JJB Sports stores in Bournemouth close

JJB Sports stores in Bournemouth to close JJB Sports stores in Bournemouth to close

BOTH Bournemouth branches of sportswear giant JJB closed yesterday as the chain went into administration with the loss of 2,200 jobs.

Stores at Turbary Retail Park and The Avenue shut, leaving 30 of the 32 staff redundant.

Sports Direct, the rival firm that belongs to Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, bought 20 stores around the country, saving 550 jobs, but 133 stores closed.

KPMG were appointed administrators and head of restructuring Richard Fleming said: “All staff made redundant have had their arrears of wages and holiday entitlements paid.

“We will be reviewing what options are available for the remainder of the business, such as selling leasehold interests.”

City analysts said JJB, which once had 400 stores, had suffered from the expansion of rivals like JD Sports and Sports Direct, and the ongoing financial crisis.

The former JJB store in Poole’s High Street was converted into a Sports Direct store before the administration.

I am sorry to hear this for the people who have lost their jobs.

On the plus side - does this mean chavs have smartened themselves up and lost the "trackie" look at last?

If you've ever been made redundant, you'll know that horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach, when you're actually told.
Not really a day for 'chav' jokes, I would have thought?
Lets hope those who have lost their jobs can find something new, as soon as possible.....althoug
h, as we know, it's not easy out there at the moment.....

Obviously never been made redundant... lucky old you!..
Or maybe you've just never had a job at all?....in which case, I'm glad some of the tax I pay is able to help you out .... and keeps you cheerful....

Either way, sorry to have spoilt your day a bit, by mentioning something that affects folk in the real world, rather than in your 'happy land'....

Obviously a pair of 'benefits scroungers!!'
My son worked for JJB for several years, and found out this morning he had no job to go to, after weeks of worry....
Hope you are one day in the same position, BUT, as you probably never will WORK for a living, there is little chance of that....
What chance of another job in this recession??? 50+ more looking for work, unlike you...

PS, the REAL chavs buy there gear from 'Sports Direct and JD's as you both well know!!!

Why should I care about the JJB Sports staff when I don't even know them? I've been in a similar situation a few times now, and nobody was crying for me on some local rag's comments section.
The redundant staff need to man up and deal with it. Try RIAS or Castle Cover - they always seem to be recruiting; I would imagine selling life assurance to pensioners is akin to selling tracksuits to chavs.

If you read the comment correctly, you'd have noticed that I have sympathy for the staff who have lost their jobs - in fact that was the first comment I made.

Sorry to disappoint, I am a working person, and hae been for a long time - but who knows when it may happen to any of us? The derogatory comment was to chavs NOT the staff. Why would anyone in their right mind slate people who have just been made redundant ??

You totally missed the point in that I'm hopeful now that chavs will be a thing of the past and they smarten themselves up - nevermind .......

Ahaha. How is a whole group of society going to disappear overnight because a sports shop in Bournemouth has closed? Anyway, won't they just go to Sports Direct next door and buy something even worse?

That photo shows part of the reason why the company has failed.

It looks horrible.

My son gets jeans and jackets from JD and he isn't a chav! He's a student.

Anyway, I hope your son manages to get another job soon.

All this stuff about chavs is just a cheap, predictable and very unfunny shot.

People's livelihoods are at stake, have some compassion.
