Taxi theft: £400 of electrical equipment stolen from driver's car

LOST: Ashley Miller, Chairman of the Bournemouth Station Taxi Association, who has had his taxi broken into outside of his house in Springbourne.
A TAXI driver woke up to find £400 worth of equipment had been stolen from his car.
Thieves broke into Ashley Miller’s Peugeot taxi while it was parked on his driveway during the night and stole a £300 personal digital assistant (PDA) and his £100 sat nav.
“They managed to force the driver’s window down,” Ashley said.
“It must’ve been done very quietly because I’ve got a Staffordshire bull terrier that barks at anything.”
Ashley is chairman of the Bournemouth Station Taxi Association and works from the rank there.
His taxi seats seven passengers and he is an owner-driver who rents out his vehicle.
Another driver had been using the Peugeot Expert EuroCab on Thursday night before the break in outside Ashley’s home in Windham Road in Springbourne.
The PDA device is used to receive information about jobs from taxi firms.
Ashley is paying to have that replaced and is spending £150 on his next sat nav.
He said: “The PDA is worth nothing to anybody else and the SIM card has been cancelled.
“But I’ve got to part with £300 for a new one and I’m waiting to hear about the insurance.
“When I saw the break-in I felt like just selling the taxi and going on the dole like all those that go around stealing things.”
Ashley called for more CCTV cameras to be introduced in Springbourne.
He said: “I’ve lived here for 25 years and it’s gone downhill in the last five years.”
A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed they are investigating the break-in and any witnesses or anyone with information can call 101.

How much have we each been charged between the Airport and the Town when there is a shortage of cabs meeting a busy flight and there's no bus running (early morning or late evening).
I'll post the various sums i have been charged over the last couple of years after I've dug out the receipts.

Can I suggest you prebook a taxi that will meet you as you come off the flight?
If you feel that you have been ripped off that ask for a receipt and take the plate number displayed on the back of the taxi and report to the council.
Don't forget however that it is a higher rate late at night and therefore will cost you more.
Would love to know what you do, so I could make a crass and insensitive generalisation of your occupation and offer no sympathy at all if your property was stolen.
Shame on you.

We operate a set fare which can be booked

You approach a taxi and ask how much to your destination. You are given a price you both know is way over the odds but you agree as the alternative is to hang around for sometimes hours (escpecially when there are richer pickings for the taxis from the drunks in town on a Friday/Saturday night!).
Technically you have agredd a fare but under circumstances close to duress and it could be argued that the law of contract applies here - a verbal agreement has bneen made and as such constitutes a contract in law.
That is what I mean by being ripped off!

Whether you believe me ot not matters little. I know it is true and I suspect most taxi drivers will not be that surprised but then again they are hardly likely to admit it. The insults that are being thrown at me by the taxi driving fraterntity is pretty much proof enough in itself!

There are many of us in this profession that know the importance of good service and we also know that poor service, including overcharging, will discourage further patronage. We do not want or need this! However, only the Council has the authority to take action and they can only take action if you the customer make them aware. So if you've not reported these incidents then I have no sympathy either!

We are not all hurling insults at your posts but are trying to educate your knowledge of the trade and as said before, many of us in our profession are honest and try to serve the public in the RIGHT way.

Next time don't agree a price, just let the driver do it on the meter rate which is set by the council. That way you can complain to them about being ripped off.

How do you get away with parking on the double yellow lines on the Triangle, especially on the bend/corner outside the Taxi office?
For us normal motorists, there is always a camera car or one of the local beat wardens ready to pounce if we even pull up for a second!
Plus, surely as "professional" drivers, you must appreciate that parking there is dangerous as it is a narrow road & your vehicles can often obscure the view of what is ahead in the road & around the corner. Especially with the junction that leads out from the car park opposite the taxi office.
Just thought I'd ask.

Personally I don't stop there myself as I'm not affiliated to that taxi company but I should point out that, according to the highway code, all vehicles are permitted to stop on double yellows to allow passengers to board or alight. However when a driver leaves the car it's then considered parking and no taxi is above the law in this respect.
If you have a genuine concern over the safety of other road users then I would advise bringing it to the attention of the Council's Parking Enforcement Office.

To be honest, I was unaware of the ruling allowing passengers to board or alight. I was caught by the little camera car on a double yellow at the Triangle whilst my Mrs was getting out of the car & they hit me for a £40 fine. I had just pulled up, my engine running with me sat in the seat & she hadn't even shut the door!
With regards to it being after 9pm, I can understand this but I would point out that they park on these double yellow lines at all times during the day and the vehicles are definitely left unattended.
The mind boggles.
