SAM Shepherd (Primera) went one place better than his father Darren with a win at the second round of the Southern XC series, Crow Hill, last weekend.

With much of last year’s National Championships course in use, only in the opposite direction, Shepherd junior took the win in the under-12s two-lap race, while former footballer Darren had to settle for second in the Veterans with Ensbury Park’s Roland Tilley (Ride) in third.

Broadstone’s Luke Gray (Hargroves/Scott) once again took the win in the junior category with lap times that would have scared many of the riders in the Elite field. He won the race by six minutes from Steve James.

Parkstone’s Kobi Joyce left his BMX at home and rode to second in the under-8s, beating many of the under-10s in the process.

The vastly-improved Garrett Hill (Team ZeroFour) finished fourth in the Grand Veteran race behind Ray Crosthwaite (Pedalon.co.uk).

James Horton (Primera) took the win in the Open race, while Stuart Kind (Ride) backed up his win at Wareham Forest with a fine sixth place in the highly competitive Masters race.

Two ladies in action were Carol Tilley in the veterans finishing second and Cycling Weekly’s Hannah Reynolds (Jubilee), who finished third in the female Masters race.

David Couch (Palmer Park Velo) produced his best result of the season riding in the third round of the National Track Omnium Series at the Gosling Stadium, Welwyn.

After fine performance in the time trial, taking the win, Couch remains unbeaten in the time trial in any national or regional event since the start of 2008.

Couch then went on to finish second in the sprint final, fifth in the scratch race and the points race to finish second overall on the day.

Couch lies in second overall position in the series with one round to go before the national final in Manchester on August 8.

Julian Jenkinson (Utag Yamaha.com) took a surprise victory in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 30m time trial at the weekend, recording a time of 1hr 6mins 21sec.

Pre-race favourite Paul Jones (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) faded into second after initially being ahead of Jenkinson in the early stages. This weekend sees Jones along with Sarah Storey (VC St Raphael) and a strong team from the Poole Wheelers featuring Louise Dutch, Max Baldock, Terry Icke and Leighton Girling ride the National 10m time trial Championships at Newbury.

Tomorrow sees the latest round of the Wessex Cycle Racing League taking place over 60km at the quiet Woodlands road race course near Verwood. With online entry closing at midnight tonight, third and fourth category riders will also be able to enter on the day. The race headquarters is the Woodlands Village Hall, with the race starting at 10.30am. Entries for the Bournemouth Arrow CC’s 25 mile time trial on May 31 have been extended until Sunday.
