Anger as Twin Sails bridge closed overnight Anger as Twin Sails bridge closed overnight

THE TWIN Sails Bridge was closed to marine traffic last night after Borough of Poole decided on some last-minute work.

Boat owners were angry after they had only a day’s notice that there would be no 9.30pm and 11.45pm lifts last night.

Brian Smith, who keeps his boat at Cobbs Quay said: “They should be giving us proper notice if the bridge is going to be shut. It’s very hard to contact everyone and let them know. People travel down and then find they can’t get through the bridge.”

However John Rice, engineering and maintenance manager, Borough of Poole said: “As we are not closing the channel to marine traffic there is no statutory notice period required in advance of these essential maintenance works.

“Initially we had intended to start these works following the 23.45 lift. However, the contractor, Hochtief (UK) requested more time to carry out the work as they wanted to ensure that no disruption was caused to the 5.30am lift, which is popular with fishermen.

“Since the winter schedule came into force at the beginning of October, neither the 21.30 or the 23.45 lift has been required so we hope that disruption to marine traffic will be minimal.

“We apologise for any disruption caused while work is carried out and thank mariners for their patience and understanding.”

Dear ECHO
Just a suggestion, but why not save everyone's time by simply telling us when the bridge ACTUALLY IS WORKING?
You could probably get a headline out of it.

Echo love every little issue with the lifting bridge, personally I think it has been great so far but I guess it's easier to knock the local authority than give positive stories relating to this great facitilty for us locals.

Brian Smith - people who keep their boats upstream of two lifting bridges should expect trouble............ Still, when the new Marina is built, you won't have to worry any more! I can think of better times to be going out in a boat than 2130 and 2345 anyway.....

Those people who keep their boats in Cobbs Quay were doing so well before this awful contraption was designed.
The Echo is quite right to inform us when the thing breaks down, which it seems to do with far too great a frequency. A more traditional design like the old bridge would perhaps have allowed a single span to open for the boats, a proper non lifting bridge wouldn't have broken down at all.

Can it be renamed the Style Over Substance bridge?
Far more apt, seeing as it doesn't even look like the "sails" depicted in all the artist impressions.

I cannot see why Mr Smith is making such a fuss. It would appear that no one has used the 21.30 or 23.45 lifts this month.
So one assumes he had no intention of going through the bridge at that time of night.
Just another "if I winge, i will get my name in the Echo" person.
