Darts: Mitchell back in England mix
7:00am Saturday 2nd February 2013 in Latest Sport
DORSET darts star Scott Mitchell was bursting with pride after keeping his place in the England national team.
The BDO ace, known as ‘Scotty Dog’, was this week named in the squad for the British Internationals in Scotland from April 5-7.
Mitchell has been rewarded for his impressive form for Dorset on the county circuit, where he has maintained a high level of performance.
The Bransgore-based thrower hit the headlines last month after finally breaking his Lakeside duck with a win on the world championship oche.
Mitchell, who is a keen follower of local sport and a supporter of Cherries and Pirates, told the Daily Echo: “I was over the moon.
“It is the fifth time I have been selected. To play for England once is pretty special and to think I will have done it five times is pretty cool.
“I have kept up my average at county level and they pick the team through that. Since last time we played, I haven’t lost a county game.”
Reigning Lakeside champion Scott Waites will lead the English challenge north of the border.
Mitchell will also feature alongside household names from the BDO circuit including Tony O’Shea and Martin Adams.
“They are all in there,” added Mitchell. “After five years, I still have to pinch myself when I am lining up singing the national anthem.
“It is overwhelming for a farmer’s kid from Dorset to be with the world stars of darts.”
Mitchell was speaking ahead of competing in the Dutch Open this weekend. The popular event will attract more than 3,500 entrants.
