Cherries: Tubbs has confidence in strike partnership

MATT Tubbs immediately forged a winning partnership with Wes Thomas and then warned Cherries’ League One rivals: Things can only get better.

Cherries boss Lee Bradbury is understood to have spent approaching £1million to bring the attacking duo to Seward Stadium from Crawley Town during the January transfer window.

Tubbs and Thomas suggested that could prove a good investment as they combined to help Cherries record a 2-0 home win over Exeter City on Tuesday night.

Debutant Tubbs marked his first appearance since joining the Dorset outfit by getting a goal and an assist during a lively second-half display.

And the 27-year-old is hopeful that his link-up with Thomas can develop into a strong alliance during the club’s play-off push.

Tubbs told the Daily Echo: “Wes is a friend of mine. I got on well with him when we were at Crawley and I am getting on well with him now.

“All good strike partnerships get on well off and on the pitch. In the past, all my strike partners have been very close to me and very good friends.

“Wes is a top lad and, hopefully, this partnership can go a long way.

“Wes is an intelligent player and with players like Wes to play alongside, it makes my job easy because we just bounce off each other.

“We have not really played together for that long. We had a brief spell together at Crawley and I have only been here for a week or so now.

“Things are looking good so far so they can only get better.”

Discussing his new-look frontline, Bradbury said: “They seemed to get a better understanding the longer the game went on.

“In the last half an hour of the game, they linked up together quite well a couple of times around the edge of the penalty box. They created some chances for each other.

“I think they will be a real handful together.”

Tubbs’s close-range finish was his 19th goal of the season and the first since he joined Cherries for the fourth time in his career.

The Verwood-raised frontman said: “It was good to get the goal in front of the Steve Fletcher Stand.

“I used to come here and watch as a kid and it was good to see the big names scoring goals. For me to get a goal as well was great.”

Speaking to the media following the Exeter clash, Tubbs added: “It is my home-town club and I supported the team as a boy.

“I had a couple of stints here before and they didn’t work out.

“Hopefully, with this one, I will be here for a while.”

The partnership showed signs of working well on Tuesday night, great goal from Matt, and Wes would have scored but was unlucky that his marker was a very able defender. Its all good for AFCB.

Wes and Matt have great potential and I know they will both continue to score goals and push us towards the play offs! I wish the echo would stop refering to have much they cost, this is irrelevant now, all that matters now is their ability to play well together and score goals! Very exciting time to be an AFCB supporter!

In my 20 years of watching Bournemouth we've had some great strikers, but not often enough - Stein, Defoe, Steve Jones. This is the first time we've had 2 goalscorers upfront in the last 20 years, I know its only 1 game in, but we really look solid at the back and a deadly up front

I think it's very relevant.
.
We have been told that
(a) Mr Demin hasn't actually put cash into the club
(b) The previous player sales were necessary to keep the club going
(c) The current spending spree has been financed from previous player sales
.
Clearly not all of these statements can be true, so I would say it is a very worrying time to be an AFCB supporter. Some of us can remember being here before.
.
As to the cash spent on Thomas and Tubbs, that comes to well over £1M surely.
.
I am sure the happy brigade will be putting me right, but the information coming out of Dean Court doesn't really add up for me.

What i meant by its not relevant any more is that the mone has been spent and we have the players in. Both in good scoring form and Matt Tubbs isnt just a 4th division player, he was the best striker in that league. Alot of players have gone to teams from a couple of divisions lower and done amazing jobs! Ian wright, Chris Smalling, John Barnes to name a couple. Not sure how it is a very worrying time to be an afcb supporter, yes we needed to sell players in the summer but we are at a completely new stage now with more stability. We are the most stable we have been in years and we have an exciting young squad therefore it is an exciting time to be an afcb supporter!

Tubbs didn't do that much. I thought it was a case of him trying too hard & not just relaxing in to the role. Scott was the difference. He has to start with Donal, probably at the expense of Gregory. Harry is probably worrying now about how he'll get back in.

Great for LB to have this kinda worry I suppose.

I'd hate to live in your world. Live life a bit, enjoy it. I was here when we were putting money in buckets, at Bristol City when we thought it was our last game and i'll do it all again if needs be. That's football and what being a supporter is all about, we are there with the club through good times and bad. At AFCB we don't get too many good years so just enjoy. I am reliably informed that all Demin has done is underwritten and guarenteed the players contracts to their end. So stop worrying, live in the now.

@afcbtintin - If Tubbs does little each week but then scores 1 goal every match, thats fines by me!!!

Tubbs and Thomas will inherit the Earth and, forsooth, shall propel the cherries to play off victory.

In addition, a series of devastating earthquakes will strike Milton Keynes during April.

Yes I remember the passing of the buckets, several financial crises, one receivership, one administration, season long tranfer embargos, and THE LOSS OF THE GROUND.
.
All because the club could not live within its means. I don't want those times to return thank you very much.
.
At the end of the day, a club has to live on the cash it can generate internally. Crewe Alexandra had good times. They went up to league 1, then up to the championship, stayed awhile and enjoyed their time. But they lived within their means and inevitably have dropped back to league 2. And No one has ever called for Dario Gradi's head, they just accept that is their club's natural level.
.
Other clubs, Exeter, Rochdale, Morecambe, etc live within their means. We just have to learn to do the same.

I do think we are banking on getting to the Championship within the next two seasons.I am slightly worried about what will happen if we dont.

I remember the Harry years.Yes we were successful, but it also killed us financially. The year we reached the 2nd Div, I recall that Harry was the best paid manager outside the top tier & the team were all on top whack wages. We never got the gates to support the high outgoings. If we do make the Championship, I really do think that once again the level of support will be a problem.
Even now I think our gates are quite poor.
However I think we should try & enjoy whats happening. In the end surely the point of having a leaugue team, is for them to have success? Sometimes from what I read on here, it seems certain fans seem to expect us to struggle & only that!
Its OK to be cautious but its not OK to be so negative. Some people are never happy! Lighten up FFS! UTCIAD

I think it likely that Mitchell and Demin's aim is to complete all the renovations around the ground, build the training facilities, buy the ground back, build the fourth stand, see the club established in the Championship and then sell up for a big profit.

I agree with what your point, but that's mainly because Fletch hasn't scored that many goals ven though he's been vital over the years - when he first arrived and played alongside Steve Cotterill (which was developing into a fantastic partnership) we could see what his job. If Wes does a similar thing and scores twice what Fletch did then I agree, we could be deadly. Time will tell
