TAXI drivers in Dorchester have been brushing up on their history to impress the tourists.

Five drivers have completed the Welcome Host courses as part of an initiative by West Dorset District Council and the Dorchester and District Chamber of Commerce.

Roy Christopher, who is chairman of the West Dorset Hackney Drivers' Association, said: "I have learned more about the history of the town attending these sessions than in 40 years of living here.

"Training like this not only gives us a competitive edge but means we can be real ambassadors for the town and we hope to encourage more drivers to sign up."

President of the chamber of commerce and town crier Alistair Chisholm helped teach the drivers some of the local history.

The training included details about Thomas Hardy, Judge Jeffreys, Maiden Castle and Athelhampton House.

Mr Chisholm said: "The story of Dorchester's past is fascinating and people travel from across the world to be here.

"But many visitors arrive without a car and some interesting sites can't be reached by bus or train.

"That's why it is so important that local taxi drivers are able to talk about the local area and its history and that is why this scheme is proving to be such a success."

Due to the success of the scheme more drivers are being encouraged to come forward and take the course.

Drivers completing the South West Tourism course will receive certificates and badges to display in their taxis.

Any driver wanting to do the course should contact the council's licensing team on 01305 252214.
