New safety scheme set up in memory of Emily Longley

VICTIM: Emily Longley VICTIM: Emily Longley

A NEW safety scheme for young people has been launched in memory of Bournemouth murder victim Emily Longley.

Aspiring model Emily, 17, was strangled by her boyfriend Elliot Turner at his home in Queen’s Park in May 2011.

The teenager was studying at Brockenhurst College at the time and on Monday a week-long scheme called All-Ways Safe will begin to teach students how to stay safe in a variety of situations in a bid to prevent a repeat of what happened to Emily.

Turner, 21, was found guilty of killing Emily and handed a life sentence.

He was told he would have to serve a minimum of 16 years before he would be considered for parole.

Turner strangled Emily in a jealous rage in his bedroom after discovering she had been texting other boys.

During the court case it emerged that Turner had repeatedly threatened to kill Emily and been physically violent towards her before the attack.

The college’s new campaign will cover a variety of topics including personal safety, relationship safety, road safety and cyber safety.

Students will be visited by police, victim support, firefighters and other agencies to spread the message ‘Be safe, not sorry’.

College principal Di Roberts said: “We have a duty to our students to ensure that they remain safe not only on our campus but in the wider world.

“Our All-Ways Safe week gives us the opportunity to ensure that they are aware of a range of safety issues that might affect them and to encourage them to take necessary steps to safeguard themselves and others.”

Turner’s parents, Leigh and Anita, were also jailed for trying to cover up their son’s crime.

What shocked me about the case was that a lot of the photos were from clubs/ pubs and at 17 she should not have been anywhere near a club/pub. Hopefully somebody will look in to the security staff at these pubs/clubs for allowing and underage girl in?

I know a lot of teenagers do get fake ID but surely a simple change in the ID they can use could maybe have stopped this lovely girl from her sad end?

Absolutely right, wimborne lady... the clubs and pubs which were named during the trial should be made to answer for their lack of diligence in checking the ages of their customers- or are they only interested in the bar takings?

Have Turner's "friends" come to their senses yet, do you think? Everyone knows who they are. They must have known what he was like. Let's hope every day is hell for him in prison.

I hope that part of this education programme will focus on the way men behave, too. If your son, brother or friend is disrespectful to women then they need educating and we all share responsibility for that.

I don't think it would have made any difference - how would it have stopped him?

And in any case, there are family pubs and restaurants which even allow young children in so your comment about being "anywhere near" one and "allowing an underage girl in" isn't valid. I would also point out that at 17, anyone is allowed to drink wine or beer with a meal if they are with an adult and an adult buys them the drinks. Many of the pictures were taken at Cafe Shore whose main business is clearly to serve food. Children are often present there with their parents or relatives.

I'm not saying it would have stopped it but we all know that drinking fuels jealousy and this man killed her in a jealous rage.

A few of the witness statements were from when he had been drinking in clubs in Bournemouth.

I do use clubs and pubs and am sometimes shocked (yes i am old!) at how obviously underage people get in.

Get over yourselves. Pair of morons. I like every other normal person was trying to get into clubs from the age of 15yrs over 20 years ago. .
.
Nearly every teenager without social problems does it yet when one person kills someone it's underage drinking and the clubs faults. Maybe he was just a bad guy.
.
His mates maybe a bunch of spoilt idiots but they haven't killed anyone.
