Bridport rail enthusiasts on right track with 25th anniversary
5:00pm Tuesday 7th August 2012 in Latest
MODEL railway enthusiasts celebrated a quarter of a century of their hobby at the 25th anniversary of the Bridport and District Model Railway Club with an exhibition in the United Church Hall.
The exhibits on show came from places such as Petersfield, Burnham on Sea, Barnstaple, Ringwood, Weymouth and Poole, together with a selection from individual club members and others from the local area.
Alongside exhibits including trams and other novelties there were layouts with British and Continental themes in all popular gauges from ‘N’ gauge, 2mm to one foot, up to ‘0’ gauge, which is 7mm to one foot.
Visitors were also able to view stands demonstrating different facets of the hobby including locomotive building, repair and weathering, which adds that touch of realism to the models.
There was a special display about the Royal train by Douglas Beazer.
The public was encouraged to take part in a vote for the best exhibit in the show to win the trophy and a ‘00’ gauge locomotive generously donated by Buffers Model Railways of Axminster.
This was won by the layout called Rax Lane MPD by Ron Randall from Bridport, who exhibited a display of a mixed steam and diesel motive power depot with DCC control including sound effects.
The exhibition was visited by Bridport’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Geoff Ackerman who toured all the exhibits and commented on the very high standard on show.
Light refreshments were provided throughout the day by the ‘railway ladies’ who are wives and partners of club members.
Club exhibition manager Bob Ahrens, who was celebrating his 25th exhibition, said that there was something for everyone.
Club publicity officer Douglas Beazer thanked everyone for their efforts and commented on the public’s remarks on how good and friendly the exhibition was.
The club wishes to thank everyone who made the show successful and in particular Buffers Model Railways of Axminster.
