Cherries: Howe's men third after MK win (with video)

CHERRIES moved into third place in the League One standings after a simple 3-0 win at MK Dons this afternoon.

Lewis Grabban’s ninth-minute strike set Eddie Howe’s men on their way, before Marc Pugh made it 2-0 following Ryan Lowe’s sending-off for a horror tackle on Tommy Elphick.

Harry Arter completed a superb second-half performance with a sweet drive from distance on 84 minutes.

Howe named an unchanged line-up from the 3-1 win over Crewe at Dean Court last weekend, with new signing Matt Ritchie having to settle for a place on the bench.

Cherries made a bright start, livening the lack of atmosphere at a soulless stadium:mk.

Brett Pitman fired over from a good position inside the 18-yard box after two minutes, the Channel Islander having latched on to Steve Cook’s long throw.

And Cherries took a deserved lead after just nine minutes when Grabban took advantage of a poor back pass from Jon Otsemobor to round goalkeeper David Martin and slot home with a cool finish from an acute angle.

Just two minutes later, Grabban went close to doubling Cherries’ lead when his left-foot curler from 18 yards flew narrowly wide.

And although Simon Francis’s mistake moments later let in Ryan Harley, his woeful effort from distance only troubled the corner flag.

Shwan Jalal punched clear under pressure from Lowe on the half-hour as the Dons began to come into the clash, before Pugh fired straight at Martin after neat build-up work between Pitman and Grabban.

Jalal then beat away Lowe’s right-foot shot moments before the break after the former Bury man had beaten the offside trap to close in on the Cherries goalkeeper.

But referee Scott Mathieson had no option but to show Lowe a straight red card for a horrendous challenge on Elphick in first-half stoppage time.

The pair had squared up earlier in the first half, after Elphick had appeared to accuse Lowe of a stamp, and the striker’s poor tackle on the Cherries captain sparked ugly scenes, with Francis and assistant boss Jason Tindall incandescent with rage.

Elphick limped off to be replaced by Ritchie, but as the winger was waiting to come on, Pugh made it 2-0.

Martin saved well with his legs from Grabban’s initial effort, but Pugh burst in from the left channel to blast an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Ritchie slotted in at left-back, with Dan Seaborne taking Elphick’s place at centre-half after the restart, while Steve Cook wore the captain’s armband.

Both Josh McQuoid and Izale McLeod, a half-time substitute, blazed over at each end as the second half started in the same sluggish fashion as the first.

Pitman, meanwhile, should have done better when he headed Ritchie’s cross from the left right into Martin’s hands when unmarked deep inside the 18-yard box.

Some neat work between Pitman and Eunan O’Kane just after the hour saw Pitman fire narrowly over the crossbar, before a patient and meticulous build-up saw Grabban denied by Martin from close range.

McLeod’s blushes were spared moments later when he shot wide from all of two yards after Shaun Williams’s curler had come back off the post during a rare Dons foray into the final third. The referee’s assistant held aloft his flag as the groans rang out from the home support.

McLeod failed to find the target again when he scuffed his effort wide as the clash entered the final 10 minutes but, at the other end, Cherries were in cruise control.

And Arter’s sublime left-foot strike from around 20 yards, which nestled in the top corner after Pitman’s short free kick, put the icing on the cake for Howe’s men six minutes from time.

As the home supporters departed in their droves, Pitman’s left-foot strike came back off the crossbar. The travelling support simply chanted ‘We want more’.

Wow. Great performance, great support, great result - and with Tranmere, Doncaster and Brentford all losing, the afternoon could not possibly have gone better for us (Elphick's injury excepted). Just need Crawley to take care of Swindon now and the beer tonight will taste even sweeter...

Great win, they tried to control us by the sounds of it and slow down the tempo proper, but we were just too hot to handle and control, and were clinical as a top team has to be. Huge win and confidence within the squad must be absolutely sky high. As fans we have to be cautiously optimistic for auto promotion, but you can't help but get a little excited these days..

Astonishing performance from the sounds of it. Well done the 2000+?? who were there. I've been saying if we play to our strengths there is not a team in this league to touch us and today we proved that. Fortunately all the missed chances didn't matter again, but that's the last 2 games we could of had a hat full. Someone's going to cop it before long that's for sure, hope I'm there to see it when it happens... Top by Easter??? Concerned about Tommy Elphick, hope he's ok for Pompey... UTCIAD

Afcbpete every time I tell my wife the score and that we one she asks how can a man (Eddie Howe) make so much difference. My reply is that some people have it some don’t! we are very lucky to have him back and if we keep going like we are there is no reason (not tempting fate!!) why we should not make automatic promotion.

Will you be there next Saturday? I hope you can make it. Up the mighty Cherries

Certainly a great day for the Cherries, Management, Players and Supporters.
I enjoy thinking back to those dark days of administration, deduc
ted points, and bucket collections, even to being encouraged to buy shares in the club to prevent the the sale of the stadium. It does one good to remember those times when looking at the situation today, third in League One with a realistic chance of promotion. We should all be so grateful to everyone who has been involved in bringing about these changes, including the supporters that have stood by the club in some very difficult times.
Keep the faith and the rewards will be forthcoming.

I would not be exagerating if i said the score could easily have been 6 or 7. We made good use of the extra man in the second half running them ragged, just a bit hesitant in front of goal with to many options at times. Well worth the trip, nice ground but wasted on their passionless fans. They did control the first half without really hurting us, well, apart from poor old Tommy anyway.Ritchie did well at LB, you can just imagine him & Pugh in tandom on the left. Right who's next,.... Massive games against Tranmere (A), Doncaster (H), Sheffield Utd (H) and Coventry (H) are going to be decisive. I can see us getting full houses in all the remaining 8 Home Games :)

I still have to pinch myself on how superbly well Eddie Howe has turned things around.

All he'll get is the mandatory 3 game ban.Tommy should be able to sue the b*****d for his premeditated assault, cowardly little f****r.Typical Robinson, tried to defend Alan Smith when he nearly took Harry Arter's legs off back in September but after Di Canio he's the next worst manager for hopping around on the touchline, berating the 4th official and appealing for everything along with those two muppets in his backroom staff,Mick Harford,(as an old Wimbledon player he should hang his head in shame),and Ian Wright.Don't like MK,but of a thuggish team when it's not going their way.

I do speak on here, eating somewhat some humble pie!.

Your squad looks quite impressive and you may well get promoted and Swindon may not?. However I think you may struggle against a large supported Pompey, definitely slip against Cov and Sheff Utd will come back again.

If Swindon had the three players they were hoping for today, they would have thrashed Creepy Crawlies 5-0.

It's not over yet ladies!

If you prove everybody wrong, then good luck, as I really enjoyed championship and premier league seasons as a Swindon fan.

Could be Bournemouth v Saints next year then?

He should've walked for that, after that it was a matter of time before he was sent off. Great result, could've been a whole lot more. Only major thing we need to work on is our finishing. I know we are the top scoring team, but we are also missing plenty.
Just hope Grabban stays fit for the run in.

Firstly, dont speak with ur mouth full, it's rude and we wouldn't want you choking on that humble pie(?????).
Secondly, leave us to worry about Coventry & Sheff utd but Pompey.???. Really.????. Come on, is that the same Pompey you lot stuffed 5-0.???. Come to think of it, probably not, we are kn a new month now so they probably got a whole new squad for the next 28 days.
And lastly who is above you in the league.???. Looks like normal service has resumed. Thanks for our new LB by the way, he looks even better in Red & Black.!!!!!

The tipping point has been breached with the great Bournemouth public now. So log as Maxim continuesto ensure that we retain Eddie and Jason, then 12-13,000 with a new stand would be hugely inadequate. I'm sure they are desperate to sort out Structuredene now, however, with Maxim flashing the cash I would imagine that they will have to pay up in full. We then come to the East stand houses issue, what were the club thinking when they sold this land off for development. However, with Maxim's cash I suppose we could make generous offers to the owners to buy them out and then build an 8,000 seater stand

Steady - bit over the top in your reply - seems you too are getting a bit carried away with it.
At least we are not hiding behind our keyboards like some of your lot did.

We have had one of those weeks, and credit to a squad last night wasn't a 100% fit, a pitch like a ploughed field and thoughts of losing a fantastic manager after the game we managed to play in the second half of the game and get a draw.

Yes with your present squad you should make at least the playoffs if not better, but I agree there are a few teams hitting form and also form teams out of salts - so it will be tight.

I think for us promotion would give us more problems than we already have, we would need to spend on players and ground improvements and I feel personally this would tip the scales again.

Anyway good luck and hope Matt settles in well, your next problem if he does is hanging on to him but atleast you should make a tidy profit out of him after paying only a fee the size of deposit for him.

The Pompey game is potential banana skin - confidence is one thing - arrogance is another ...

Come on chish& fips, lighten up fella. Read it again slowly and you will see there is more than a hint of sarcasm about it.
Not having a dig at Pompey, just applying a little humour to the prceeds. However you all have a choice as to whether you come on here and read it or not.
Arrogance, how very dare you. I believe i posted somewhere last week that all games in this league are difficult games particulary against teams fighting for L1 survival, so dont be expecting Hartlepool to roll-over either.
I should have added that you know when things are getting desperate when you start relying on other teams to do you favours.
Ref- fee paid for Matt Ritchie, however paltry the sum may seem, it was enough to keep Swindle out of admin, so could prove priceless in the long term for you so be gratefull for that at least. Regards to all.!!!

Lighten up !! after the week we have had, the only thing I can think of lighten'g up is a cigarette and I packed that malarkey up 10 years ago.

The Matt situation does cut rather deep and will take a while for the real reasons he went for that ridiculous fee to come out if it ever does. There is a lot more to it I'm certain, and for a owner who said he didn't want to stitch the Town up on his way out - he done a dam good job of doing just that in my opinion.

Good luck anyway

I think the only teams worrying about us now are Tranmere and Doncaster as one of them will be making way for us in the next fortnight for the rest of the season! Those below us are not going to keep up with us if we keep playing the way we did yesterday! Fantastic result only marred by that disgraceful tackle from that "Lowe" life piece of human waste Ryan Lowe who could have ended Tommy's career. He's an absolute scumbag and Karl Robinson should hand him his P45 in the morning. I hope the FA see that and ban him for at least ten games.
Anyway, well done to the team, management and the superb travelling fans who did their best to give Franchise's home dump some atmosphere!
Onwards and upwards we go. Pompey are going to get a thorough stuffing next week. I've bet on a 6-0 win!

Good Morning to all,
Sagadude, you did give me a laugh.. struggle against a LARGE SUPPORTED POMPEY. You are so out of touch .I am a SAINTS fan , but also keep an eye on The Cherries and i think they will soon be taking your place in the auto's. As for us playing The Cherries next year, fine by me there a good side and would give us a good game. Not like your lot in your Shed.

Well done Bournemouth , teriffic away support. This really helps your team away from home, keep it up. A very interesting second half to the season. It is not arrogance to think you will be promoted in a automatic spot the way your side is playing. Keep that support going , fill your stadium and enjoy the promotion i' m sure you will achieve.

Really excellent perfrormance 3-0 away from at a team challenging for a play off spot is top notch. How did they manage to 4-0 up at QPR? The way ranchise played the first half the back 4 playing the ball sideways and backwards it was as if they were the away team. Even when they went 1-0 down they still couldn't get many decent balls forward because we keep our shape and defend from the front. EH/JT have got us really organised. My only concern was that in the first half the midfield gave the ball back to them too easily but Arter made up for it with that special goal. The crowd was 9,300? I think they need a new abacus. Worst foul i've seen this year by Lowe and the ref should've booked for the earlier attempted fore arm smash aimed at Tommy's head. If he'd booked him for that it might have calmed him down and saved what could be a very nasty injury. Well done lads superb performance. Now put Pompey to the sword.

The last time you lot got excited an baiting saints fans when they were in L1 it blew up in your face. Yes its going well for you at the moment but you have hard games coming up so i should hold back a bit with your excitment at the moment as no doubt you will have slip ups as all teams will.

You seem obsessed with us at the moment the fact yesterday we had 5 players with a virus and a disgrace of a pitch we had to play on that was cut up and boggy through the middle. we have probably the best playing surface in L1 and it could effect Ritchie if your pitch isnt up to what he is used to on a weekly basis as it was shocking when we played you.

with our new additions coming in this week do not count us out or do so at your own peril.

Yes me too, think its a bit of a waste of a sub as he never gets played, maybe hes the bench bodyguard after all we have to contend with the various teams thuggish behavior on the touchline !! You never know he might be needed as an emergency centre half the way things are going with injuries the last few weeks, hoping Tommy Elphic isnt too bad, hes been immense this season, and also worried about the Cooke and Daniels situations,

Your the one who keeps posting on here.Your comments are very boring and your team is going to start collapsing, sorry about that. And by the way,you probably weren't there but it rained when you played us at our place and therefore cut the pitch up which is the only way you managed to salvage a point. Now back to mid table mediocrity you go,there's a good boy.

The attendance at the following home game against Crewe was only marginally lower than the one against your lot, and Crewe brought far less fans with them. Fact is, right now, more people are watching AFCB irrespective of the opposition, because they have a good squad and manager, are playing attractive football, and are winning games and rising up the league.
