Pearce: Life goes on without loan stars

DEFENDER Jason Pearce says it's time for Cherries' players to "do the business", with the club's loan sextet no longer available to help shoulder the burden.

Reading quartet Alex Pearce, James Henry, Jem Karacan and Scott Golbourne have all returned to the Premier League outfit, while Max Gradel (Leicester City) and Jean Francois Christophe (Portsmouth) are also back with their parent clubs.

But rather than worrying about losing the loan men, 20-year-old Pearce believes Cherries' own stars have a responsibility to turn the struggling League One club's fortunes around.

"The lads that are left are well up for it and confident," the former Pompey trainee told the Daily Echo. "I think we can do it. We've lost a couple of loan players and have a pretty small squad again. But, at the end of the day, we're the ones who are signed and the ones who have got to get us out of the problem."

Pearce, who is nursing a tight left hamstring but expects to resume full training on Monday, felt the team's form over Christmas was good until the disappointing defeat at Brighton.

He said: "It was very frustrating that we didn't get anything at Brighton.

"To lose in the 94th minute killed us. It was really demoralising and we were distraught not to get anything from the game."

The young defender has been tasked with a number of different roles by boss Kevin Bond in his 20 appearances this season. He began at full-back before starting the past five games at the heart of the back four.

Asked where he preferred to play, Pearce said: "At first I thought left-back, then I got a run at centre-half and I enjoyed it there. I just want to play football and wherever I'm put I'll enjoy it. There's competition at centre-half now."

He is no doubt referring to fit-again duo Josh Gowling and Russ Perrett, who are nearing fitness after injury lay-offs. Both are likely to be in contention for a starting spot next weekend at Cheltenham for what Pearce dubbed a "massive game".

He said: "I've played with Josh Gowling and Russ Perrett and they're both quality players.

"One or both of them will come back and do a great job."

Pearce, who formed a partnership with namesake Alex in the absence of Gowling and Perrett, tries to improve his game by watching the likes of the former Luton player in action.

He added: "I look at Russ in training and he's very good on the ball and a strong player. He's very experienced and you can always learn from players older than you."

BLOB Reading trio Henry, Pearce and Golbourne have all been named in the club's provisional squad to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the FA Cup third round this afternoon.

Bad news first - all the loan players gone, we will miss Gradel in particular. Good news (perhaps) at least we now have a permanent squad with something to play for. I wonder about the commitment of loan players, and it can't do much for the morale of the club's own players to be constantly put on the bench. The team was showing signs of starting to work as a team, and you only get that by playing together regularly, so in a sense we are back to square one. On balance I think it is bad news.

Tend to agree but it was allways going to be a risk giving injury prone players contracts and the shoring them up with Loan Players which of course is down to Management. having said that we are 2nd from bottom with all these so called Loan Stars so we are hardly going to have to do much to at least equal our performances with them included. Yes mixed feelings but weve still got a chance with Players playing for their own futures and not just helping out.

With the loan players going and as yet no sign of any coming in we have a very small squad which means we will struggle. As i write this we are going bottom as Port Vale and leading 2-0 at Carlisle. Oh dear its getting worse.

May be luck is changing Carlisle now 3-2 up. Looks like staying second from bottom.

was at carlisle v port vale today, to be fair it wasn't fooball conditions up here but vale looked well up for it and were dangerous on the break. i've seen cherries a number of times this season and the only place we are going is Macclesfield and Morecambe next season. there is no way a squad are size is even capable ofmounting a serious relegation battle. the best thing for us to do is to start looking to next season, there is not a lot between lge 1 and 2 ok you have likes of forest and leeds in lge 1 but cherries have been playing the likes of Brentford, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Bradford for years.

What difference would it make for example if we were in lge 2? crowds would still be around 4-5 thousend, away would grounds will be around the same.At this point I would take a 10 point deduction, finish bottom, Kive Kevin Bond 1 season in lge 2 which he has to get us out of, (not to the confrence). Who knows what 2008 will hold in store for u, one thing for sure is we are going down.

RcMorgan20 Oh how I hope you are wrong about relegation but alas I fear you are right and if we are going down we may as well lose the 10 points I wouls rather see the Club relagated and free of serious Debt than struggle on and go out of Business its a risky thing to do though but the Long term survival of the Club is the most important thing and Richard Board if that makes me a spineless child then so be it.

I think one way or another we are looking at relegation this season, sad to say but with everything thats going on at the moment it looks the most likely outcome. It is good to see players back from injury and if we can get max back as well then perhaps we may have a chance but it's not looking too good from where I am watching.

richard.broad, why all the attacks on kevvo? oh and what exactly are you saying is going to happen, for all I can see we are on the way down and admin is the likely result, also what has the bank got to do with it, they would more than likely welcome admin so they can get some money back, and we can go into admin it's been 10 years, please stop making these foolish statements that are not at all accurate.

no offence is meant for kevvo- who is on here by most.however if i think i am seeing wrong comments i do have an opinion. what worries me more than anything that everybody seems to be rubbing their hands with glee.lose 10 points-lose the debt-****-thats what it is. where are wrexham with a stadium that takes in international games-they are bottom. we have no ground-without this many supporters tell me that when that happened we lost our pride-to a mickey mouse sale and leaseback that the team never got any new players out of it.
it seems that sly and jeff have had enough of shelling out-and you cannot blame them.investors- surely a smoke screen-dont beleive there was one.are we going down-well it looks like it-but i will have a crisp blue note with any of you lot-tell you now- we are staying up

no adminstration-safety in staying up- thats what i mean. admin is sharp practise-its bending the law- and i for one is greatly against it. you will have to sell anyone you can get any money -perhaps it may come to that. if you want to save money mr jones look at all people engaged-everybody look at programme-next time- you have three people doing the same job in some occasions-look in who s who at dean court-cut your cloth jones-salery is the biggest overhead

All I said and I meant was if and only if we are going down I would rather see the club have a chance of clearing most of its debt and surviving for the future if that makes me a spineless child then thats what I must be Why is your opinion more valid than mine I dont insult you but if thats what floats your boat then carry on . rather sad though dont you think

**** good job you're not the manager!Talk about defeatist!Where's your fight, man? We can't just give up;football builds you and knocks you down, but it also can pick you up when you don't expect it!Carlisle coming back to win proves that. That should give us a lift! We have to keep believing.Keep Perrett,Gowling and Garry fit and we've got some good defenders. When Dazza is fit we've got the crucial experience we need in midfield.Pitman and Vokes are starting to score goals.Neil Moss fit again and things will be a lot more settled at the back.
Going into administration does not guarantee we come out the other side.
