Cherries: Malone provides twist for Tubbs to shine

GOAL GLEE: Matt Tubbs celebrates GOAL GLEE: Matt Tubbs celebrates

Cherries marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens by living up to the great expectations of their supporters – thanks largely to a great Scott.

The introduction of Scott Malone as a 68th-minute substitute ensured this contest would be a tale of two halves, the returning midfielder playing a starring role in the victory.

An uneventful opening 45 minutes were quickly forgotten as the sparky Midlander put a two-month injury nightmare behind him to dramatically alter the course of the game.

Until his arrival, Cherries’ attempts to edge closer to the League One play-off places had seemed destined to be thwarted by their stubborn opponents from Devon.

However, just 10 minutes after replacing Donal McDermott, Malone had scored one and been the architect of a goal for Matt Tubbs, his match-winning cameo taking Cherries to eighth in the table.

Malone’s industry set up the opener for Tubbs, the striker bagging his 19th goal of the season – and his first for Cherries since his big-money transfer from Crawley. It was also the first goal of his career in the third flight.

Tubbs then repeated the favour, the 27-year-old providing the assist for Malone to seal victory after Cherries had mounted a swift counter-attack, prompted by Malone, following an Exeter corner.

Just minutes before Malone came on to breathe life into proceedings, a stunning save from Cherries goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan had denied Richard Logan to prevent the Grecians going ahead.

On a bitterly cold night, chances were few and far between during a largely uninspiring first half, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested as defences dominated.

Daniel Nardiello should have done better after he had skipped past two defenders, the striker firing straight at Flahavan, who saved at the second attempt.

Shaun MacDonald took aim after Cherries had made their first foray into enemy territory in the ninth minute, the Welshman’s effort way off target.

Although Cherries showed plenty of attacking intent, with Marc Pugh and McDermott busy down the flanks, the final ball from the hosts lacked penetration.

Tubbs was beaten at the near post by Artur Krysiak, the Exeter goalkeeper racing off his line to clear after Charlie Daniels had helped on a clever pass from MacDonald.

McDermott let fly with a speculative left-foot drive, the Dubliner’s shot midway through the half landing near one of the diggers behind Krysiak’s goal.

The visitors’ defence came under heavy fire towards the end of the opening period, with Cherries fashioning no fewer than four shots in quick succession.

However, although the Grecians failed to clear Pugh’s corner, they did manage to block heroically from Tubbs, Daniels, McDermott and Steve Cook.

And as the first half drew to a close, Thomas raced down the right flank before whipping in a low centre, with the lively Tubbs only inches from converting.

The same combination went close to unlocking the Grecians defence early in the second half, with Thomas firing across the face of the goalmouth after Tubbs had dinked a Simon Francis pass into his path.

And from the resultant corner taken by Pugh, Thomas went even closer to drawing first blood, only to see his bullet header come crashing back off the crossbar.

Cherries’ encouraging start to the second period continued when Pugh rolled a free kick invitingly to Tubbs, the striker’s low effort flashing past the upright.

Although some Exeter supporters thought Troy Archbald-Henville had headed the visitors in front after 53 minutes, his effort was chalked off for a blatant check on Flahavan.

Cherries were then thankful to their goalkeeper and captain for a top-drawer save, Flahavan superbly clawing away Logan’s glancing header from a James Dunne cross.

Thomas was denied when Daniels’s through ball landed between the legs of Krysiak before Malone made a welcome return to action as a 68th-minute replacement for McDermott.

Archbald-Henville’s timely challenge stopped Thomas in his tracks following a neat one-two with Tubbs before Cherries finally made the breakthrough 18 minutes from time.

The goal, despatched confidently by Tubbs at the far post, owed much to the tenacity of Malone, who started the move by battling hard to win possession around 30 yards from goal.

And after the former Wolves man had traded passes with Thomas, he picked out Tubbs with a low centre that the striker controlled before drilling into the back of the net from close range.

Malone again took centre stage as Cherries doubled their lead in stunning fashion in the 78th minute, the midfielder starting and finishing a sweeping move following an Exeter corner.

The 20-year-old collected the ball deep inside his own half and embarked on a marauding run before feeding Tubbs on the right wing.

Malone then made his way to the far post and applied a clinical finish into the roof of the net after Tubbs had found him with an inch-perfect cross.

Krysiak saved after Thomas had tested him with a 20-yarder before Tubbs received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Steve Fletcher a minute from time.

Cherries (4-4-2): Flahavan 8, Francis 7, Zubar 7.5, Cook 8, Daniels 7, Pugh 7, Gregory 6.5 (Purches, 89), MacDonald 7, McDermott 7 (Malone, 68), Tubbs 7.5 (Fletcher, 89), W Thomas 7.5.

Unused subs: Arter, D Thomas.

Grecians (5-3-2): Krysiak, Tully, Archbald-Henville, Duffy (O’Flynn, 73), Coles, Jones, Noble, Dunne, Bennett, Logan (Bauza, 66), Nardiello.

Unused subs: McNish, Taylor, Pidgeley (g/k).

Booked: Nardiello.

Referee: Oliver Langford (W Midlands).

Attendance: 5,497 (inc 299 away supporters).

A good overall performance by the team....starting cautiously getting to know the new players.
We dominated the game but the final ball was generally poorly delivered and with the visitors keeper commanding his area many good positions were wasted by poor crosses.
The introduction of Malone changed the game with his pace in getting past defenders and getting behind the bus that Exeter had parked.
2 well taken goals.....still feel we need more bite in midfield though.
Worth mentioning the Exeter supporters who never stopped singing all night and were generally good humoured (although, in truth, they had little to sing about) on an absolutely freezing night.

1st half Exeter were the better team, but the hard work and perseverance paid off.

Introduction of Malone with his fresh legs opened them up and from then on there was only going to be winner.

Well done to the team and the management.

The more I see of Malone, the more he impresses - last night we saw a game-changing cameo from a wonderfully gifted player who's going to be a fans' favourite for years, I hope. An inspired signing.

Malone changed the game when he came off the bench. Why no mark Neil? A cameo Man of the Match performance.

That is 4 home wins in a row now, which is obviously a major upturn in our home performances :)

I thought that defensively we were excellent last night and the Tubbs/Thomas combination looks very promising. It was great to have a player the calibre of Scott Malone to come off the bench to change the game:)

I feel that we need to get at least 7 points from the next 3 games, so that we have caught up on our play off rivals, going into a very difficult March.

Hartlepool (Away)
Leyton Orient (Home)
Rochdale (Away)

With regard to the games in March I am confident that we can do well. Lets face it, we beat Huddersfield on their patch and we have since improved the squad!!

First of all I hope everyone has the feeling in their toes back after how cold it was last night! I'll get my moan out of the way first... The atmosphere was poor last night! I went to the game with my two boys and we have never heard it so quiet, I thought the new signings would have made the atmosphere better or even made us shout a little bit!!!! Any who moan out of the way I thought we did well last night especially as they had 10 men behind the ball, the game changer was Malone tho who was extraordinary when he came on!!! He brought the came to life and I'm pretty sure after both goals I saw some lads doing the poznac in the east stand!!!! Anyway Malone was motm by far and I don't think I'm Malone on that thought! Malone was the difference - still think that we need a ball winner in midfield though, but it's still work in progress and the new players will take time to GEL - on another note - great goal by Liam Feeney last night!

CherryHammer says...
8:57am Wed 8 Feb 12

Malone definitely made the difference last night. As soon as he came on he was straight in to it and winning balls that our middle had previously been losing and both goals were down to his hard work. He looks like he has been hitting the weights while he has been out as well and looked much stronger than previously. Solid defence, great attacking options just missing a bit in midfield but all in all a good deserved win.

I also thought that Gregory and McDonald were a bit lightweight on midfield and lost a lot of tackles. Perhaps we should drop Gregory and put McDermott in his place?

Malone - Left Midfield
McDonald - Centre Midfield
McDermott - Centre Midfield
Pugh - Right Midfield

or perhaps put Malone in the middle?

Pugh - Left Midfield
McDonald - Centre Midfield
Malone - Centre Midfield
McDermott - Right Midfield

Why 45 minutes?? So if a player comes on in the 50th minute and scores a hat-trick, it's tough then? Even though he's the best player and changes the match? I think you need a bit of a re-think. Remember James Hayter's record-making hat-trick - 80th minute sub - he was my MOM that night!!

Was very impressed last night with the teams performance. Thought we were very patient and waited for our chances to come once the exeter defence started to tire. Turn points in the game have to be the Flahavan save which was brilliant and of course Malone coming off the bench. Think the fans need to be a little more patient with the players though because we were playing some excellent stuff last night and it just took a little bit of time for the team to gel.

Support wise i thought the atmosphere was ok. Would like more fans to get involved with the songs though. Think some new songs our needed though as the not stop chanting of zubar can be over kill. Lets get the atmosphere rocking next tuesday for our game against Orient!

Afcbpete says...
11:18am Wed 8 Feb 12

I too was in that row, have to say I've found the chants incredibly boring for quite sometime. I can understand the fact it's seating fans are split up which is not helpful, but we used to have some really good songs, it's one thing that's very noticable watching videos of say the "Arry" era.
As for the game, a real transformation and one that will only get better I'm sure, as players gel. Tubbs and Thomas are going to be a REAL handful. McDermott showed why the fans thought so highly of him last season, in fact I felt no one put in a bad performance. Often in the past, you would come away feeling there were 2 or 3 players who just were not up to the task, not now. Malone HAS to play and as already said Pugh, McDonald, Malone, McDermott surely pic themselves, with the knowledge that we have a cracking bench. anyone THINKING about going, well DO IT, based on last night you won't come away disappointed... OH, and Zubar MUST be put on a long contract... UTCIAD

New songs i believe are definetly needed at the home games maybe then alot more people would join in.

I think Steve Cook deserves his own song the guy has been quality for us, but we only seem to chant Zubar throughout games.

Maybe a song for Francis or Daniels could also be introduced at games coming up.

Another idea could be to have a section within the programme which would include Fans Chants at games, so then new support to games and everybody else gets to know the songs. Hopefully this would get the east stand and the family stand involved in the atmosphere more!

I find some of the comments about the "new players" needing time to gel a bit strange. Most of the recent signings have been with us on loan, some from almost the start of the season. The two new one, Tubbs and McDermot have both been here before and so know the club quite well. Tubbs and Thomas must have trained together at Crawley so they should be able to "gel" very quickly and McDermot is a good enough player to fit to any formation especially as a wide player on either side, left or right. Thought it was a very good match last night and the two players that people on here have been against in the past, Flahaven and Grgory both had very solid games.

He has been found not guilty by the jury so he is innocent. Fair enough. However, the HMRC must have had sufficient evidence to bring this case so you cannot make someone resign because he is diligent at his job. I think anyone would be suspicious by discovering someone has opened an account with the name of his dog and his age and deposit a large sum of money and then forget to declare albeit innocently even to his accountant. I know i would be. To be fair everything in football stinks these days with obscene wages and back-handers and people wonder why clubs are in financial difficulty!

I was row l in the north stand and it was the quietest I've heard us in years we were out sung by 3 or 400 inbreads
They only seemed to have one very dreary song though.
I was sat in the East stand between the North stand and the away supporters and in the main the only singing and noise was coming from the Exeter fans who made frequent comments about the library-like atmosphere in the ground. They never stopped singing for the whole 90 minutes.....and i can tell you that their songs were quite humerous including pretending they had scored a couple of times....guess they have to pretend fairly often??!!

I'd guess this is another illiterate scummer that seems to have failed to realise they had a crowd of under 9,000 yesterday - even though so many of their fans claimed they'd average 30,000 this season. Congratulations to Liam Feeney, finally getting the reward that unluckily hitting the woodwork should have brought last season.

To be fair to them, their gates will hardly ever reach the level they reached when we played there :)

Absolutely the right decision. what a complete waste of tax payers money!!!
Fantastic news, I never doubted he was innocent. Next England manager. Bournemouth's finest.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, but it would appear that ignorance of riting, reading and rithmetic are.The latter may not be qualities needed to be the next England manager, but they certainly help if you are to be an honest taxpayer. 'Arry rules...K.O....you no wot I meen, 'Arry?!
Your ignorance of spelling is shocking. What ignorance of the law? Can you explain? They only knew of the account in the first place because Harry told them upfront, nothing to hide! If he did, he would have kept his trap shut, which I bet he wishes he had!!
I think you will find he was having a bit of fun at 'Arrys expence!!
I write like a 2 year old and i carnt spell. I have never filled out a expence clame in my life
i am just compleating my Aplicasion Form to replace Crapello as England manager.
May the best man win, 'Arry.

I think all the credit here should go to Capello...At least he has proved himself to be a man and stand for what he believes in...A football manager is actually " the manager or selector of the team he presides over. When that is questioned or someone else takes control of the selection process, then its time 2 go"...Also as "Harry" would be the first 2 agree u are innocenent in this country until proven otherwise...So who or what has the right to punish John Terry until the outcome of whatever is decided...

Who has the right to be treated differently, just because he plays for England? IE Why has Terrys case not been dealt with sooner? It seems the powers that be thought it fine to deal with it after the Euros.

As for Crapello.I think he was just waiting for an excuse to leave.Overpaid & overated.Miserable C77T!
Think its the best thing that couldve happened for England.Lets get a decent Englishman in (Harry Boy). God works in mysterious ways!

Chri Huhne the politician hasn't been found guilty of anything at the moment, but has resigned his Cabinet post having been charged. What's the difference? How can we have an England captain on a racism charge after how we kick-up when English clubs players are abused etc abroad? Terry should have stood down himself until after the trial, if Capello was better at his man-management he would have agreed a deal - get cleared of the charge and be re-instated, any other captain would be told it's for the Euros only until after Terry's trial. It's a fair bet that's the deal Huhne has got with Cameron and Clegg - if found innocent, brought back at next re-shuffle.

i seem 2 recall a small matter of 100k given 2 someone as a gesture for the loyalty shown at a football club !!!(as he was taking a break from football)!!!But a very short time later took the managers job at his home club!!!In the process his best mate got the sack from the same club!!!......Definat
ely not illegal but the question of morals and ethics is some times as important as anything in life.....So..to suddenly treat the above mentioned as a saint who can make a very poor England team compete with a team like Spain and many others...Just as well give it back to Brollyman.
