Cherries: Quinn blown away by the rise of Tubbs

FORMER boss Jimmy Quinn labelled Matt Tubbs’s big-money move "mind-blowing" and told Cherries: "You could have had him for nothing."

Boss Lee Bradbury smashed the Dean Court transfer record to sign Tubbs from Crawley Town on Monday, for a package understood to be worth in the region of £800,000.

The deal left Quinn stunned – not least because he had wanted to sign the striker for free during his brief stint in the Dorset club’s hot-seat.

Quinn recruited Tubbs on loan from Salisbury City in November 2008 and had been keen to make the deal permanent.

But with Cherries in financial difficulties under the previous ownership of Sport-6, Quinn was unable to bring in the Verwood-raised frontman and the club did not follow up their interest after Quinn had been sacked on New Year’s Eve 2008.

Quinn, now manager of Nantwich Town in the Evo-stik Northern Premier, recalled: "I wanted to sign Matt full-time but it didn’t work out.

"I find it mind-blowing that he has gone for as much as he has as Bournemouth could have had him for nothing.

"He was only on about £600 a week at the time and they could hardly pay the wages."

Tubbs had played against Quinn’s Cambridge United in the Conference the season before joining him for six weeks at Dean Court.

Quinn said: "I already knew all about Matt before he arrived on loan. He has always been a terrific goalscorer and he wanted to know if there was any chance of him staying until the end of the season.

"I wanted to keep him but with the club being in a bit of trouble and wages not being paid, I couldn’t give him an answer.

"I had a meeting on New Year’s Eve which I thought would be about the possibility of money to spend in the window, only to be told I was no longer required. Unfortunately, Matt was left in limbo."

Eddie Howe, another of Verwood’s favourite sons and Quinn’s replacement in the Cherries hot-seat, opted not to sign Tubbs.

Former Northern Ireland international Quinn, 52, believes Tubbs has improved and has the qualities to fire Cherries into the Championship.

He added: "Eddie did a terrific job but I would have definitely kept Matt on.

"If there is one thing I know about it is strikers and Matt has a little bit of everything.

"He scores different types of goals – tap-ins, overhead kicks, headers and volleys, in and outside the area, from all angles.

"Matt has improved since then (his loan stint at Dean Court). Hopefully, he’ll give them a good return over the next few years.

"Bournemouth is a fantastic club. I was just disappointed to only have four months there – there is not a lot you can do in that amount of time, especially as they were on minus 15 points when I took over.

"But with the financial backing they have now, I don’t see why Matt can’t help them into the Championship."

What is this trying to prove?? You were an awful manager and saying you would of signed tubbsy for nothing doesn't make u a good one! You couldn't even mastermind a win over Blyth with two bights of the cherry ( pardon the pun )

If Jimmy Quinn had recomended Stanley Mathews, no one would have listened!

First off Jimmy Quinn was a great player for the club back in the 90's but unfortunately he was an awful manager. His tactics were hopeless and the style of football not worth paying to watch.
Matt Tubbs was not the player he is now when Quinn brought him here on loan. He's improved no end in the last three years and we're all hoping he will be the man to fire the club into the Championship.

If we had signed him then, he would have been gone by now.

If we did sign him he would have been captured by another club so at least we can enjoy him now.
And why is the echo saying it's £800,000 again, I thought Tom Mitchell explained the price was nothing near that!?

£600,000 with add ons will take it up to the £800,000 eventually. Sir Matt Tubbs will be worth every penny

Swings and roumdabouts we have got loads of players for nothing or next to nothing and sold them for gig money so a pointless argument Mr Quinn It happens to all Clubs anyway if we had got him and he proved to be good we would have been forced to sell him cos we were skint

Let's remember it's pretty unlikely that Jimmy Quinn has rung the Echo to express his view, he's only answering questions put to him.

As we're not allowed to comment on the other story on here today, I'll just say I have never boo-ed a Bournemouth player in 30 years of supporting. If Bowles ever plays for us in the first team I will make an exception. Getting into a fight with a bloke is one thing, being convicted of assaulting a women is very different

1. None of you know the whole situation about the assault as all the details haven't been put on here! And 2. I play for dortch and he is one of the best players I've played with and we would be lucky to have him! I've been bowled over by him this season ( pardon the pun )

pitman was also rubbish when he played for quinn, who would have thought he'd turn into such a good player under howe.
Lets remember Quinn as the great player he was, not as the manager that made us play the worse football I have ever seen in my life.
I think Tubbs will do great for us. At first I was against us signing him, but when you see his record over the last 2 years you have to believe he will bang in some goals for us, especially with mcdermoot, pugh, mcdonald, arter and malone as midfield options, even fogden has done well this season

I would agree there are 2 sides to all stories, and whilst I would agree there has to be a code of dicipline within a club, the times are now more liberal than in my era when without doubt a player would have been removed from the club it is considered harsh if a person has to lose his livelehood, and this makes football no different than a job in any walk of life, we should allow the club to take action as they seem fit, and allow people to get on with their life because at the end of the day it is nothing to do with us
