Cherries complete big-money deal for Ritchie (updated)
8:10pm Wednesday 30th January 2013 in Latest Sport
By Neil Perrett
CHERRIES have tonight completed the signing of Swindon Town’s jewel in the crown Matt Ritchie, the Daily Echo can exclusively reveal.
The 23-year-old winger finalised terms on a three-and-a-half year contract after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee of around £500,000.
Ritchie opened talks with Cherries after the Dorset outfit met Swindon’s valuation earlier today.
News of Cherries’ renewed interest in the former Portsmouth trainee was revealed on the Daily Echo’s Twitter feed this afternoon.
Initial reports suggested Cherries had tabled an offer in the region of £600,000, although the final figure is believed to be closer to £500,000.
The move sees Cherries successfully end their 14-month pursuit of the left-footed wide man.
Sought-after Ritchie was also understood to have been a target for a host of Championship clubs with Cherries fending off competition from the likes of Crystal Palace, Charlton, Bolton and Bristol City.
Ritchie has this season enhanced his growing reputation, his nine goals and nine assists helping the Robins force their way into the promotion picture.
The gifted Gosport-born ace also played a starring role last season and was named League Two’s player of the year as Swindon romped to the title.
Cherries had a bid of £500,000 turned down by Swindon during former boss Lee Bradbury’s time at the helm in December 2011.
And they have since been linked with several swoops for the pint-sized winger, who trained with Cherries in 2008 when Kevin Bond was in charge.
Current Cherries boss Eddie Howe, who worked alongside Bond, is a Ritchie admirer and could see him as the final piece of the jigsaw as the club bids to win promotion this season.
Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio last week said the Wiltshire outfit had not received any offers for Ritchie and was adamant the player was not for sale.
Ritchie had 18 months to run on his existing contract with the Robins and Di Canio claimed the club had rejected an offer of £900,000 for his services in the summer.
However, the landscape has since altered with Swindon having recently appointed advisors to restructure their finances – with debts thought to be around £13million.
It is believed the addition of Ritchie will not be the end of Cherries’ activity before the transfer window closes at 11pm tomorrow night.
And while the club could be looking to further bolster its squad for a promotion push over the closing months of the season, departures could also be expected.
Striker Wes Thomas, the subject of intense transfer speculation for the past couple of months, and midfielder Lorenzo Davids could be on the move.

This so say transfer has, I believe, has been drummed up either in the hope the deal doesn't go through or the hope the new board don't want promotion and sell all the family jewels. Probably the ol Twitter strikes again - can be the source of many a false rumour.
Still - time will tell.

I guess none of us is privy to what Eddie Howe has in mind but I hope Pugh is staying with us because to replace him at this crucial time of the season could be dangerous least of all because he and Daniels have developed a very good partnership (I know Daniels is injured but I hope he will soon be back)

Needs to be near to 2m as lets face it you paid 800k for Tubbs who is no where near the quality of Ritchie.

Its been a busy day at County Ground and this is just a distraction. If Howe was megga serious about securing Ritchies services he would have had things well wrapped up by now. If he has the money made available to him then why not bid in plenty of time instead of waiting until the last minute. With other clubs from the CCC lining up for Ritchie why would he go to another L1 club instead of an established Championship side. Neither Swindon or Bournemouth have a written guarantee of promotion, but the deciding factor is, he likes, no loves playing for the manager he has now, and that is the difference. Neil Perrett is just stirring the mire, yet another cheap shot journo working for yet another provincial rag.

Good player, but not worth that kind of money. Here we go again by putting ourselves further into financial trouble in my view.

Has anybody considered that maybe Pugh could be on his way and that somebody has bid for him and Ed is looking to replace him with Ritchie ???

Your all getting confident so lets see how we are at the end of the season.
Failure could be costly for you.
Your crowds need to increase otherwise as i said before your Russian Mafia benefactor could get fed up as our owner did and that is the only reason you got Ritchie as he didnt want to put more money into the club.
Yes your all **** a hoop at the moment but as they say what goes around comes around!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have had our debts written off, so in effect we got £13.5 million for Ritchie.
Every club will want to beat you lot now, and we will sneak in 2nd place.
