Roumelia Lane shooting: ‘Our campaign is working’ say police
9:00am Saturday 28th July 2012 in Latest By Stephen Bailey
THE police and council have stressed the work they are doing around Boscombe in the wake of the gangland murder.
Operation Crackdown, the local branch of the county-wide drugs operation, has led to 65 arrests and 11 offenders charged since it was set up a year ago.
Officers have also carried out 56 drugs raids.
Chief Inspector Chris Weeks could not comment on the murder case or the action police may be taking in response.
But he said: “In my opinion, the figures alone evidence the fact that we do listen to what our communities tell us and we will always take positive action where there is sufficient evidence.”
He also pointed to a kerb-crawling strategy that has led to 63 arrests – and a dispersal order to deal with drunks in the precinct.
The area, and Boscombe generally, has seen several major crimes and police also said they are working with the council to improve the area.
Cllr Jane Kelly, Bournemouth council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said the council could do little about gangs coming down from London.
But she said it was working on accommodation, new housing and clamping down on anti-social behaviour. Roumelia Lane has become home to independent shops, cafes and artists since the council paid for a revamp in 2010 and 2011.
Helene Bowman-Brown, chair of the Friends of Roumelia Lane, said: “When people come here, it doesn’t take them long to realise there’s a lot of nice people and a real community.”
Resident and mum Shenagh Coombes, 19, lives in a gated set of Dave Wells flats in the flat.
She said: “It’s very quiet here around here and everyone knows each other. I think our place especially is safe for children.”

This is hard core and i think Cllr Kelly, should go back to what she is best at and that is putting up hanging baskets.
It would never surprise me that the person who pulled the trigger could of been as young as 14 as these gangs are influence by the LA south Central code.Operating with a shot caller and new members will seek credibility in commiting crimes such as murder to gain more respect in the gang as well as drugs.
They are highly sophisticated and i would not be surprised that the offender did not even return to the area where the suspect gang operates.
I think Dorset Police have inherited a gang situation that only cities like Manchester,Liverpool and London have got and will have to rely on their expertise.

Perhaps the Cllr Jane Kelly could tell us why there are a considerably large number of Class A drug addicts in Boscombe. Could it be that it is more profitable for landlords to house Class A drug addicts as the council will pay the highest rent possible irrespective of condition of the property ?
Perrhaps, in that light, Cllr Jane Kelly could explain why the council continues to pay for slum housing. Could it be that too many snouts don't want that particular trough overturned ?
The disturbing events in Roumelia Lane demonstrate how badly wrong the council have got this. Trumpted as the answer, it has seen two murders and even our local MP getting attacked. As long as the place is swamped with Class A drug addicts you will continue to get these problems, irrespective of how many futile gestures to pretty up the place.
You don't make the hen house safe by hanging flower baskets outside - you remove the fox.

Whilst the Council like to portray Bournemouth as a middle class, genteel seaside town this image couldn’t be further from the truth. Organised crime extends well beyond Boscombe as the headline in todays Echo clearly demonstrates “Shut Down... Club closed after police claims of links to organised crime”.

Boscombe is attracting criminals from far and wide to set up shop, how is that a working campaign?
It's working! We have people being shot in the face instead of stabbed = progress!!

My son whilst working in Boscombe for a short while took to lunching in a particular establishment. Every day at circa 12.30 a local drug dealer took up residence in a telephone kiosk opposite dealt drugs to a string of customers for 45 minutes or so then went on his way. If the police cannot control this they have NO chance against Somali gangs.
It seems to me that your son is part of the problem!

Yes there is.Intercept them and turn them back.If intel and interception is available for travellers movements, then there is no reason the same cannot apply to known gangs.
Helene Bowman-Brown, chair of the Friends of Roumelia Lane, said: “When people come here, it doesn’t take them long to realise there’s a lot of nice people and a real community.”
Drug gangs and the like could not care less.
