Tennis: Seeds crash out at West Hants

IT was a day to forget for Dorset stars James Whike and Emma Smith at the Rokill-sponsored Bournemouth Open yesterday.

Boys’ 18/u second seed Whike crashed out 6-4 3-6 1-0 (10) to 13th seed Stephen Winrow in the third round at the West Hants Club, while fourth seed Smith was downed 1-6 7-6 1-0 (6) by Helen Adams in the women’s singles.

In the boys’ 16/u event, Bradley Burnett-Smith found fifth seed Stephen Crawshaw too hot to handle, succumbing 6-3 6-1, but there was better news for fellow Dorset players Gabriella Taylor, Thomas Gill, Stefan Burnett and Tim Prosser.

Taylor continued her fine run by dispatching eighth seed Meghan Montgomerie 7-5 6-1 in the girls 12/u competition, with Gill ending Alex Hudson’s hopes 6-7 6-4 1-0 (4) in the men’s singles.

Burnett put out ninth seed Jonathan Davies with ease 6-0 6-1 in the boys’ 16/u event, while 13th seed Prosser whitewashed Julian Cash 6-0 6-0 in the same category.

Meanwhile second seed Alastair Barnes, fresh from starring for Dorset in their Aegon County Cup campaign in Eastbourne last week, continued his passage through the men’s singles draw with a 6-1 6-1 win over Jacques Sheehan late on Tuesday evening.

Barnes will now play Richard Westman in the third round.
