Hundreds join anti-Sandbanks Tesco campaign
OPPOSITION to Tesco taking over the site of the Sandacres pub in Sandbanks is growing, with two petitions and an online campaign now under way.
Since Saturday, Sandbanks Stores in Banks Road has collected more than 450 signatures against the opening of a Tesco Express on the peninsula – despite the fact that the supermarket giant has acquired the lease and does not need planning permission for the new store.
Karen Denham, the shop’s owner, said: “We’ve had lots and lots of support. Nobody I’ve spoken to wants another Tesco – there’s one at Lilliput and one at Branksome. It will be a blot on the landscape.”
She warned: “It will kill off small businesses.
“There isn’t a big footfall in the winter and we all struggle to make a living. A boycott would be really good.
“ The people of Sandbanks and the surrounding area don’t want any sort of supermarket.
“It’s a quaint, old-fashioned type of seaside resort.”
Gary Willingham has started a Save Sandacres Pub online petition, and estate agent Sean Murphy’s Facebook campaign against the takeover has attracted hundreds of supporters.
But Melanie Chiswell, community liaison manager for Tesco, said: “In our experience people welcome Tesco Express stores because they are convenient.
“They offer a shop people can walk to, provide jobs and also regenerate buildings that are no longer in use.
“I believe there are many in the area that will support and use it. I have spoken to people on the phone who are pleased that we’re coming.
“We’ve had inquiries about jobs already.
“We’ve never experienced a boycott – our stores are popular when they are opened.”
Ms Chiswell said most Tesco Express customers came from within a one kilometre radius of the store and walked there.
Each store had a distribution plan to ensure they could be restocked safely.
“Lorries will be of a size that’s appropriate for the site and we will be mindful of neighbours when we carry out deliveries,” she promised.

First the Beehive was demolished - again, amidst opposition from locals - and now The Sandacres. We don't need another Tesco convenience store, as there is one about a mile away at Lilliput.
On principle I will certainly not go into this new one and I hope other locals do the same thing. It's time people stood up to the greedy monster that is Tesco.

The beaches of Bournemouth & Poole have survived this long without any supermarket (irrespective of whether its Waitrose, Tesco, Lidl !!) - its not the place for one. There are normallly small local traders associated with beaches - all around the country - if you start using these giant companies for your beach visits - you'll kill them off and then wonder why there are no local stores ! All this and I live 4 miles from Sandbanks - I dont go there in the height of the summer as its too packed but it a beautiful place in the winter to go for a walk.
Nobody asked the locals if we wanted to keep the pub, we've simply been presented with a 'done deal.'

It's a great shame that the Sandacres has been forced to close - they always had a great attitude towards the windsurfers and kitesurfers and it was an easy pub to cycle to from Bournemouth - they would even lend you a bike lock!
The small shops will really struggle to survive if Tesco are allowed to proceed. They may claim that they will create 20 new jobs but many more will suffer as a result.

The fact the pub closed down is no fault of Tesco's, managed properly with some money spent on it it would still be there, look at the Jazz Cafe round the corner, smaller building, smaller plot and yet packed? The place didn't sell itself on the greatest thing it had, its location. They had a tiny outside area of a few picnic tables on a bit of hard standing in the corner of an empty carpark?
I'd rather see a pub there but if the only other option is a boarded up windows then i'd rather see it used whoever it is.

And no, I'm not a resident, but I regularly go to the beach and Harbour and don't want to see it spoiled. There is no need for Tesco, but there is need for a nice pub, where you can sit outside - one that blends into the surroundings.

You got to be honest scrumpy, there is a lot down there who think they are the "cats whiskers",so many posers.Yet they are no better than a lot of us.Money grabbers, making it out of the most of us and not always honestly.
But there are also a lot of 'normal' people, who are there as much by luck - bought years before the property boom - as by their wealth and what about those who have worked long hard hours building up their businesses and yes making a lot of money. I've met them, people who worked six / seven days a week for years to make it a success. Not all are born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
To dismiss someone just because they have money is just as bad as looking down your nose at someone because they don't.

If it was announced as a done deal as Tig said then your issues should be with the previous leaseholder or the freeholder not with Tesco. They don't go around putting guns in peoples mouths making them sign over their properties and they also don't just throw massive amounts of money at someone until they say yes. Case in point being the planned supermarket in Kinson, the council got greedy and expected Tesco to fund their much needed roadworks in exchange for planning permission and Tesco backed out.

The sorts of places like Cafe Shore attract the wannabe's, the Champagne People with Lemonade Money, those blinded by a belief that if they go there then they've made it? I doubt a truly self made person would stand for the obnoxious service or rubbish food!

Back on topic, I don't support the continued expansion of Tesco but wonder if the store does open, of all the people opposing it how many will actually shop there - quite a few I expect. I don't think that Tesco's realise just how dead Sandbanks is during the winter months and how most of the properties are only occupied for a few weeks a year.

The pub never marketed itself to holiday makers, wasn't family friendly, run to suit a few locals and managed by a joke of a manager. It closed whenever it suited the staff and looked a mess from the outrside.
It needed a proper pub company to run it professionally and take advantage of the fantastic location.
I have an appartment close by so it will save me driving down to Lilliput.
Although I would much prefer a decent pub as the Jazz cafe isn't much better either.
I suspect the owners were offered more money from Tesco.
