Cherries: Unbeaten run bites the dust as Walsall claim victory
5:05pm Saturday 19th January 2013 in Latest Sport
By Neil Perrett
CHERRIES’ 15-match unbeaten run in League One came to an end today as Walsall registered a deserved victory at the Banks’s Stadium.
Eddie Howe’s men were up against it at the break after Sam Mantom’s goal and a Will Grigg penalty had put the Saddlers 2-0 ahead.
And although Brett Pitman netted to make it 2-1 four minutes into the second half and Febian Brandy was sent off for Walsall, another Grigg penalty sealed victory for the hosts.
Brandy and Jamie Paterson both saw early chances fail to trouble David James before a goalbound effort from Pitman was charged down by a defender.
Skipper Elphick saved the day when he blocked Grigg’s shot towards an unguarded net after James had spilled a cross from Mantom.
However, the reprieve was short lived as Walsall opened the scoring when Mantom’s centre from the right sailed across the face of the goalmouth before nestling in the bottom corner.
Cherries went close to levelling when Pitman’s header from a Josh McQuoid cross came back off the crossbar with Saddlers goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin beaten.
Walsall doubled their lead when Grigg, felled by James for the penalty, drilled his spot kick straight down the middle on the stroke of half-time.
Pitman threw Cherries a lifeline when he headed home a Grabban cross to halve the deficit four minutes into the second half.
Paterson’s strike was touched on to the post by James before a header from Wes Thomas from close range bounced off the underside of the crossbar and landed in McLoughlin’s hands.
Brandy received his marching orders for picking up a second yellow card for a lunge on Eunan O’Kane as the pair challenged for the loose ball on the goalline after James had parried Malvind Benning’s free-kick.
Substitute Matt Tubbs fluffed his lines from six yards when he put the ball over the crossbar before McQuoid drilled a shot straight down McLoughlin’s throat.
Grigg converted a second penalty after O’Kane had inadvertently picked up the ball in the 18-yard area, thinking referee Andy Davies had penalised Cherries for an earlier foul.
Cherries: James, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Daniels, Fogden (Fletcher, 81), Arter (McQuoid, 36), O’Kane, Grabban, Pitman, Thomas (Tubbs, 74).
Unused subs: Seaborne, McDermott, Partington, Jalal (g/k).
Booked: James, McQuoid.
Saddlers: McLoughlin, Purkiss, Butler, Downing, Benning, Baxendale (J Chambers, 86), A Chambers, Mantom, Paterson, Grigg, Brandy.
Unused subs: Holden, Featherstone, Hemmings, Bowerman, Taylor, Grof (g/k).
Booked: Purkiss, Brandy, Baxendale.
Sent off: Brandy.
Attendance: 3,173 (including 317 visiting supporters).
Referee: Andy Davies (Portsmouth).

No creativity, poor finishing (Wes Tho-miss missing another open goal!) and dodgy defending did for us against a Walsall team who've been on a good run of late. We desperately missed Marc Pugh today and once Arter had come off we were clearly second best in midfield. And what was Fogden thinking picking the ball up in the area?
Results around us didn't go our way either with the top two way ahead even with our couple of games in hand. The play off places are our only realistic aim now..... but not if we play like we did today. All i all a bad day at the office. Let's hope the Hartlepool game is on Tuesday and we can bounce back with three points.

Without question the poorest performance since Eddie Howe came back. Groves didn't given the team talk did he?

Desperately need a tough target man - to rough up the opposition - we may have some good players but they are too lightweight when the going gets tough in the opponents box
3 points at bottom club H'pool is vital to recover from this forgettable effort

We will need to start converting these efforts that are hitting the woodwork. The last thing we need right now is a long trip to Hartlepool on tuesday. Need to get back to winning ways asap. KEEP THE FAITH.!!!!!!!

We didn't have much luck with our efforts today, but of course it doesn't help to give away two penalties.
We should accept that we have had a wonderful run of results to put us in a position that we could not dream of in the early part of the season. No reason for the players or supporters to be downhearted. The team has earned it's reputation and the opposition will be delighted to beat them. That's football.
Congratulations to the gallant 371 supporters who made the trip in such weather conditions.

Given the chances we create we shoud have really trounced someone this season which hasn't really happened. I would also like to see Donal given some game-time, with Pughie out today I would have thought it was a good time for hime to come into the starting line-up. But hey never mind congratulations to Eddie, Jason and team for the unbeaten run, chin up, lick wounds and we go again on Tuesday or Saturday. UTC!
Woeful defending at times today but I am more worried about upfront at the moment . We got back to 1:2 and up against ten men so felt a point was there did the taking. Hope Tuesday is off so team can rest up.

Well done AFCB a good run comes to an end. So lets dust ourselves off focus and get back to winning ways. Looking foward to seeing the new boys. Wes still cant hit a barn door has he thought of going to an optician, putting his boots on the wrong feet or getting a guide dog?. Perhaps the FA would allow us to put a bell in the ball for Wes. Funny how the whole team dynamics change when Wes is about. Get rid sooon!!

All the posters singling out Thomas need to have a reality check. Pitman and Grabbon were totally ineffective for most of the game and both wasted fantastic chances to score. Tubbs came on and immediately missed a clear chance from six yards.
Thomas was well marked, had little support, and the one chance he had hit the underside of the bar.
O'Kane picking the ball up sort of summed up the day, untill their Number nine nutmegged Cook who immediately dived head first in to two foot of snow. That did sum the day up.

That sums his enthusiasm up and his selfish behaviour is letting the team down now.

Disappointing since this was the only game I've got to this season. The team looked very jaded, short on inspiration and variety in attack and were too easily opened up by some small but quick-footed Walsall attackers. Their central defender Buttler didn't give Thomas a look in, whilst our others front men looked short of ideas. The second penalty was a disaster, since we were getting back in the game. one of the Bournemouth defenders tackled just outside the left edge of the box and Walsall appealed loudly for a free-kick; With everyone looking at the referee and play more or less stopped, Eunan O'Kane thought that the referee had blown for a foul and gathered the ball to take it to the spot outside the penalty area where the foul occurred; in fact the referee.had waved play on and there was O'Kane with the ball in his arms goalkeeper style inside the penalty area when the linesman flagged for handball and the penalty was awarded. For the second time James, who had made a number of mistakes failed to save and that knocked the stuffing out of the team just when it looked as though we might get back on level terms.

Yes Grabban has scored many goals, but has looked average recently and before Howe returned, was it just a purple patch?
Pitman seems to score a fair number of goals but I do question if his presence in the team hampers the flow of the team. At home games especially, we don't have the attacking threat we did before Christmas.
Thomas doesn't seem interested and should be sold in my opinion. He isn't good enough to warrant the impact he has had on this team.
Tubbs is fine as a sub, but we could certainly do without him.
Although we've got good draws against Brentford and Swindon (and Wigan), with the deficit Groves gave us, we need to knick wins wherever possible, and we need the best possible strikers to do this.
Overall, I think our strikeforce is good, but the rest of our team is great.

Thomas and Grabban missed absolute sitters and James, for the umpteenth time in his career, failed to engage his brain. God knows what O'Kane was thinking.
I know these were bare-bones highlights and from what I can gather from those who went, we were poor generally but it seems like we threw that game away.

Having been used to a bare bones sqaud in previous seasons, a swollen squad can also present its problems. So many choices, so many combinations, difficult to know right now what is the best option up front. Midfield and defence slightly more straighforward right now, however with the signing of Allsop the goalkeeping spot will be interesting.
The Tubbs transfer fee still wrankles with me a bit, seeing as how in league terms, he has probably cost a grand a minute up to now. Would like him to get a run, just purely because his massive fee.
However in Eddie we have to trust. Can't wait to see Ryan Fraser and Francis in action down the right side. Hope he does't warm the bench for too long and the playing clearance comes through quickly.

FrankiesbackfromhollYou are never going to win any game if you give two soft penalties away. But we are missing key players in McDonald & Pugh and with Harry Arter limping off as well, were always up against it, will also be mising Cook from Monday as well. So the run is over and it's time to start another one. The Hartlepool game is unlikely to be played on Tuesday, the weather forecast is for sub zero temperatures there, so time to recover. As for Demouge and Davids, they are under contract and no one appears to be interested in signing them, Eddie clearly believes that he has better options and I for one wouldn't question his judgement. I would agree that this is a Season of change and would expect a lot of changes in the Squad for next Season, 7/8 out and 3/4 new players coming in..

So yep forget yesterday we were not at the races against a side who have won 6 out of 7 themselves, certainly isn't the time to panic buy, if we make the play offs it's a bonus this season!!I'm not saying wholesale changes Frankie but, as another post has said, most of our goals come from midfield and I've lost count of the number of crosses that find defenders' heads or feet. Regarding Thomas, he will need time to settle back in. He's been away so long that he's almost a new signing. If EH and Thomas himself are looking for him to stay, he must be given time although, as I have said, a taller stronger striker is needed IMHO.

Unbelievable for the ref not to have given Walsall a free kick.
