Cherries: Bradbury insists club was sensible with January cash

BOSS Lee Bradbury reflected on Cherries’ record-breaking shopping spree and insisted: We spent wisely.

The Cherries manager made his seventh signing of the transfer window by completing a deal for Huddersfield Town winger Donal McDermott ahead of last night’s 11pm deadline.

Former Cherries loan star McDermott penned a three-and-a-half year contract after the two clubs had agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to have been in the region of £175,000.

Although the transfer fees for Cherries’ seven new recruits have not been officially confirmed, McDermott’s arrival is believed to have taken Cherries’ estimated January spending to in excess of £1.6million.

However, Bradbury hit out at the suggested figures and expressed his delight at Cherries’ business during the month.

He told the club website: “I am very mindful of the size of the squad but, at the same time, I want to have good strength in depth and we have to get that balance right.

“People are still saying about the money we have spent, but we are still in the black from the players that we lost last year.

“Some of the figures being thrown around for what we have spent on Matt (Tubbs) and Donal are way off-track.

“We have spent money but we have spent it wisely and have brought in two very good players this week for what we have paid.

“I take a lot of pride in signing good players and good people for this football club and it is not something I take lightly.

“That is why it has taken so long to get our targets. We put in good bids and got knocked back and it takes time, but I was determined to get the players I wanted and we have done that now.”

Bradbury added: “This is the end of the rebuilding and I feel the jigsaw is complete.

“Donal McDermott is a very creative player who can play on either wing or in the hole, and he gives me another quality option and that is really important. He works hard for the team and has a lot of qualities and for me to bring in someone like him is exciting.”

McDermott said he “had a lot of love” for Cherries after helping the club reach the play-offs last season.

He told the club website: “I have come here to fight for my place. There is an unbelievable squad here and it is down to me to work hard and get myself in the side.

“I am so happy to be back here and my aim is to help the club as much as I can. The quality is here to have success this season.”

As part of McDermott’s transfer, he is ineligible to play against the Terriers this season, including in potential play-off fixtures.

Nothing is guaranteed but I think it was wise spending to build a promotion pushing squad. UTCIAD!

I am a great believer in strike partnerships.
For example Wesley Thomas and Jeff Goulding.
When they played together for Fisher Athletic during 2007/8 they scored 30 goals between them.
They met up again at Cheltenham during 2010/11 season and scored 28 goals between them. Both players scoring double figures in each season.
Thomas and Tubbs played together at Crawley for a short period at the beginning of this season. Hopefully, they can also become an effective partnership up front for the Cherries.

Players who look like they can't be bothered, sulk when it's not going their way or are only capable of hoofing the ball up the pitch = Money wasted.

Players like McDermott and Tubbs who seem really excited about being here and are entertaining for the fans to watch = Priceless.

We made enough from last seasons sales so I for one am not knocking anyone for spending the kitty on quality players. Good times ahead for AFCB I feel.

Well done Lee, we will all get behind the team and we must all be patient! they will not all gel 'just like that' no matter how much has been spent. Next season will be the more realistic season to push for promotion, but who knows we cud get 6th and spring a surprise. Just don't know if i could bare another Hufddersfield play off match!!!

Well Lee, you now have the tools to do the job, I hope you have the ability to achieve the clubs ambitions - if I were chairman, I would certainly be setting you a performance contract with the key objective of achieving promotion by next season

When you have your performance review you would either 'achieve' or 'fail' - there would be no in between!

I think Lee has brought some tremendous players, some I'd never of thought we had the remotest chance of signing, what's more, Lee has paid sensible prices. GREAT investments!!! We may get to 6th, it could be we have to be patient and next season make a big push. For me, it's more important to start seeing flowing attractive football, whilst winning at home, as that's what will bring the fans back. The signing of Tubbs in particular has convinced me that the attempts to get several players was not just hype, smoke and mirrors as some suggested and I believe that alone will bring some back, as we can hopefully start to believe what is being said from DC again.... we made brilliant signings and got them all on quite lengthy contracts, i think we could sell all of them except maybe tubbs for a profit, but if tubbs can bang in the goals for us then the fee will be justified, the younger lads are investments for the future and have the quality already
well done bradders and the board for backing him
