BLAIR SWITCH PROJECT

JIMMY Quinn is today expected to complete a loan deal for Blair Sturrock after admitting he wants to further bolster his Cherries squad over the next 48 hours.

The Dean Court chief handed Sturrock a chance to impress in Tuesday's reserve match against Cheltenham and the Swindon Town forward did not disappoint during the 4-1 victory.

Quinn was pleased with the 27-year-old's performance, so much so that he entered negotiations to seal a one-month deal for the Scotsman, who is the son of former Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock.

Having last week spoken of his intention to find a temporary replace ment for Alan Connell while the striker recovers from knee surgery, Quinn clearly believes Sturrock fits the bill.

Speaking to the Echo yesterday, the Cherries boss said: "I like Blair Sturrock.

"His movement is good, he is the right age and he has the right experience.

"We've not got the biggest squad in the world so I'm trying to sort something out and do a deal.

"I had somebody watch him play for Swindon's reserves and he's a decent lad.

"He's hard working and I think it's ideal for us.

"Hopefully we can sort something out and we'll take him on a month initially."

Swindon boss Maurice Malpas confirmed yesterday that he had received a phone call from Quinn stating Cherries' desire to recruit Sturrock on a short-term basis.

Should the former Plymouth and Rochdale frontman seal a move to the south coast, he would join fellow loanee Craig Lindfield, recent capture Jeff Goulding, Brett Pitman and Lee Bradbury in the battle for striking berths.

One man who will not be leading the line for Cherries, however, is veteran forward Trevor Benjamin, who has been on trial with the Dorset club this week.

He scored in Tuesday's reserve match but boss Quinn will not be pursuing his interest in the former Leicester City striker.

As well as Sturrock, Quinn has not ruled out the possibility of additional recruits arriving ahead of Saturday's home clash against Darlington at Dean Court, revealing he has made "a couple of enquiries".

Meanwhile, the Cherries boss, along with assistant Jason Tindall, was spotted among the crowd at Weymouth to watch the hosts' 2-2 draw with Crawley Town on Tuesday night.

The Terras have made a number of players available for transfer in the past week.

  • Meanwhile, Quinn has explained his reasons for opting not to seek an extension to Scott Wagstaff's loan.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a promising spell after joining the Dorset club on a one-month deal from Charlton Athletic.

But a change in formation, which proved hugely successful at Bradford City on Saturday, means Wagstaff's first-team opportunities could have become limited had he remained at Dean Court.

"We changed the system on Saturday and played with wing-backs," Quinn told the Daily Echo.

"Scott's an out and out winger and I said he'd probably be better off playing for Charlton's reserves."

Whats `strange` signing Sturrock only for a month or actually getting a decent player, or maybe the Waggy move out because that does puzzle me ! Surely we are not going to play the Bradford system at HOME games ?

I am sure that JQ has enough experience to know not to reveal what system he intends to play at home or away. It is no point in letting the opposition know in advance. I guess that this coming Saturday may well be played with a different system my hope is that we win whatever the tactics. Come on you REDS

Blair Sturrock appears to have a history of playing from the bench, and his scoring record is not exactly top drawer, but Quinn must see something in him. I can understand not going for Benjamin, and I can understand Wagstaff leaving to a certain extent, what I am having trouble understanding is the line in the article where it says Sturrock will be joining fellow loanee Craig Lindfield, recent capture Jeff Goulding, Brett Pitman and Lee Bradbury in the battle for striking berths. Lindfield yes, Goulding certainly after that it all goes a bit fuzzy!!!!

He was excellent at Bradford - and against Omar Daley too, who is really quick. Daley got away from him at times, but overall Bradbury did very well both attacking and defending.

Maybe you should reserve judgement until you've actually seen him play in the role?

What game where you at, he was terrible.

Played the worst pass ever to create Bradfords goal, when he should of just punted it forward or out instead of across our defense.

Constantly tried to clear it and passed it to a Bradford player.

Bartley played the ball back onto Bradbury's left foot when Daley was right there with him. All he could do was pass it with his weaker foot, first time, to Anderton who mis-controlled it. Colbeck moved forward with the ball, both Anderton and Pearce failed to tackle him and he scored. You can't blame it on Bradbury when 4 players made mistakes!

During the match he was beaten a few times by a very pacey winger, not bad for a 30-something playing out of position.

Who would you have played as right wing-back? I'll take the 3-1 win thanks!

Omar Daley has a competitor in the "quick" stakes.
The Shrewsbury Number 17 (his name escapes me for the minute)right wide player gave Exeter City's left back a three yard start and went past him as if he was standing still a couple of weeks ago. He is also a decent crosser of the ball.
Wonder if Jimmy will use the same tactics as Bradford up at the Shrews in three weeks time?

I think if you re-watch the incident the ball was played well above Anderton and behind him. Surely a basic rule of defending is, if in doubt, get it out and not play it across your back line like that. I am not arguing he shouldnt of played there and has been ok in that position as a replacement but he isnt good enough to cement that role. I dont see it as 4 players making a mistake when one could of kicked it out. To be fair he still did well to finish and score. Also with 5 mins to go an easy ball out with time and he fluffs it to one of their players and its on other days we would get puinshed again for mistakes like that. I will tkae the 3-1 win as well thanks!

You're right, Colbeck had a lot to do as Anderton and Pearce both had good chances to take the ball off him. Therefore, the goal was not solely the fault of Bradbury, especially after he'd been given the ball on his wrong foot in a tight situation.

You didn't answer my question - who else would you have played at right wing back? I don't think we have much of a choice in that position and Bradbury has defended well for a forward - they generally can't tackle at all! Putting it another way, rather him or Teflon?!

Did i not say and i quote "I am not arguing that he sholdnt of played there" as we dont have mch choice at the moment and he is useless up front. At the end of the day, regardless of how you view the goal and IMO a suicidal ball across your defence was the problem, i still thought he had a bad game in general!

He played a blinder against Forest a couple of seasons ago (Vokes' first match), he scored a cracker at home to Doncaster the first time SOD returned, he set up the winner at Swansea last season with a great piece of skill, etc, etc.

He can make it if he REALLY wants to and makes football his number one priority, it's a question of desire and whether JQ can make him hungry for it. If not, then he'll be gone at the end of this season.

He's had his chances and didn't take them!!! What makes you think he will play on Saturday? he is now a sub at best and that's all he'll be now for the rest of the season unless there is injury problems, I have seen him play this season and other than the goal against Portsmouth which gave me false hope he has been less than awful, no commitment, slow and more times than I care to mention had Anderton in his ear telling him to get into the game, now you may think he was a good prospect last year but since then it's all been a downward spiral. I really do believe he is not going to make it in this team and will leave this season in January or at the end of the season, sorry to say it but that's how his career is looking at the moment.
