Cherries: Zubar completes Bury loan move (updated)
6:50pm Thursday 24th January 2013 in Latest Sport
By Ian Wadley
BOSS Eddie Howe confirmed that the need to balance Cherries' squad numbers played a part in the decision to allow Stephane Zubar to join Bury on loan.
The defender this afternoon completed the move on a temporary deal until the end of the season.
Howe told the Daily Echo: “The thinking behind it is we need to address the balance in the squad.
“We brought in three players last week and, both from a squad management and financial point of view, these decisions must be made and we must balance it.
“From our perspective, we are a League One club and what we can't do is carry a squad that is too big in numbers.
“We have always said that we want a tight, lean squad and a manageable number because you can only pick 18.”
Zubar's exit came after Howe had drafted in Southampton loan man Dan Seaborne to boost his defensive resources, with winger Ryan Fraser and goalkeeper Ryan Allsop also signing.
Centre-half Zubar had seen his first-team opportunities limited after making just three appearances for Cherries this term.
Zubar, who agreed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Cherries in February, joined the Dorset club as a free agent in September 2011.
Having left Plymouth Argyle, the 26-year-old became a fans' favourite in his debut campaign at Dean Court as he made 25 appearances.
But a combination of injuries and Cherries' form under Howe saw Zubar fall down the pecking order.
Howe added: “He is going to a good club. Hopefully, he will do well, enjoy his loan spell and get what he wants out of it.”

Umm... I know we're cutting the squad and everything but defence is the one position we're low. Our fully fit, and available defenders list is Elphick and Seaborne. Francis + Daniels are struggling with injuries, and Cook is obviously not going to be around for a while. Seems a strange one.
I'd much rather be getting rid of the Dutch duo who are likely to be on high wages. (That doesn't mean loaning them to Aldershot and still playing full wages)

Thanks to dumb and dumber and our highly experienced director of (Playstation) football, we have been lumbered with two players who are not up to the job and should never have been signed in the first place. Such incompetence is the reason Maxim Demin stepped in and changed things before his investment became worthless.

Must be some big personality issue with Zubar for someone of his class to have been given the cold shoulder. I suppose Matty Tubbs will be the next one to be leant out. Seems so unfair given the chances that Addison, Thomas and Pitman are given. Disappointing, but trust that Eddie and Jason know what the are doing.

I've always championed Zubar and I'm not going to stop now. He's our quickest centre back, a good tackler, the equal of any of them in the air and his positional play has never exactly been poor. I've not seen him have a bad game and he is a much better player than Addison.
In my opinion, Eddie has made an error and AFCB's loss is Bury's gain.
This boy Seabourne must be some player!!
I'm sure the footballing sages on this forum will say "What do you know compared with Eddie you ####, or something similar, but I just don't understand it.

Bradbury always preferred Barrett (when fit) with Cook and then brought in Addison on loan.
Groves signed Addison up along with Elphick and paired those two with Cook as next in line; and now Eddie clearly also has Zubar at the back of the queue in that quartet, even further proven now that Seaborne has arrived.
Given that Zubar was pretty much universally popular with the fans (and rightly so) and seemingly was pretty much always fit and available, what other explanation can there be?
Also, Eddie's hope that he (Zubar) gets what he wants out of this move hardly sounds like any sort of ringing endorsement of a player that he'd like to return, sounding instead like it roughly translates as "hopefully he'll play well enough to earn a move in the summer so we can cash in".
Shame, as on the face of it he should have become established as a first choice centre back but I suspect this is the last we'll see of him.

Strawbs_78 wrote:Yep, definitely agree with that. Davids looked very good for the 50 minutes or so that he got against Orient and doesn't seem to have had a sniff since.
I can't believe the stick that davids and demouge get on here. They are easily good enough to be top players in this division. Last season they both played regular top flight football in germany and holland respectively, which to point out to people who think english football is the be all and end all, are both much higher standards than our lge 1. You clearly weren't at the leyton orient game when davids was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch after he came on! Give them a break!
I thought Demouge looked decent on his debut against Walsall, despite being thrown in when not fully fit, but he also is getting ignored.
I think it's a case of them having been signed by Groves and most people are happy to bash them for that reason, completely disregarding the twin factors that - as mentioned - they're established top flight players abroad, and also, neither have been given a proper run in the team.
Hardly fair to dismiss them as poor signings on that basis!

.
That said I think we are all mystified. I don't know about personalities but it would seem Eddie just doesn't rate Zubar. If he did he would use him. I think Eddie would work on a personality issue. He is obviously a good man manager. But then as has been said, none of the managers have used Zubar as first choice.
.
As for the Dutch players, are they properly fit yet ? I don't think they fit in with Eddies plans. Totally agree they should never have been signed. But as with the other dross, you can't get rid of them while they are in contract if no-one else wants them.

Cherries: (from) Jalal, Francis, Seaborne, Elphick, Daniels, Fogden, Hughes, McQuoid, Arter, O'Kane, Pugh, Grabban, Tubbs, Pitman, Fletcher, McDermott, Partington, Cook, Allsop, James.
oh 4 defenders no more, rest injured or on loan lets not hope that Crewe dont nobble a defender in the first 10 minutes. and we have to put midfielders in defence as they are must be better than important squad members that are all put out on loan
