that Rogers wasn't active I'll never know. He was definately offside for their second and possibly might have skimmed the ball with the top of his shiny head.
Hughes is a thug. We all know that anyway. He definately stamped on Marvin but fortunately for everyone, missed. He definately followed in on Ryan and both incidents were red cards.
Despite the goal, I couldn't see why Fletch came off for Jeff Goulding but there we are, he was proved right in the end.
The draw was a great result against the form team in the division. I thought Marvin had a blinder, considering he was out of position.
Well done lads. Please don't lose the momentum on Saturday vs Grimsby. It can easily happen.

If that was a premiership game Gary Liniker et al would be suggesting that the FA/FL should use video evidence and retrospectively punish Hughes the thug. As it is only! a league two game no one will do anything about it I guess that the FA and FL for you. In any case Notts County are protected by different rules as AFCB aren't they!

DC Addict, I think the reason Goulding came on for Fletch may have had something to do with the pitch and Fletch's knees. The pitch was so bouncy and could have caused him more damage. I was surprised that McQuoid wasnt given a run, especially late on as Feeney was causing trouble wide. After Josh's last performance he deserved to come on probably for Connell.
Cracking result, everyone would have taken a point here and Jeff may just have scored the most important goal of the season.
As for Hughes, he puts it about, always has. Marv certainly doesnt get bullied and they shook hands when Hughes was subbed, just glad he didnt make contact otherwise could have been a different story. As for the Garry one, Hughes watched where his foot was all the way and didnt try to move. I cant believe someone would want to stamp on someone elses head, but that didnt look too pretty.
So pleased with that result because that keeps us right in the mix now and deservedly so!!

I kept getting wound up by the Sky commentator. He kept saying County had won from the 64th minute. He kept saying about us not scoring enough goals and not creating enough through the season. Kept raving about Hughes & Schmeichel? Where was our praise??
Our team is picked by the FL, Eddie just has to sort them out tactically and does an amazing job. Dont think County had a central midfielder in centre defence. A striker left midfield and another striker at right back did they?
We all know Hughes & Schmeichels wages are a distance away from ours so technically they should be better. Give me Jalal over Schmeichel any day of the week.
It seemed that they wasnt aware of the situation that Eddie has dealt with pretty much from his first day as being a manager.
If we go up it has got to be one of the greatest achievements in football considering size of squad etc.
Just bugs me that with all we have suffered as a club and it's supporters we still dont get any proper recognition.

Agreed. The most vomit producing moment was when the commentator started banging on about the poor Clownty fans and how the poor darlings had suffered so with the upheaval. Oh the horror of it all!!!
No mention of, as you say, Captain and defensive rock Pearce, or indeed any of the injuries we've had all through this season.

I watched the game at the Club. Brilliant atmosphere from us fans. Hughes should never be allowed to play again, but the FL obviously tell refs to ignore his behaviour, especially when playing against AFCB. the lads were magnificant, never gave up and a cracker from Pitman and Goulding. In fact Goulding looked quite stunned when her scored. Don't think he could quite believe it himself as to what significance that goal was to the team and how it could be the pinnacle goal of the season. Well done to every body, thanks AFCB and the lads for a very good evening. SKY need to stop being so biased towards Notts County, or again are the FL paying them to be. UTCIAD.

Better wait to see if that chairman from Clownty keeps his word. From what we saw of him last night I would say it's highly unlikely.
Would the tape go to the FA or the FL? Either way Hughes should be punished. Both incidents were a red card. Tonight, out of interest, I shall look on the sky box to see how close the linesman was to the stamp on Marvin.

I missed the chairmans comments so comment on him, but that is one club that has a big ego problem so it doesnt suprise me.
As for the bartley incident i thought he was virtually in line with it but then i suppose the ball was on its way up the pitch at the time the lino would of carried on jogging.

Hi dc addict, my comment didnt just relate to this site as most who post here re on the pitch matters tend to be positive. I did hear quite a few people moan after the Dag game about another defeat in a big game, not being up for it and so we wouldnt go up etc and of course after the mini slump in January. The level of commitment from Eddie's team has been brilliant in the face of great adversity. Would agree with the comments on the sky coverage but would say that the Rochdale manager was good, quite rightly saying we deserved a draw. Obviously pre match comments about Bournemouth's plight may annoy people but is understandable given he has had to balance the books.

We must have been at different games. I thought that Fletch had one of his most ineffective games of the season, and as soon as Goulding came on we posed much more threat up front. His mobility and running off the ball made a huge difference to Pitman who had more space to operate in, and for the last twenty minutes we had much the better of the game.

Cracking result. That point could make all the difference come the end of the season. I was surprised to see the stadium half empty. With their debts and current overheads, how are County going to avoid going into administration. Their chairman said he is able to service the debt, but for how long?
Marv and Liam stood out for me. Unfortunately they probably caught the eye of a few managers as well. I think we will make automatic promotion but may also loose a few of the squad in the summer. Merrycherry, I am also looking forward to Rochdale. Dont think we can catch them but nice to beat them after what they did at Dean Court. Havent got an issue with Keith Hill. I respect his view on clubs that go into admin and then write off debts as he speaks as a club manager balancing the books, whilst competing with clubs like Notts Co and AFCB who have better players they cant afford, and not as a fan who has suffered at the hands of bad owners. He was a lone voice in the Sky team last night to praise AFCB's performance and say we deserved the draw.
