POWELL JOINS CHERRIES ON TRIAL

FORMER England defender Chris Powell is training with Cherries, the Echo can reveal.

The veteran 38-year-old left-back, who was capped five times for his country during Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign as national boss, linked up with Kevin Bond's squad this morning on trial and could make an appearance during Cherries' pre-season clash against Dorchester on Tuesday.

Powell is unlikely to feature during Saturday's clash against Bristol City, but could turn out against Dorchester next week.

"This is definitely a here and now short-term situation if it were to happen," said Bond.

"I've got two young boys potentially who are going to be playing centre-half, with potentially a young goalkeeper, so you are undoubtedly going to need some experience around them.

"Whilst Bradders is a very experienced player, he isn't a very experienced defender. So from that point of view I wouldn't be unhappy with somebody who is a talker who can help them."

Lambeth-born Powell, who will be 39 in September, is a free agent after being released from a third spell at Championship outfit Charlton Athletic earlier this year.

Cherries' long-serving left-back Warren Cummings had a transfer request accepted last week.

Meanwhile, Cherries chief executive Alastair Saverimutto has confirmed that all the required paperwork regarding the club's bid to exit administration has now been submitted to the Football League.

Saverimutto added that the league was expected to review the documentation "in due course".

i thought someone said youth was the way forward? surely a 38 year old is a bit much. at least anderton is class and doesnt need to run too much because of it.

Good player 10 years ago, interested to know why Bond has him on trial begs the question about the future being youth though. I understand he is still very fit and could probably do a job for us but after last season and the recent comments it comes as a bit of a surprise, still the position we are in we have to take what we can get I suppose.

I hate to criticise but we sem to have learned nothing from last seasons mistakes, there are reported to be 350 players looking for a new club, you would expect any manager to have a list of players he would like to bring in, but we do not seem to be looking any further on whom we can give a trial to, the chances of finding the players you need are almost non existant

I would hope they will put up more of a fight to keep Cummings. He's a top player and could provide another 5 years of good service. I'd be suprised if powell lasts 5 months

Remember Luther Blissett? He was old too. What a load of old rubbish he was. And Darren Anderton. Complete waste of space.

What. An international experienced defender on a short term contract, why not, can these posters read, bond says a short term fix, he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, probably **** fault for handing in a transfer request.

We haven't signed him, he is on trial and if anythign happens Bondy says it is short term. This guy is fit not like Telfer and Perrett. Give it a break.

Now the posts are beginning to make sense. He is a quality player and 'you don't win anything with kids.' You need experience and we have Anderton, Bradbury and now Powell, even if only for a short while. Not bad for the basement league.

Im sure he will do a job for us i think people will be doubtful because of the telfer & perrett situation & confused as we have been told youth was the key ?

bradbury is not particularly old. anderton was a top quality england international, and a skilful passer of the ball, making most of his passes ...still. unlike the majority of our and the division's players, what a pass on monday night! powell was a dodgy england international plays in a different position where he may need to run. darren has the skill not to. how much money would he want? we could get someone from the lower leagues who is as good i expect.

I think it's a safe bet with potentially the entire back row being under 23 that having someone with a bit of pedigree and experience could be a smart move for cover in the short term and perhaps even help the long term development of the youngsters.

I don't think anyone on here would have insight enough to be able to tell if he's going to be able to bring that to the team or not.

Lets get this in perspective a little bit shall we! No praise for looking at the 2 young stoke loanees, for playing mcqouid in the friendlies, signing partington. Yet look at 1 or 2 experienced players and look at the responses.
Just youth isnt the answer, you need a balance and we will be playing with alot more younger players this season! Personally cant see anything wrong with Anderton, Bradbury (at right back), Igoe and Powell, with rest of the sqaud being under 25!!

Your right you do need a balance and age is not as important as fitness that where we went wrong last season if Telfer had not been carrying that injury and Perrett wasnt his normal self we may have got a couple of points at the start of the season. Mo last Year whoever did Telfers medical should have been sacked. As he admited he had been carrying it before he signed

Powell has always looked after himself and was very popular with his team mates and a good influence in the Charlton dressing room.
This could turn out to be a good short term move, depending on how he shows up in the friendlies.
Trevor Aylott was regarded as past his best when he signed for us and look how that move turned our club fortunes around.Powell is a similarly charismatic figure.
Give the lad a chance.

With the position we are in and the need to start the season well which would you choose, a youth player no experience in league 2 who could lose form easily with a couple of bad starts or a 38 year old ex England international proven at the back and very fit, that's the choice people. I can't see why age is again the bid issue here, surely we need proven players if we want the start we need and Cummings wanting to leave will have prompted this move, if he stays then I can't see it happening and as others have said it's a trial we haven't signed Powell or anyone yet.

Nixtrix_afcb, Sheffield says...
8:27am Fri 25 Jul 08

We could go with youth only and hope it works out, but with the prospect of 20pts deduction to start with, if not 30pts (Rotherham and Luton respectively - although I don't know if the Millers deduction has hit national press yet)I think we could do with a few quality experienced players, England caps is a bonus, and I don't think Powell is a hanger-on just seeing out his career in a sea-side town. Personally, if Bobby Charlton and Peter Shilton want to join the books I'm more that happy!

SUFC, says...

You will find that Chrissy Powell is the best player on the pitch if he signs for you. Why do you think he is still so highly rated by the fans of every club he has played for? He is class.
