THE smoke arising from the wooded grounds of a Poole school had no need for a visit from the emergency services.

Fires were built and marshmallows toasted and all was under control as Year 3 children at the Collegiate Prep School in St Osmund’s Road celebrated their new Forest Schools status.

Amba Powell, seven, said: “I think it’s brilliant and I now know how to survive outside in the woods. We are learning so much about nature.”

Rex Batt, seven said: “I really enjoy being outside and making things – I just love it.”

Head of Prep, Kay Smith said: “What a celebration. Introducing ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ and Forest School activities has not only enlivened the curriculum at the Collegiate Prep but it has also developed the pupils’ understanding and appreciation of the natural world and raised their awareness of the responsibility they have to preserve it.

“We are committed to becoming a sustainable school and have successfully achieved our Silver Eco Award. Our pupils understand that they will be caretakers of the world.”

What a sad, sad world we live in when kids no longer play in the woods on their own all day as my generation did and have to take lessons in it at school.

It's certainly a sign of the times, with far too many bad people out there who would do harm to children at play .....
