Cherries: Howe pondering Sheringham loan spell

CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe believes a loan spell could benefit Charlie Sheringham as the striker continues his return from a lengthy injury layoff.

Sheringham took his first steps on the comeback trail when he was given a 45-minute run-out during Cherries’ Hampshire Senior Cup win at AFC Totton 11 days ago.

The 24-year-old had been sidelined for 14 months since fracturing a bone in his foot when he netted his maiden goal in the Football League during Cherries’ 1-1 draw at Brentford on Boxing Day 2011.

Howe, who admitted he was reluctant to arrange too many development squad games for fear of losing players to injury, said he was weighing up the prospect of sending out Sheringham. “Charlie may need a loan period to get some games for the last part of his rehabilitation,” said Howe. “He has been out for a long time and has done well in training. He has looked bright and sharp but has only had one game.

“I think the next stage for him will be to get some regular football but we will have to wait and see. If we get a couple of injuries, we may have to re-assess it but I think it would be a good path for him.”

Sheringham, a prolific goalscorer at non-league level, joined Cherries from Conference South outfit Dartford in October 2011 and was restricted to just six appearances, including four from the bench, before he was struck down by injury.

He told the Daily Echo: “I am fit and it is just a case of getting my match fitness up. It has been very up and down for me over the past 14 months. It was a nightmare to get injured after I had just got into the team. Hopefully, I am at the back-end of it now.”

Signed by Lee Bradbury, Sheringham has seen the landscape change dramatically during his time on the sidelines. He played no part under former boss Paul Groves and must now try to prove himself to Howe.

Sheringham said: “It has been difficult because I haven’t been involved with the first team as much as I would have liked. I have seen new co-owners come in and managers come and go.

“I have been on the periphery and it has been tough. I need to impress the manager and try to get myself in the team. Ever since I came here, I have always been determined to give it my best shot.”

Sheringham, who is out of contract in the summer, added: “Although that is in the back of my mind, the main thing for me is getting fit and making sure my foot is all right. I am not too worried about the contract because what will be, will be. I believe in myself and believe I can play at this level so, hopefully, it will come.”

My view is that today is not do or die. Of course victory is desired but realistically 5 wins will assure us of a play off position. Tranmere have taken 30 points from 25 games. Assuming they continue their very average performance they would likely take circa 9 points from next seven games. Assuming we win 5 of the next 7 and I think we will, we would be 4 points clear of them before last game. Lets then consider Swindon who go to Yeovil, Doncaster and Sheff Utd in their run in. Imagine if they drew all 3, that would be 6 dropped points. Point is there is a long way to go and I would say it is far more likely than not that we will finish in the top six. Personally I do feel top two is very unlikely now, even if we won all eight. I predict we will finish 4th or 5th.

Having got the win midweek would be disappointed not to get a pint at least today. Oldham though will be another physical scrap. Agree don't believe we can get automatic spot but would prefer a wembley day out anyway !

If Charlie is not going to play a part during the run in then a loan move for him must be the best option, he must be very frustrated right now and just wants to play. It does though raise the question with our lack of goals of late why Charlie can't give us something different even if it's for 15 minutes at the end of games, we don't have many options at the moment do we? As for today, no it's not a must win at all costs but getting 3 points would make a massive difference to our cause, we need to get on a run of wins again, not because if we lose we will be out of the race but because we want the team to get confident again going into these final matches. So although a win is not essential it is important!

I think we need the three points today as this will get as back in a play-off position and send a message out to our rivals that the bad run is over. I think automatic promotion is probably beyond us but if we start scoring goals again I wouldn't rule it out.

Looking at remaining fixtures both Sheff Utd and Doncaster are likely to get mid 85/6 points.

Bearing in mind we can only get max 85 now, automatic feels very unlikely.

That said football is not played on paper and results will not all go to form.

Doncaster in particular did not look at all impressive, so this could prove wildly out!

For what its worth, I think Swindon will be third on about 80, but this depends massively on their three results at SU, DR and Yeovil.

AFCB and Yeovil just behind on 78ish, with Brentford just nicking 6th above Walsall and Coventry. Tranmere could fall as low as 9th.

If we do lose today, dont listen to the inevitable doom mongers that its all over, because it wont be.

That said, as long as Tuesdays injuries do not further affect our line up today, I dont think we will lose.

Should get three points today,Barnard will probably score tho!!don't think it's vital but like frankie said it is important to send out a msg!as for sheringham,I do think he can play this level and gives us another option if we need to change things!if we do send him on loan and we get injurys will EH recall him as stated?didn't get jonathan Meade back and we needed him!!!!!!!good luck to the boys today, utciad

The teams mentioned above all seem to have difficult games and the results are too close to call...so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and not making any predictions other than say we'll have to be bl. lucky to get ''automatic'
Could Charlie join Havant with Bradders or is he too good for that league?

You can have a pint on me if we finish top, as I backed AFCB at 80/1 each way the day before Eddie Howe brought football home.

Im sure our good friend from Lin-con has scouted Burton on many occassions and could bore you for hours discussing team shape at corners, set pieces, etc etc, which foot the keeper kicks with, blah blah blah.!!!!.

I think you find that we will finish in the league where we are at the moment i.e between 7th and 10th any higher would be a vey welcome bonus.
.
i do not consider this to be bad thing, when taking into account the start we had to the season but as you can appreciate the injuries have taken their toll along with our failure to hit the target on a regular basis.
.
It's is the scoring habit at this stage of the season that actually gets you promoted !! WE ARE NOT DOING IT ARE WE.
.
People say we have to play teams at the bottom or mid-table. this can be detrimental as these sides will scrap for their lives, and those in mid-table will field players that are playing for contracts and young players out to prove thmselves.
.
I have seen many times were promotion seeking sides have come a cropper at home to an already relegated side who will play without fear.
.
There is penty of apparent evidence as to why we will not be promoted
i.e lack of goals - injuries to key players - lack of a target man to change formation ad shape etc.
.
Where is the evidence that we will be promoted ?????
.
This is a sensible post that only requires senible responses.

shiminto back on form again today I see, we almost had a sensible day yesterday but you had to go an ruin in today!! We have every chance of a top six finish, 7th to 10th, I suppose by your own predictions that's your idea of being positive right? We will finish in the top 6!!! I am certain of it because of our record against teams in the lower half of the league this season, look who we play over the coming 6 games, that's based on actual facts and I can back that prediction up!! I may have agreed with you yesterday that today is a tough game but there we will end this, I do not see a defeat today as the end of the season, you have all but written us off in every game we have played this season, honestly we should be rock bottom on about 8 points according to you!! So I hope you come on here when we finish in the top 6 and take the medicine which will be dished out!!

If we want automatic promotion we will have to win every game, it's as simple as that. Five wins from eight will see us in the play-offs barring something extraordinary and a likely tie against a big team of bully boys like Sheffield Utd who will see us off over two legs like the Huddersfield bully boys did two years ago.
As for today's game, Oldham are a decent side as they proved during their cup run. I don't expect us to beat them on our current form. Yes we got a less than emphatic win in midweek against the team bottom of the form league, but we've been hopeless since Daniels and Elphick were injured. Poor defending and goalscorers low on confidence usually means one thing. Defeat. A point at best today I fear, but I hope I'm wrong.

My post today is based on a constructive point of order and is open to free debate. I was not intending to be negative. I was just pointing out what is abundantly clear.
.
Yes I agree with you we do have every chance of finishing in the top six. But that would be BASED ON SCORING GOALS AND WINNING MATCHES. Which you can see that we are NOT doing at the moment of which in my view is primarily down to being without key players.
.
Yes we won at Stevenage but that was a penalty, we still failed to score againt poor oppostion from open play.
.
I do thank you for seeing the light yesterday. I would now ask you to do the same today by re-reading my post and re-assessing where I am coming from.

In addition, I think you will find that I am not alone in my views as many other posters are beginning to see what I see i.e Not scoring therefore losing matches.
.
You must realise that Oldham are fighting for their lives, they are at home, we are not scoring as you know.
.
So the worst thing that could happen today is to let them score first, ref our agreed point yesterday. Because if they do it will be game over.
.
With that said let's hope we manufacure some form of win today.

Still fancy Swindon for a top 2 spot and your ahead of us by a point- still think its fantasy. Going to be a great run in.
