Defensive selection dilemma for Cherries boss Howe

BOSS Eddie Howe admits the return of defensive linchpins Tommy Elphick and Charlie Daniels has given him a pleasant selection dilemma.

Daniels started Cherries’ 1-0 win at Oldham following an eight-week layoff, while Elphick was on the bench at Boundary Park after six weeks on the sidelines.

The pair are again set to be in contention when Cherries host League One strugglers Bury at Dean Court tomorrow (3pm).

Howe told the Daily Echo: “It is a really nice dilemma for me. It has been the one area in our squad where we have been light on numbers, especially with Miles Addison out long term.

“The centre-half and full-back positions have always been a bit of a worry and being without Tommy and Charlie really stretched us. When everyone is fit, we feel we have as good a defence as any in the league.

“All the players are good characters and, whoever doesn’t start, I know they will support the team.”

Elphick, who had been captaining Cherries in the absence of Addison, has described promotion as a “life-changing” experience having gone up with Brighton in 2010.

He told the club website: “I wouldn’t be here now if I hadn’t got promoted with Brighton. Part of the reason this club wanted to bring me in was because I know what it takes. To have that on your CV changes your life.”

As long as they are fit enough both tommy and Charlie need to be in the first team. Hopefully we can then see the best of Matt Richie in a forward position unless he is benched again!

Both Tommy and Charlie to play for me. If we were to listen to that "expert" from Lincoln, both would never be seen in the first team again.....they must have at least 2 reserve games before being considered for the first team as they would seriously weaken the team he said!! As we don't have a reserve team and only have a couple of organised development games, we would have to wait until next season to see them again. Surely the daily training will get them at least 75% match fit which will only improve by playing them. Quality players do not weaken the side.

No brainer for me. No coincidence the dodgy spell started when Tommy got injured.
Both should start and even if they can only play 60-70 minutes we can bring Seaborne on and maybe put Foggy at left back. Lets see what damage Ritchie can really do on the right. My boy is mascot tomorrow so I dont want to be blaming him if we dont win for not bringing us luck

Think elphick and Daniels need game time so start them at least. Ritchie is an outstanding player so time to get him further up the pitch. All looking good but need some goals upfront. Time too for non strikers to hit a few more goals too.

The squad looks good again now Charlie and Tommy are back and if they’re not 100% fit we at least have cover now whoever starts.

Should get ‘certain’ Swindle fans boo-hoo-hooing all the way back to their caravans now we have playing resources again…..know what I’m saying LeGob!

We have'nt played at all well, including in games we have won, since Daniels has been out. One player does not make a team I accept, but Charlie missing has certainly been key to our poor run of form. Welcome back both!

Richie was on the bench because of his head injury and for no other reason., caution was in order and Ed was right to be careful with Matt.

With all these experts on here it's amazing that we actually need a manager at all.Lets leave the Team selection to Ed shall we.

What dilemma? If they are fit they should both start, simple. They are two of the best players in the squad, why leave them out. Richie can now show us his real talent in his best position. Hoping for better weather! Up the cherries!

Sounds like you think you are as much an expert on team selection as anyone else has been on here today!! So like you say why don't we all leave the team selection to Ed!! Pot Kettle etc comes to mind greenshoes!!

Give it a rest green shoes, the whole point of this forum is to pass comment on these things. If you don't like what you read dont log on! I think I like must fans want to see one of the best players in the division play in his best position. It is not a criticism of EH as injuries have forced his hand, just an observation from an 'expert'!
