PENNILESS student Pete Smith tore up the unwritten rulebook and admitted his move to Poole Town was purely down to finances.

Smith last week walked out of the Wimborne Town exit door and put pen to paper on a deal with Tom Killick’s Wessex League champions.

And with the 23-year-old left-sided player about to graduate with a marketing degree from Bournemouth University and walk straight into an industry crippled by the credit crunch, the former New Milton Town star will be even more reliant on his football income.

Smith, whose brother Trefor has also signed for Dolphins ahead of next season, told the Echo: “I enjoyed my time at Wimborne, but I’m in my final year at university and I’ve got no money!

“I didn’t really want to leave Wimborne and I’ve never really been money orientated, but sometimes you have to do these things.

“While I am here, football will be my only income so sometimes you have to be selfish, but I think it will be a good season next year.

“My brother has just signed for Poole and it will be great to play with him too.”

Smith will line up for Killick’s charges in his second spell at the club, while his CV also lists a trial with Cherries in 2006.

He added: “It’s exciting times at Poole with the new ground coming and they have a good team. I’m looking forward to playing there again and I get on well with Tommy.

“You need competition for places and I think at Wimborne there was only me in my position because a few players were out injured.

“There are some good players at Poole so there will be some jostling for places, but that is healthy
