Cherries: Symes unlikely to exercise option in contract

BOSS Lee Bradbury has revealed striker Michael Symes decided against exercising a 12-month option in his contract with Cherries.

Bradbury last week gave Symes the green light to join League One strugglers Rochdale, on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Out of contract in the summer, Symes will be entitled to leave Seward Stadium on a free transfer – unless he agrees a new deal in the meantime.

Symes, who turned down the offer of a three-year deal with Cherries earlier this season, requested the loan move due to a lack of game-time.

The 28-year-old is understood to have chosen not to trigger the one-year option as it could have left him in the same position next season.

Option clauses generally make provision either for a player to discuss fresh personal terms or will include a pre-determined salary package for the extension.

Bradbury told the Daily Echo: “His loan agreement with Rochdale runs until May 5 and his contract with us expires on June 30. We will keep tabs on how he does and monitor the situation.”

Symes, who penned a two-year deal when he joined Cherries from Accrington, has played second fiddle to Wes Thomas for much of this season, while the signing of Matt Tubbs pushed him further down the pecking order.

Should he deliver the goods for his former Stanley boss John Coleman who took over last month at Spotland, Symes could be offered terms by Dale.

“That is the gamble,” added Bradbury. “I didn’t want to commit to giving him a new contract just yet.

“I don’t think I have seen enough of him this season and I haven’t seen the best of him. He wanted to play games and it was his decision to go on loan and I can understand that.

“He had a clause in his contract he could have activated but he hasn’t. We are not really in the driving seat with it but I have brought in new strikers so that has pushed him down the pecking order.

“He has seen that and wants to play games.”

Symes will be hoping to make his delayed debut for Dale when they host Notts County on Saturday, although he will be ineligible to face Cherries when they travel to Spotland later this month.

I have mixed feelings on this.
.
I am a big Symes fan. He has been starting games for some time and was a much better partner for Thomas than Tubbs IMO, and I have already made plain my view on the Tubbs transfer. LB has virtually said 'I'm bringing in Tubbs and you are out, so hardly surprising that he has gone.
.
IMO, LB should have gone out to get a genuine ball winner and then gone back to 4-4-2 with Symes and Thomas up front.
.
That said, you only have to look at Symes' record to see he is injury prone, and to be honest that has been our experience with him. About the only season he has had without injury has been the one with John Coleman at Accrington before he joined us.
.
With his injury record, if we offerred him a 3 year deal at 28 years old, he should have bitten our hand off. And I expect he would have done but for the agent in the background. These parasytes are the bain of our lives.

Michael never really got going here which is a shame. He's clearly a very good player but you could see his heart went out of the club when Eddie Howe left. His performances since then, when fit, were often below what we know he is capable of.
I fully expect him to sign permanently with Rochdale on July 1st after rediscovering his form in the next couple of months with them.

Yes, I think our loss will be Rochdale's gain.
Such a pity, Symes has so much potential.

Cant believe what i read, Symes is crap. He lacks a couple of major things, desire and effort. He was in a priveledged position that all of would give our right arm for and he didnt try hard enough, move on and good luck.

I loved symes when he first joined put the last year has looked nothing more than a average league two striker and I believe we should be giving young Jayden stockley more of a run out! Your only as good as your strikers and with tubbs and Thomas we have two of the best in the league IMO ( pardon the pun )

Totally agree.
Thomas and Tubbs I hope will be an excellent partnership and with the ever agressive Jayden as the third bigger striker, if he takes this opportunity, then all looks good for the remainder of the season...roll on Saturday!

Like you Jontee I am a Symes fan.
I am also an admirer of Matt Tubbs, but this is what was said by an Exeter City official the other day:
"We have average gates of 4000 and have to sell players to survive financially in League one. We would not contemplate paying £80,000, let alone £800,000, for a player who has played most of his career in non league football and will be 30 years old in two years time.
Exeter City Football Club has to live within it's Business model, and not rely on funds from an overseas investor. What will happen if he gets fed up with his play toy and walks away?"
How did our board of directors ever rubber stamp a purchase like this, when Will Hoskins of Brighton was available on a three months loan deal?

What does our Business model look like. Is it sustainable on gates of 6000, or even 8000?"

How right you are wookj1. This transaction does not fit within any business plan or budget.
.
The Brighton Argus states the fee as £800k, no qualification. Not that I believe everything in the papers, but Mitchell seems to be alone in talking the fee down.
.
Fees are kept undisclosed because they are indefensible.

God it's a sign of the symes at afcb if we will happily let a good striker leave, we are better than symes now, not being nasty I like him but he hasn't been the same since his come back. I hope can come back in may for the play-offs and syme off with a few goals ( double pun tandre )
