Sutton Olympic torch celebrations announced
1:36pm Wednesday 20th June 2012 in London Olympics 2012 - Latest News
The Olympic Torch is coming to Sutton on July 23
Details of celebrations to mark the arrival of the Olympic torch in Sutton have been unveiled.
The iconic torch will arrive on Monday, July 23, during the last few days of its journey to the Olympic Stadium, ahead of the start of the Games on July 27.
To celebrate the special occasion, a day of festivities is planned, focussing on Carshalton and Sutton town centre.
The torch will enter the borough, from Croydon, at around 1.50pm, before travelling through Wallington.
It will reach Carshalton at around 2pm, and local bands will play on a stage in Carshalton Ponds from 1 to 7pm.
The Memorial Gardens will play host to stalls and entertainment from 1 to 3pm and the newly reopened Honeywood Museum will open from 1 to 5pm, with Olympic-themed crafts on offer, including the chance to make your own torch, laurel wreath and medal.
The torch will head towards Sutton via Carshalton Road, and will reach the High Street at about 2.30pm.
It is hoped residents will line the streets to watch the torch pass through the centre of Sutton, and enjoy a day of events commissioned by the London 2012 Festival. Family entertainment planned includes street theatre, circus acts and music, from 12pm.
Sutton Life Centre will be hosting a summer sports and fun party from 11am to 4pm, to coincide with the torch passing the centre at 3pm.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairman of the environment and neighbourhood committee at Sutton Council, said: "This is a once in a life time event, so I hope as many residents as possible will join us in taking to the streets to celebrate and watch the torch pass through our borough.
"This has been a real community effort, with countless groups coming together to put on a day that Sutton will not forget."

Well that covers the law, the hospital staff and the fire brigade you mention. we seem to be getting there to the place you describe unfortunately. I'm planning fun in the form of a run out on the Shoprider to seek out an Olympic Free Zone in the Borough.
Oh LiberalsOut, change the record! Or would your prefer a lawless society, no hospital staff, no fire brigade etc etc. Dont forget public sector workers also pay taxes and contribute to their own wages through council tax.
