SAFETY first was the theme of a poster competition at Dorset County Hospital.

Children of hospital staff came up with designs to inform youngsters of the risks associated with medicine as part of Patient Safety First Week, which runs until today, Friday.

First prize winner Eden Yates, aged six, received a book token, and nine-year-old Freddy Dodd, whose work came highly commended, also received a prize.

Entries included themes around the correct storage of medicine, showing children what to do with pills if they find them and reminding them that tablets are not sweets.

They were judged by the chief pharmacist, Tim Hanlon, and the chief executive, Jean O’Callaghan.

Jean said: “All of the entries were very good and it was hard to choose a winner.

“We added a highly commended prize because it was just so hard to decide.

“Our staff have some very talented children,” she added.
