DAZ: MUST DO BETTER

SKIPPER Darren Anderton saw Cherries' opening-day jinx strike again and then insisted: "We must do better."

Anderton was one of the few shining lights as Cherries began life in League Two with a fortuitous 1-1 draw against Gillingham on Saturday.

He capped an excellent individual display by firing Cherries into a first-half lead before the Gills levelled through substitute Gary Mulligan in the dying seconds.

Although Mulligan's dramatic late equaliser denied Cherries a first-day victory for a ninth year in succession, it was no more than the visitors had deserved.

Anderton told the Daily Echo: "It was unfortunate we didn't get the right result, but we know we can play a lot better.

"It was a tough game, blood and thunder at times, and it felt like a defeat for us because we gave away a goal so late in the day.

"We are all very disappointed but we need to play better, it's as simple as that. We're a footballing side and we need to play better football.

"It was a real battle and although we know we're probably going to have a lot of games like that, we've got the players who can cope with it.

"With a little bit of luck, we would have come away with a clean sheet. But we didn't create as much as we know we can so we'll be working on that."

Gillingham could have been out of sight had it not been for some woeful finishing from striker Simeon Jackson and an inspired display from Cherries' new loan signing Shwan Jalal.

Jackson missed a gilt-edged opportunity midway through the first half, while goalkeeper Jalal pulled off a series of fine saves to keep the Gills at bay.

Cherries boss Kevin Bond said: "It's always disappointing when you concede so late in the game but we'd had a few scares before that.

"I thought our goalkeeper played very well and kept us in the game. He made three or four good saves and I thought we were fortunate to come in leading 1-0 at half-time.

"But you need to show that resilience, which I thought we did for periods in the second half. Although we had one or two decent attacks, we didn't play well and there was never any sustained pressure. We almost rode our luck but, on the balance of play, didn't deserve to so I can't complain."

Bond added: "It's going to be difficult for us. Nobody has a right to win games and teams aren't going to lie down. We are going to have to work for everything we get.

"I know people were saying we only had to win our first six games to erase the points deficit, but it doesn't just happen like that."

Meanwhile, Bond completed the signing of Carl Pettefer ahead of kick-off on a short-term contract. The Wimborne-based midfielder was an unused substitute.

Kevin makes a fair reflection of what happened on the field on Saturday and he is to be commended for that no one should criticise him for his honesty. The team needs our support and not our criticism I hope that support will be shown at matches and here by what is posted on this site. Lets have no more of ‘Bond out’ or ‘Mostyn out’ on this site unless it come to a time when they have shown true incompetence.

Completely agree guys. Its only the first match and I guess after the end of last season we felt "entitled" to the win.

Its not good saying "bond out" etc - especially after one game - who would want to pick up the poisined challis?

So lets get behind the boys.

And I agree Igoe out - for the pure reason i'm not sure how to pronounce his name - is it I-Go or Igloo?

Was Igoe the one wearing a red shirt, looking around aimslessly and not running anywhere? I thought he was a spectator at first, then I realised spectators put in more effort than he did.

Bond has to be the most negative person ever, he is so depressing! Why can't he just say: 'It will be difficult but we have nothing to fear from any side in League 2?' He needs to balance out the bad points with some motivational encouragement, otherwise the team will not have self-belief.

Oh, and nice pic of Anderton - looks like a bunny caught in the headlights!!

Dazza really does not take a good picture, does he? Class on the ball still, although he was running out of energy as the second half progressed. I'm concerned we may have to overuse him early on and lose him for the latter part of the season.

Kenno - must be something in the air down in Devon!!!

I take it you weren't at the game then? Dazza worked his socks off, it's not his fault his legs will struggle to last for a full 90 minutes now. He is also on a pay-per-play deal. Brett is simply not good enough in the position KB played him - once again, not his fault (time may tell if he is good enough in his correct position). Sammy looked like someone who has just come in to a set-up and is still feeling his way (which he is) - once again, not his fault and time will tell.

Way too early yet to be slagging anyone off, in my opinion.

Brett Pitman.......I quite like the new signings but how is Pitman a professional player that people go and pay to see.....he was as rubbish on saturday as he has been for the first half of last season.

Players like him just put the money paying genuine fans off from watching.

There have got to be better guys than him to play for us ?

Give Brett Pitman a break !!!!! He has proved that when the so-called Manager plays him in his correct position, he will score goals, blame the BOND !!!! Short memory ? Pre season goals ?

I agree Bond should be given a chance and the other article is only here in name now so no point worrying about him. We got most of what we wanted e.g Club to support new board out of admin and removal of the biggest threat to survival now its time to close ranks and get behind the Team

Oh come on be fair what are you baseing that proof on a few goals against non league opposition in friendlys to early to knock him yet but he was crap on Saturday when it counted so he must improve or get dropped

Kevvo.

Fair point on Pitman but he was consistent in pre-season Up front and he scored a good goal against Pompey!

Play him as a centre-forward Bond!!!!!!! Put Kuufour coming in from the left. He's quicker and better on the ball. Either that or McQuoid. Thought he put a fair amount of effort in when he came on and will only get better form playing. Could be the next Wade Elliot? Just a thought.....

Maybe and as I said to early to knock him yet but just saying you cant base an assumption on a players ability based on non conpetative(to a degree) matches. Maybe he is out of position but he really needs to establish himself after a few inconsistant seasons dont you think
