Speedway: Birthday bonus for boss May

BUCCANEERS boss Garry May enjoyed a double celebration on his 52nd birthday as their spectacular late charge earned a valuable victory at Mildenhall today.

Jerran Hart, with 16 points from a reserve berth, and Jay Herne, with 12 from five rides, led the way for Bournemouth Castle Cover as they bagged their second away league win of the season.

The triumph, which came after Mark Baseby took the chequered flag in heat 14 to confirm his full fitness after wearing a £500 knee brace for the first time in competitive action, propelled the Dorset side back up to second place in the National League.

With Hart and Danny Warwick bagging a vital 5-1 in race 13 to break a 36-36 deadlock, and Herne combining with Baseby for a 4-2 in the final race, Buccaneers plundered three match points and are only one behind leaders Weymouth in the table.

May, whose side stretched their unbeaten league run to seven matches, said: “It was a great team performance all the way through the side.

“All the boys did their job and were good out of the gate on a very slick track.

“We probably could have got the full four points for an away win, but Jay dropped a chain when he was second in heat 12.

“Danny had two average rides but then raised his game in heat 13 to do a tremendous job and partner Jerran to a 5-1 which swung the meeting in our favour again after we’d led earlier.

“It was my birthday so to get the three points and knock Weymouth out of the cup on Thursday means it has been a great week for me personally.”

May, whose side overcame a 16-point deficit to crush Wildcats at Poole and record a stunning 102-86 aggregate cup quarter-final triumph, added: “Jerran had seven rides again at Mildenhall and he did a great job once more.

“He really has been a key player at reserve for us this year. He missed the gate in heat 14, but that was it. Otherwise he was brilliant.

“The track was slick and the gating was where we won it. It also helped Mark, who was wearing his new knee brace for the first time.

“He came up trumps in heats 14 and 15 after taking a fall earlier in the meeting, and this was a crucial win for us which keeps the pressure on Weymouth at the top.”
