Cherries: Championship bidding war looming over Thomas (with video)
10:47am Thursday 10th January 2013 in Latest Sport
By Neil Perrett
UNSETTLED Cherries striker Wes Thomas could spark a bidding war after being linked with a host of Championship clubs.
Thomas this week resumed training with Eddie Howe's squad after returning from a fruitful loan spell at Blackpool where he netted three times in nine appearances.
Although the Tangerines had been favourites to sign him permanently, a request last week to renew his loan agreement at Bloomfield Road was rejected by Cherries.
And sources close to the Daily Echo suggest several Championship clubs have been monitoring the situation and could be planning to join the race for Thomas during the current transfer window.
Howe's former club Burnley are rumoured to be among them, while Birmingham and Huddersfield are also understood to be interested.
Cherries' League One promotion rivals Sheffield United are also believed to be keeping tabs on Thomas, while Sky Sports yesterday linked him with Championship pair Derby and Watford.
Speaking to the Daily Echo last night, Cherries boss Howe said there had been no change regarding Thomas's situation and confirmed Blackpool's loan request remained the only inquiry on the table.
Howe reluctantly gave Thomas permission to join Blackpool at the end of November after the east Londoner had made it clear he wanted to go.
Thomas, who has 18 months to run on his existing contract with Cherries, reunited with Michael Appleton at Bloomfield Road after enjoying a successful loan spell under him at Portsmouth earlier this season.
Intriguingly, Blackpool's interest in Thomas appears to have cooled ever since reports earlier this week started linking Appleton with the vacant manager's position at Blackburn - with an official approach made yesterday.
Should Thomas be sold, Cherries would look to recoup a large chunk of the six-figure sum they paid to Crawley just 12 months ago, an undisclosed fee believed to have been in the region of £175,000.
Sky Sports yesterday reported they understood that Cherries were keen on signing Leyton Orient goalkeeper Ryan Allsop and had already “expressed an interest” in the player.
The article suggested a deal for the 20-year-old was “in the process of being discussed” and claimed Cherries would be keen to have an agreement in place this month.
Cherries currently have four goalkeepers in their first-team squad - David James, Shwan Jalal, Darryl Flahavan and Benjamin Buchel - with Jalal the only one under contract to the club into next season.
Meanwhile, Glenavon defender Mark Haughey, 21, has been training this week with Cherries' development squad and lined up in a 4-3 defeat against a Brentford XI on Tuesday.

I remember how great he was in the beginning and how poor he was at the end so no doubt he will be warming a bench in the championship soon

Hopefully a deal can be struck with Burnley, having Marvin Bartley come this way as part of the deal, if they want Thomas ! UTC

Personally I can't see why Championship clubs would want him when he's not even good enough to start in a League One side and misses twice as many chances as he takes.
I watched him playing for Blackpool in the televised game last month and he was truly awful and was subbed at half time.
Derby, Watford, Blackpool or Burnley are welcome to him if they can pay @£300k.

With Grabham ill, Wes could be playing on Saturday, there's no hurry to let him go and given the way he was treated by the "deadly dou" who can blame him for wanting away.

We should cash in while we have a chance. He clearly wants to leave. he is quoted as asking for a move, and this has never been denied by Wes. if he is unhappy it is very unlikely he will return to the form he had when he first arrived. We have achieved a lot while he has been gone so we can live without him. Holding onto him when he wants to leave will just make things worse. Not s sure about bringing Bartley back. Who would get dropped to make way for him?
Gives the ball away too much, poor marking and tackling.

mind games.Fully expect Wes Thomas
to be involved, either from start or from
bench Saturday and scoring.He has
always given his all when played, easy
to be critical but are the critics able to kick a ball properly themselves?!

We all have our own opinions on players but I just can't get my head around any negativity on Harry.

abc100 wrote:Totally agree. As I said in a later post the Arter McDonald partnership worked really well. They made a formidable pairing. I am sure they will do so again when Sean is fit again. That is providing he can push Hughes out, who has also been in great form. People keep going on about Bartley but I can't see what he would bring that we don't already have??? I like the guy but that is no reason to bring him back. Does he have something we are missing? If there is a footballing reason for his return then I have complete faith that EH will have identified it and will act accordingly, but I doubt it would be because of the way the current players are performing.

With Appleton likely to be appointed Blackburn's Manager today, Wes could have another suitor. Have a sneaking frrling that Wes might well be playing tomorrow, should Grabham not recover in time.
