OAKMEADIANS chief James Croker insists his men are “better prepared” for a tilt at Bournemouth Sevens glory this weekend.

But Swanage and Wareham captain Rob Elford believes the holders, Bournemouth Lions, will be the team to beat when the area’s top clubs lock horns.

Lions claimed the South West Cup at last year’s inaugural festival with a thrilling 27-21 victory over rivals Oaks in an entertaining final.

And David Dunn’s side boast strong credentials again this year, according to Elford, who will be leading Swans’ hopes in the re-named South of England competition at the Chapel Gate event.

Previewing the Daily Echo-backed tournament, Elford told the Echo: “I think Bournemouth are certainly in with a shout.

“I know they do intend to retain the trophy.

“There will be some tough sides competing but Bournemouth are certainly well equipped to win it.

“As it’s being held in Bournemouth, I’m sure they’ll want to do their best.”

Elford revealed that Swans would be fielding an experimental team with a view to enjoying the eagerly anticipated festival.

He said: “We’ve had a long, hard season and some of the guys we’d have liked to take if we wanted to win are carrying knocks and have decided not to play.

“So we’re taking a mixture of players, including a few youngsters who haven’t played a great deal of senior rugby.

“We’ll give it a shot and have a good time with it.

“We’ll be looking to take part more for enjoyment, rather than taking it too seriously.”

Oaks are set to field a team which includes a number of Army stars when they meet Lions in the group stages, while Swans are joined in Group B by Wimborne, and Ellingham and Ringwood start in Group C.
