CHERRIES: TESTING TIME

BOSS Eddie Howe is leaving no stone unturned as he prepares his Cherries squad for the coming campaign.

Howe’s charges will today kick off their pre-season at Southampton Solent University under the watchful eye of Stewart Bruce-Low, senior lecturer in sport and exercise science.

And Howe has also enlisted the help of strength and conditioning coach Jon Dalzell who will spend the next month working on a daily basis with the players.

Outlining the programme at Solent University, Howe told the Daily Echo: “The lads will go through a series of tests which I think will benefit them for the coming season.

“The VO2 max test is one of the best tests you can do. The players run on a treadmill wearing an oxygen mask and it tests a number of things.

“There will also be tests for lumbar strength, a vertical jump which assesses the power in your legs, ECG for the heart, lung function, nutrition and height, weight and fat tests. We will cover the full spectrum to make sure the lads are fit and healthy.

“These tests are specifically designed to try to get their maximum heart rate. This is something we will use during pre-season to test how hard the lads are working so it’s a bit more scientific.

“I think it’s important. Players always want to know that what they are doing is beneficial for them. Any work you do as a coach, you want to know it’s benefiting them and making them ready for the season.”

Howe worked alongside Dalzell during his time at Portsmouth.

“I enjoyed my first pre-season with him immensely,” said the Cherries boss.

“He is very intelligent and knows exactly what he’s doing. He is probably one of the best in his field and we’re very lucky to have him for pre-season.

“He’s agreed to come in on a voluntary basis and I know the lads will benefit from having him around.

“His role encompasses so many different things. He will be looking at strength, core work and the fitness side of things.

“It should be a very interesting pre-season for us.”

This is good to see and that EH is getting them into shape. I saw the lads several times at Fitness First gym last season going through their paces and too be honest was not that impressed. On average they were never there more than half an hour which even for the average 'man -in the-street' isn't long enough to benefit from. To succeed in sport you must put in the graft i.e. Train to improve your fitness levels all the time. Look at Andy Murray for example 2 years ago bags of potential talent but he wasn't putting in the graft, and the fitness regime he is now doing today and now look at the difference (practising at 10am the morning after his gruelling 5-setter the other night that didn't finish until 10.30pm the previous night- thats impressive). So AFCB boys take a leaf out of Andy's regime and then you may not fade like in most of the last 10mins of the tough league games last season! As Brucie.F says 'Points means prizes'. The play-offs beckon only 7pts short last season if we didn't have those 17pts cruelly deducted. Go for it!

Blimey, the players will be knackered before the season starts!Seriously though, anyone remember my report on seeing Fletch pounding the streets of Bear Cross at 10 at night. This was before he rejoined us,and the players were being berated by many for clubbing late into the night.Perhaps some of Fletch`s committment rubbed off,as we all saw the change in the team after he re-signed.
On a separate note, season tickets. The club shop told me last week that the cards would be in this week ready for printing,so I popped in on the off-chance yesterday. Now the cards won`t be arriving for another two weeks and was told that we didn`t need them as the season doesn`t start until August, not the best attitude or customer service I think you`ll find. What if I`ll be away for the next few weeks or wanted to buy something in the shop and claim my 10% discount.
There has been very little info on when STs will be available. With the new openness from the club maybe some updates could be published to let the supporters know what is happening. The AFCB website gets updates everyday, latest ticket info being the Spurs away allocation is sold out.

Mossy1 - The staff in the ticket office are just passing on the information they have been given.

The ticket office staff are now being expected to do three months ST work in just a few weeks, AND send out DVDs.

From memory, STs are rarely available before the end of July. You don't NEED your ST now and if you wanted to buy something in the shop all they would need to do is look you up on the computer to prove you were a ST holder.

I have never found the staff to be anything but friendly and professional but faced with having been paid late for months and now having to work stupid hours to catch up, they really don't need idiots hassling them for STs that they cannot use for another 5 weeks.

Yes, Fletch has done his fair share of gym work. All the hours spent in the Gym to build up his upper body strength has helped him greatly to hold off the big centre backs. Alan Connell, Jeff Goulding and Brett Pitman take note. However, I'm amazed he goes road running with a virtually permanently dodgy knee. Such hard surfaces are so very bad for knees or ankles. I know from personal experience.

Perhaps you should read what I wrote again instead of flying off.I was letting people know what was happening with STs simply repeating what I was told as there didn`t seem to be any info.If there is info to pass on why not stick it on the website. Finally, nowh
ere in my post did I insult anyone.

If it wasn`t the big man then he has a very good double running the streets near where he lives. If I remember rightly Fletch was training on his own due to the amount of travelling needed to get to Crawley, even so I do agree running at that time does seem extreme.

Looks as if we will need a few trialists in to cope with the number of friendlies and players who will be out for pre-season.
There are several hundred decent players out of contract from 1 July so Eddie will no doubt have a pretty long list of those he will want to take a look at, and talk to.
Troy-Archibald-Henvi
lle, the young Spurs defender,Stuart Fleetwood, Charlton striker and a left back and left winger, perhaps on loan, would give the squad a decent shape and balance.

I can remember Tony Pulis saying how he was going to get the boys super fit for the start of the season and he ended up going that year so lets not get too carried away just yet.
