CHERRIES LEAVE DARLO QUAKING

5:42pm Saturday 27th September 2008

SUBSTITUTE Brett Pitman came off the bench to put the finishing touches to Cherries' first home league win of the season today.

The striker rounded off an entertaining affair when he netted deep into stoppage time to help Cherries record back-to-back victories.

Midfielder Marvin Bartley had put Cherries on course to land the spoils when he grabbed their opening goal after 15 minutes.

And after Liam Hatch's header had levelled for the Quakers in the 35th minute, Neil Austin's unfortunate own goal nudged Cherries back in front two minutes later.

Cherries boss Jimmy Quinn had the luxury of naming an unchanged starting line-up, with new loan signing Blair Sturrock having to settle for a place on the bench.

The Quakers made an enterprising start and Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal was forced to tip David Poole's rasping effort over the crossbar after just three minutes.

An electrifying run from deep by Billy Clarke ended with the Darlo striker being stopped in his tracks by Jason Pearce's excellent block tackle.

Cherries opened the scoring when Bartley was on hand to register his first goal of the season from close range after 15 minutes.

The opportunity came after a mistake by Darlo defender Steve Foster had seen his misplaced pass find its way to Jeff Goulding.

And after Goulding had stepped inside and had a low drive parried by goalkeeper Simon Brown, Bartley followed up to roll the ball into an unguarded net.

As the visitors looked for a quick response, Hatch's glancing header from a cross by Franz Burgmeier flew just past the upright.

Sammy Igoe squandered a decent chance to double Cherries' lead when he missed his kick after getting on the end of Warren Cummings's 27th-minute cross.

Foster was then booked for going through the back of Igoe before Brown acrobatically saved Darren Anderton's 20-yard snapshot.

The Quakers levelled when Hatch's looping header dropped over the despairing dive of Jalal, the striker pouncing after Cherries had failed to clear a free kick.

But another error by the visitors presented Cherries with a chance to regain the lead, with defender Alan White's stray clearance cut out by Igoe near the halfway line.

However, there was more than a slice of good fortune about the goal with Igoe's resultant pass to Goulding diverted past his own goalkeeper by Darlo defender Neil Austin.

Poole thought he had equalised after he had skipped through and beaten Jalal on the stroke of half-time, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Goulding made way for Sturrock at the interval before Gregg Blundell replaced Poole as the visitors made a change just seven minutes into the second half.

Sturrock was soon in the thick of the action with Bartley the beneficiary of his neat layoff, although Brown was equal to the midfielder's thunderous low drive.

The Swindon loan man was denied a goal after being sent clear by Igoe 14 minutes from time and although his shot was turned around the post by Brown, the referee curiously opted to award a goal kick, much to the chagrin of the home crowd.

Tempers flared after Bartley had jumped into a challenge with Jason Kennedy, with players from both sides squaring up. And after calm had been restored, Jason Pearce became the fifth player of the match to receive a yellow card.

Pitman, on as an 82nd-minute replacement for Anderton, put the finishing touches to victory when he drilled home an unstoppable third goal deep into injury time.

Cherries (3-5-1-1): Jalal; Guyett, Cooper, Pearce; Bradbury, Bartley (McQuoid, 90), Anderton (Pitman, 82), Hollands, Cummings; Igoe; Goulding (Sturrock, h-t).

Unused subs: Ward, Pryce (g/k).

Booked: Cummings, Pearce, Pitman.

Darlington (4-4-2): Brown; Austin (Proudlock, 82), White, Foster, Purdie; Poole (Blundell, 52), Kennedy, Ravenhill, Burgmeier; Clark, Hatch.

Unused subs: Hulbert, Miller, Kazimierczak (g/k).

Booked: Foster, Austin, Purdie, Hatch.

Referee: Clive Penton (Sussex).

Attendance: 4,124 (inc 191 away supporters).

Well done Bournemouth. A decent performance and good result. Just need to keep it up now!!! P.s Hollands and Igoe played especially well as did most of them. They really went for it today and held it together well, especially winning the ball in defence a lot!!!

Well done to all concerned. Another great result with the luxury of an unchanged team to start.Hope Brett Pitman will be encouraged by his goal, he has had to endure lots of criticism on this website recently and has answered his critics in the best possible way.

Great game to watch and three points well earned right from the kick off we knew that there was going to be goals scored and we weren’t disappointed. A great shame that only 4000+ saw the game. I do hope that the ones that had abandoned ship will now come back and support the lads. Come on you sleepy town wake up and smell the coffee you have a football team to support. Come on the Cherries

HEAR HEAR only 3933 home supporters think savi has some confidence building to do to encourage the home crowds the lads seem to be playing together now as a team ,but the team and the club need the financial gains from decent home crowds as you said wake up smell the coffee all being well the dark days are behind us yes im sure there will be hiccups along the way but the lads are playing with a new found confidence

Great result, this should kick start a run for the side now, 3 more games and we could be on + points. Well done Quinn for sticking with the same team and well done the players for their efforts, if they keep that up then there will be nothing to worry about this season. As for the crowd, it was always going to be that kind of size after the last home game, one swallow does not a summer make, now we have back to back wins and two positive performances things will be on the rise again, remember where we are and where the away fans came from, you will not get big away support like you do in league one. The home support was not that different from last season all things considered and will start to build as the team gets better, this could be the start of something so let's be positive!!!!

Great result, but missed it as I was working !
With regards to the low attendance - it will take a lot for the fans who have drifted away after three years of pap to convince them to return, although if we keep this run going it surely will attract some back.
With money so tight for everyone at the moment I can't see a big increase in attendances just yet.

And if Redknapp hadn't quit in 1992 to assist Billy Bonds at West Ham,he might have taken us back up and we might have a russian owner now and it may be us in the Premier League...... nothing like living in the past and thinking how things could have been.Wasn't Phil Brown sacked by Derby for poor results? To hear some comments on here over the last two years you'd think he was a Keegan-esque messiah.Doing a great job at Hull at the moment, but so did Jewell with Wigan in his first season in the Premier League. Fantastic result today, didn't think Darlo played that bad, just we defended well and attacked with numbers, mostly!. I do rate Dave Penney as a manager, but(Jimmy Quinn my lord,Jimmy Quinn, Jimmy Quinn my lord,Jimmy Quinn, as the song went when he was banging in the goals for us himself) JQ is starting to establish his way of playing and a higher tempo was noticeable today and so quicker at closing down. We've gained on Rotherham, so a win against them in our next home game would be a massive boost

Great game today. Well done Quinn for changing the style.

Think Cooper fits in well in the 3 at back as lets the other two attack the ball and has some composure on the ball.

Thought Hollands is getting back to form but how didnt Igoe get Man of Match. Thought he was absolutely superb today and they couldn't get to grips with him.

Thought Darlington were a good footballing team so doubley good result.

The most entertaining game for some time with everyone contributing and it looks as if they are now playing a system that fits the talents of the players. A "soft" goal conceded though and Jamal needs to work on his positioning. The gate was disappointing and I do think that the Club should make it easier to get tickets, what about re-instating cash gates? a gentleman next to me, who although a regular in the past, was making his first visit for years, was complaining at the difficulty he had in buying a ticket and the red tape involved, we need them back and it should be an easier process. The good thing is that he will be back for the next home game.

Really pumped up by 2 wins. However, I don't share some of the views here. We were lucky that Cummings mis control wasnt punsihed when darlo made it 2-2 only for the second "equaliser" be disallowed for offside just before half time. For long spells we struggled. Also I think one up front will fail long term agaisnt good teams despite the pleasing fluidity of the team. Both opening goals came from poor Darlo mistakes. So feeling better than 2 weeks ago but a long way to go!!

Nice to WIN at home and even though Darlo gave us two goals our luck seems to have changed . Hard game next week and that will show how far we have come. The gate never suprised me because it is after all 2nd Division Football, remember we were relegated and the hangers on may come back once we have hopefully caught up the likes of Barnet. Well done boys and keep it up.

First game i have been able to see this season and although a fantastic result it was far from convincing. I can see what Quinn is going for and i agree totally and cant wait till the players are all fit and they know there positions. I think we could potentially be the best team in this league.Players still did not know their positions well enough but when we got in the positions and played quickly we look really good and will always score goals. Would also like to see Sturruck and Gouling up front with Igoe in the hole as thought he was excellent yesterday.

Moose, Ferndown says...

So i don't get to see many games, but i saw this one amd enjoyed it. Staying positive, i would like to say that i) Sammy Igoe looked good - I feel the creative players are gonna be super crucial in this league. Goals win games and all that. If he plays like that all the time then great (i heard he was good against Bradford too) and ii)that Darren Anderton put in some good tackles. You know, sliding tackles. I saw quite a few. Don't know if that happens often, but... so well done Dazza. Well done all you Cherries!! Oh, and I have to mention the back heel too - can we we have some more of those please!!!
