Cherries: Honours even as Robins rock the boat

POLITE applause rather than a rapturous ovation greeted Eddie Howe’s half-century as his 50th league game in charge of Cherries ended in stalemate.

A lacklustre opening period was followed by a lively second half as Howe’s promotion chasers took the game to their struggling opponents.

But despite laying siege to the Robins goal during a frantic finale, Cherries failed to find a way through as the visitors dug deep for a share of the spoils.

Chances were at a premium and entertainment in short supply during a turgid opening period as defences dominated.

Cheltenham will lay claim to having carved out the clearest opportunity of the first half when Cherries goalkeeper Shawn Jalal saved with his legs from Justin Richards.

And although the visitors edged possession during the early stages, Ryan Garry and Cherries skipper Jason Pearce both marshalled the troops superbly to ensure Jalal was well protected.

Referee Darren Sheldrake certainly played his part as proceedings failed to come to life, the official’s ambivalent display doing little for continuity.

Cherries began to gain a foothold as the half wore on, with Josh McQuoid’s rasping effort taking a deflection off a defender as it whistled past the upright.

A venomous free kick from Brett Pitman went straight down the throat of Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Brown, while Liam Feeney’s 25-yard ripsnorter flashed well wide.

Fourth official Eric Mackrell did everyone a favour by signalling a solitary minute of added time before the half-time whistle came as a welcome relief.

The North Stand made their feelings perfectly clear as referee Sheldrake awarded another contentious free kick at the start of the second half.

But as chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” reverberated around the stand, Jalal claimed with ease as David Bird’s delivery was wasted.

Danny Hollands, the two-goal hero of Cherries’ midweek win at Rotherham, took aim after 51 minutes, his left-foot volley soaring over the crossbar.

McQuoid, the provider of the cross for Hollands’s effort, then made way as Marvin Bartley came off the bench having recovered from injury.

Cherries’ vociferous appeal for a penalty fell on deaf ears after Rhoys Wiggins’s teasing centre had appeared to strike the arm of Robins defender Danny Andrew.

Fletcher, having belied his advancing years to make three starts in eight days, was replaced by Alan Connell with 20 minutes remaining.

And Bartley, having come off worse following a fully committed challenge on Joss Labadie, perished with 10 minutes left.

Try as they might, Cherries failed to break down a stubborn Cheltenham rearguard with Pitman side-footing wide when well placed in the closing stages and Goulding seeing his back-heel fly the wrong side of the post.

And there was still time for Brown to thwart Pitman, the Robins goalkeeper diving full length to his left to parry the striker’s sweetly-struck free kick from 20 yards deep into stoppage time.

Cherries (4-4-2): Jalal; Bradbury, Pearce, Garry, Wiggins; Feeney, Robinson, Hollands, McQuoid (Bartley, 52, Goulding, 80); Pitman, Fletcher (Connell, 70).

Unused sub: Thomas (g/k).

A well fought battle by the Cherries. Cheltenham tried for a goal the first half and then fought for the draw in the second.
Lot of fouls from Cheltenham. They didn't deserve to win.
It was good to see Cherries fight from the beginning.
A good game for the Cherries

Disappointing attendance after two excellent away wins, but we should be well satisfied with seven points from the last three games.
Regardless of league positions every game is tough for us,with such a small squad of players, and opponents will delight in taking advantage of that situation especially when we are up with the leaders. Keep trying lads and good luck for Tuesday.

When will someone lift the curse of poor refereeing at Dean Court. We have had some poor referees but today's referee took the biscuit. Despite the poor decision I guess the draw was a fair result though I hate teams who do time-wasting.

Agree with nonnogeppetto, when you have to contend with an competent referee who sees almost nothing it's hard to even play, let alone score.
Didn't help that everytime Cherries got anywhere near scoring, there were ten Cheltenham players in and defending their goal

That's football djd - we will face teams playing like that - it is up to us to break them down - Eddie will work on it. Don't worry, we will beat Clownty on Tue

Its sad when a team comes to dean court only to play for a draw, even their own manager got involved wasting time. the ref got sucked into their game plan and he spoiled what could have been a more entertaining game. nevermind though still in the automatic promotion places. UTCIAD

I agree with the ref comments we have seen some bad ones down here but todays took the honours for being the worst. As for the game not a bad performance considering the low squad numbers and cheltenham being content with a draw looks like marve came back to early hope hes not to badly injured.
well done lads .......now lets stuff notts county on tuesday night.

Can anyone explain why the 2 teams played in the same colour kit. Perhaps that was the reason so many passes went astray!!

Eddie, we need to play higher up the pitch at home, we need more pace and pressure at home, and why dont we leave 2 up when we defend a corner, most other teams do, if the keeper gets the ball we are away if it goes forward fast.

I'm colourblind and I found it impossible to see which team had the ball down the non-stand end!! Thought we were unlucky not to sneak it today but more important to beat County on Tuesday. Not complaining with 7 points from the last 3 games and still in touch with Rochdale.

I have to say I am very disappointed in Lee Bradbury, not just for his poor performance today and terrible passing, but for his unprofessional reaction to paying supporters today. Yes he was getting some stick for every pass being a hit and hope, and always giving the ball away but he has to accept that for the money we pay to watch professional footballers we expect better. After the ironic cheer when he passed to a fellow team mate, this resulted in Lee turning to the main stand and angrily saying f%^& off with a offensive hand gesture! Now when there are kids watching this role model and god knows how many paying supporters, I think on Monday he needs a stiff talking to control himself, as did Wazza at Aldershot. I think Lee should be ashamed of himself for that reaction and remember that it's those people who pay his wages and they have a right to vent some frustration.

On another subject why oh why is it so so difficult to purchase tickets via telephone? The excuse this week was short staffed! The excuse a couple of weeks ago was the snow! If they want the numbers they need to be able pick up the phone and take peoples money!

This is why i get so put off wanting to go and watch Bournemouth play.I seen a few things done which i know full well the England manager would not expect.Sorry, but tougher measures need to be introduce to punish players that go off the mark. These guys earn quite a wage and should be fined.Anyway lets hope Tuesday bring a win, which i think might just happen.

The club lacks an understanding of marketing principles and good customer service. It has no experience in this field I am afraid

Look at all the great suggestions people have posted on here in recent months to take more money

Providing well trained staff and resourcing a system that is able to respond to telephone enquiries about buying tickets is pretty fundamental to any business in the entertainment industry where people have to pay to get in!

Disappointing game for a disappointing crowd, but cherries can't expect great support when they play 10 at the back at home and only put extra men forward when the game is drifting away from them.

Bradbury had given away the five previous passes he had made and not surprisingly some of the crowd responded in the way they did. His responce was poor public relations.
I pre-paid for my tickets mid-week and arranged to pick them up from the ticket office early Saturday morning. When I got to Dean Court at about 0915 there was only one window open and the door for pre-paid tickets was closed. So I joined the queue. It took the one ticket office operative twenty minutes to serve just four customers! There were other members of staff in the background but just one serving customers in the queue. Service quite clearly needs to improve. On a more positive note we won a point which could have easily been three had Brett not missed a sitter in injury time. I remain optimistic though as all long suffering supporters probably do.

As for the "low" gate, the second highest in the Division, there has been precious little entertainment at Dean Court for months now and there is a "big" game on Tuesday and with money tight many will have had to make a choice between them. But this was another poor game, made worse by incompetant officials, Fletch must have wondered whether the referee was using Association or Union rules at times he so often had two arms around him! They looked a tired team, devoid of ideas for most of the game. County will at least play football, but lose and we are likey to drop back into the pack seeking play off places. Bartley's injury looked a bad one, so we are likey to be back to thirteen for Tuesday. 1 - 0 to the FL !

Agreed. It's quite amazing just how much you can get away with if you realise the ref just doesn't understand football. When long balls were being played up to their nr 11,
he would push and barge, unsettling our defence. Then, when he fell over, the useless ref blew for a foul against AFCB! Also agree with SOC regarding Fletch's treatment, although I think we've all come to expect it by now.
It was unfair of the crowd to criticise Bradders. Good, accurate passing is equally caused by finding space off the ball. If he had hoofed it long all the time he would still have been criticised.

Another disappointing result at Dean Court after impressive back to back victories on the road.
Cheltenham came here with a game plan & it worked perfectly, as AFC were once again unable to find a way through a resolute lower placed side.
I'm afraid the omens are not good for Tuesday. Notts County are a good side who have already comfortably beaten us here this season. I believe they will easily win again this time too.
With the FL continuing to treat AFC with disdain and the ever lengthening injury list leaving EH with no choices, it'll be the play-offs at best for us.

A win on Tuesday would be spectacular. To see the likes of Hughes & Co go home with their tails between their legs would be something the Echo could really write about.

Because AFCB doesn't have any money it doesn't operate a ticket office during the week. The couple of staff in the club shop sell tickets from a lap top hence if they're serving the phone doesn't get answered. I thought you could buy tickets on the phone through the BIC link. Why can't you buy tickets on the internet or in advance before/after the previous game?

As to the game the first half tempo at home games needs working on. It was great at Crewe but we seem lethargic and shot shy until we get to the second half. Still only one goal scored in the first half since Barnet away on 1st December a stat that needs improving ASAP.

The embargo continues to bite as Eddie Howe said afterwards that Fletch is nursing a back strain and two other players are playing with knocks. Why doesn't the PFA mediate on our behalf with the FL. We don't take experienced players on loan only other clubs youngsters. Surely the FL could concede that we could take under 21's on loan with a wage cap of £500pw!

Tuesday night is a big game for us. It's about time we clipped the Magpies wings.

5259 because only a couple of hundred visiting fans. Cheltenhan isn't exactly a footballing hotbed.

Plus for the casual fan there is a more attractive game on Tuesday night against Notts County.

The lads deserve at least 7000 attendance for this game.

A load of schoolboys playing what can only be termed as a pathetic attempt at football. More chances of scoring and missed opportunities than I have ever seen in any match. There is a great need to stop the 'clever stuff' and get the ball in the net. Also the hint is in the name of the game - foot ball. not head ball.
What was going on with the kit too - red and black and black and red for both teams. Totally ridiculous even for those not colour blind. The terminally bad referees get sent to Bournemouth for notoriously bad games. Our good hard earned money is being spent on watching total rubbish - Howe, for goodness sake remind the 'players' (use the term loosely) that we pay their wages. A load of hype about Tuesday's match - if they can't beat Cheltenham with so many opportunities, why place any hope on such useless players?
